[Tn5250j-general] Issues with install on 7 and 8.x

2014-09-28 Thread Michael D. Setzer II
In the past had seen issues were the install tries to install in Program
Files(s)
directory, and it fails. Then tried to install in C:\tn5250j, and it fails to
create,
but one can open a DOS prompt, and md\tn5250j and then it will create with
the message that directory already exists, but goes thru.

The other night had a student with a Windows 8 notebook, and it had the
same issues. Got it installed, but then found that the (+) field exit key kept
popping up some windows thing. Also, various F-keys were also bring up
windows 8 things?? I'm using Linux on my machines, and my classroom is
dual Fedora 20 and Windows 7 that doesn't seem to have this issues.

Ended up setting field exit to use Ctrl-X and then using the keypad for
function keys.

Anyone else figured out options for running on installing and running on
Windows 7 and above.

 Hi,
In the past had seen issues were the install tries to install in
 Program Files(s)
directory, and it fails. Then tried to install in C:\tn5250j, and
it fails to create, but one can open a DOS prompt, and md\tn5250j
and then it will create with the message that directory already
  exists, but goes thru.

Since Windows Vista, Microsoft enabled User Access Control (UAC)
feature by default. UAC requires administrative rights, when
 installing in folder Program Files.
The easiest way to run the installer.jar as administrator is via
command shell. See Microsoft documentation for details:
 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc947813(v=WS.10).aspx
 Within this admin-console type:
 java -jar tn5250j-0.7.4-installer.jar

Question is that the user id that was logged in was administrator type
account. Also, why it didn't prompt that the action required the prompt for the
permissions like many programs do.

Also, don't know why it wouldn't let the installer create the C:\tn5250j
directory, but opening a regular (non-administrator) would allow for creating
the same directory, and then the installer would continue with the message
that the directory already existed.

Again, that isn't the big issue, since it can be gotten around, but would be
nice if you could just download and run the installer in one step as worked in
XP and before. The issue is with the new keys being mapped with windows
8. Didn't see the issue with Linux, Windows pre 8, and Macs.

Seeing more students with systems with 8.x, and this is the second one that I
have seen with the same issues.

I don't have a W8 machine or access too. Just got new machines in January
replacing the previous 7 year old machines we had. They came with 7, since
the MIS was not prepared to even think of supporting 8. I added Fedora 20,
and use it as the default OS.

 Best regards
 Martin
