Dear Drew,

Thanks for your tribute to Ernie Garza, which I am sharing on the
TexasCavers list. You can see a longer biography of Ernie at

I traveled with Ernie to the Texas Caver Reunion in 2018, and we had good
discussions about caves, people, and books. I will not forget him either.

Ernie's Last Wishes were to be buried at sea. Since we couldnt find anyone to
do that, he opted for cremation. That has been set in motion and I'll be able
to pick up his ashes in a couple weeks. He never specifically talked about a
memorial, but we all know how much he loved a party. and music. I think it
would be nice to celebrate his life at TCR where many of his friends can gather
and tell Ernie stories. I do not plan to organize anything more. If someone
else would like to, they are welcome. If anyone would like to scatter some of
his ashes in his many favorite places in the world, we can arrange that as well.

I'm sorry to report that Ernie Garza has drawn his last breaths. It's
official as of 4:30am. He went peacefully in the end. It was my great honor to

Re: [Texascavers] Ernie Garza story

2019-03-12 Thread mminton
Bill's story about Ernie Garza reminded me of a similar story concerning
Australian Rolf Adams (RIP). We were on a trip to Mexico in my school
bus with a bunch of other Texas cavers. Rolf had inexplicably lost his
passport, but he was blond and super Anglo-looking. The only problem was
his Australian accent. If he said much of anything, his accent would
have given him away. So as we approached the border we spent quite a
while coaching him so that when the border guard asked, "All US
citizens?", he would respond only, "Yep". We got his response to sound
nearly perfect Texan, and indeed, when the time came it passed muster.
We sailed through and they were never the wiser.

There are countless stories about Mexico caving stalwart Ernie Garza. In 2015
he joined us in Huautla during our PESH expedition and rode back to the USA
with me. He was worried about entering the USA because he couldn’t find his
passport. I shot this short video along the way, when we stopped for lunch just
north of Mexico City. In it Ernie is asked what his plan is for crossing the

Ernie entered hospice last night. His nurse will be Billy Goerdt and he will
come weekly to check in. Hospice will take over all medical care so I am
cancelling further VA visits. They will send aides 2-3 times a week to take
care of physical therapy and hygiene. I am still managing a daily breakfast
and supper shift so he will have lots of eyes on him. Hospice is delivering a
hospital bed today which will make it far easier for E to get up and down. He
has been getting steadily more mobil after his most recent fall on the 8th and
was using his walker to get around yesterday. He is lucid and loves visits and
phone calls.
This feels like a huge relief for both of us. Decisions have been made and the
extra help is very much appreciated.
Please share this with any of Ernie’s friends that you know. He was part of
many circles throughout the world and I only know a few of them.

I would also recommend that you steal some fresh veggies from the Gluesen's
camp and fix dinner for Ernie. I did that and it worked out great, otherwise he
will continue to subsist on beanieweenies.

Ps: A shoutout to Texascavers: Has anyone spent any time in Peru? Ann and I are
going there for seven weeks and would appreciate any leads. I plan to visit
some karst in the jungle east of the Andes, but also want to spend quality time
where it is cool and dry. Terry would send me to a salt pan in the high desert
but I would prefer more conventionally beautiful sights, preferably those with
at least some vegetation.

Anyone know anything about Reserva Paisajística Nor Yauyos-Cochas? It is
beautiful high altitude karst containing the world's highest known surveyed
cave. I like getting high, but not that high!

Re: [Texascavers] Ernie

2018-05-24 Thread David
Ernie is a great guy.He has offered to let me camp on his property
numerous times.He even let
me stay for free in his camper. How many cavers would do that ?
Especially those that know me ( LOL ! ).

Ernie has a real toilet inside of his house. Not one of those kind of
toilets that you have that flushes and sends the waste into our rivers and
streams. His compost the excrement.I have no idea how it works.

He also has an interesting cave near his property.Anybody been in that
lately ? That was the last cave that I ever
went in ( I think ) about 4 or 5 years ago.

There are other fun things to do near his house. There is a caver with
an underground swimming pool.
And the new TSC is not far away. There is also a really cool bed &
breakfast inn, and maybe a saloon.

And a few cavers live around there.

If I won the lottery, I would move out there somewhere.
