The fundamental questions seem to be: What is the purpose of a DX QSO? What
does a DX contact signify? In my book, three things:(1) The ability to assemble
a station capable of making the contact;(2) An understanding of propagation
sufficient to identify and exploit the path; and(3) Sufficient
I have done it both ways; no big deal. One thing you should consider, however,
is the strands -- once split -- get much more tangly and difficult to handle
thanks to the steel wire.Good luck!Mark -- WA9ETWSent from my U.S. CellularĀ®

If you have been following this thread, you have learned:(1) ECM blower motors
are beginning to dominate the market. The issue isn't going away, and will
likely become more prominent as older furnaces start needing replacement.(2)
ECM motors either will or will not create an RFI problem.(3) At
We are in the market for a new high-efficiency furnace, and I note that many
(if not most) of the current models use variable-speed DC blower motors.Ā I am
concerned about the potential for RFI from the speed controllers, and wonder if

Because there seems to be a lot going on with sprites (and associated
phenomena) about 100 km up, I think there's a very good chance of a close
tie with sporadic E (Es) propagation. This notion seems supported by
oservations connecting ionized Es cloud formation to clusters and lines

*A sidebar and table in the ARRL Handbook (22.23 in the 2007 edition)
suggests that, for 16 on- or in-ground radials, there is little benefit to
cutting them longer than 0.1 wave. Only when the number of radials goes
up, they say, do you start to realize improvements from longer lengths. *

Carl,
QRP may be fun for the QRP station but it's often a PITA for the station
on the other end.
I hear that Steve, KD1JV, (well known for his remarkable ATS and PFR
transceiver kits) MIGHT be convinced to kit the new DDS-based 160m QRP
transceiver he recently prototyped and used with good results in last
week's contests. With the exception of the DDS circuitry, such a kit would
