They are back now. indeed it probably needed some time to settle down.
I'd also vote for keeping the editing around, since I like keeping
notifications in my email for convenience, but I end up always checking the
replies in the web version anyway.

I agree with Mat, editing is really useful. Especially adding results that
emerged in the discussion to the OP.
