Re: [time-nuts] Need recommendation for GPS antenna for Oncore GPS module

Hi

Appears to be an Italian clone of the generic timing antenna. That is only a
guess and it could
easily be something very different …. Since it’s a part made for Erickson by
somebody else,
you would need their part number to properly track it down. If it’s a custom
part, even that might
be impossible.

For what it is worth, I got a used HP/Symmetricom 58532a antenna off of eBay
for about $50. It needed a minor repair (broken internal coax) but once that
was done it has worked great for me. The other one I considered was the 58504a
but they were more expensive on the used market and didn't seem as weather
proof (a special weather proof cap was offered as an add-on but most don't have
it) so I went with the newer 58532a.

[time-nuts] Racal SA510 1MHz frequency standard

2018-11-04 Thread tom burkart

Hi all,
just wondering whether there is any information available on the
following OCXO:

1 Mc/s frequency standard
Type No SA510
Racal Electronics Ltd
Bracknell Berkshire
Made in England

All the information I have is on the second label:

Pin connection
1 common -ve
2 varactor supply
3 H.T. +ve
4 O.P. shield
5 O.P.
6 18V reg
7 varactor -ve
8 varactor +ve

I am surmising that the heater is around 24V, but rather than
guessing, I am asking here as google has come up empty (probably wrong
search term?)

Kind regards,

Tom Burkart

Nice to have but I don't need 40 outputs.

Three was a discussion about the particular video amplifier here some years
back, as they were on eBay and someone on this list made us aware of it.

Part of the discussion was converting to 50 ohms, but someone pointed out
it was pushing the limits of the op-amp.

But I don't like the form factor of the unit either.

I have for some time looking for another distribution amplifier, but I was
offered this at £150 including delivery. I think I will take it.

Re: [time-nuts] Racal Dana 9478 frequency distribution system with option 04B high stability oven (5x10^-10/day aging rate).

2018-11-04 Thread Bob kb8tq
Hi

One would *guess* that the PLL bandwidth in the 9578 is wider than what you see
in a typical
GPSDO. As long as they don’t both line up at the same point, noise and phase
peaking should
not be a big deal. Depending on how clean your GPSDO is, the 9578 might clean
things up a bit.

For timing / high precision, putting another PLL into things is going to add
some delay and possibly
some temperature dependence. Since you are running normal test gear, neither of
those issues
should be significant enough to impact anything. In this environment 75 ohms
vs 50 ohms is also
not a big deal, but it will have slightly more impact, fix it if you can, don’t
sweat it if you can’t.

For timing use ideally it should be above the roofline by at least several feet
otherwise satellites close to the horizon will be not be visible.

The generally preferred antenna is the Agilent/Keysight/Symmetricom. 58504A
antenna also any outdoor antenna made by Trimble or TrueTime as long as antenna
does not use a downconverter.

2018-11-04 Thread Scott McGrath
Racal overall has a reputation for making very high quality instruments,
Since the OCXO is an option, and the price is right on the DA, I’d
probably buy it.

Also thinking since its an option the OCXO can probably be switched out of
circuit or removed entirely.

Im guessing Racal thought that adding an OCXO would be a feature for shops that
did not have a frequency standard and/or one that used a different frequency
than ‘standard’ like a TV station. So everything would be phase locked to a
master clock irrespective of frequency.
