Topband: High solar activity
High solar activity not only affects 160 meter propagation, but Sam Beverage, a relative of Harold Beverage, has noted a polar freezing connection. 73 Bruce-K1FZ On another subject, this one Sun-Spot Cycle related, is the plight of the Russian Cruise ship stuck in the Antarctic ice, where they expected open water to be. As I see it the problem is the same as in the previous Cycle when another Russian Cruise ship was sunk while trying to enter the Weddell Sea. Both happening at a time of high Solar Activity. ie colder temperatures. The failed Shackleton Expedition also happened at a time of high Solar activity. The previous years of these three happenings those areas were mostly open! There are similar comparisons with Arctic expeditions. Conditions are not the same from year to year! Topband: Stew Perry
Had fun with this one. Didn't break (or come near to breaking) any top of the pile awards but the band conditions were decent from CT. I could work most everyone I heard but hearing faint signals is always my problem so nothing new. Grayline was good to me as likely for everyone else. Only one really far off contact but it definitely added points. Couldn't hear any JAs but I was SP for the most part took a run for a few hours which helped. I know there were a couple I heard in there calling me but my best effort couldn't pull a call out so had to keep on going. Frustrating, they wanted the Q and maybe it was even an ATNO for me but such is the game. Thanks to all who participated especially to those putting on the contest those donors helping with the many awards. Gary KA1J --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! But i guess the word did not spread fast enough. I sure was missing all the clear channel stations from the coast. VE6SV had a blasting signal here way into daylight. My guess is, that with the high solar activity the days with west coast propagation have been few from central EU and the interest faded. And a personal note. You were the first EU I worked on 160 when I moved to CA in 2006, but I still don't have a response from the card I sent you via the Bureau. The last thing I'm going to do is respond to your CQ. Thankfully other DL stations were more courteous. 73, Jim K9YC Also as a personal note. If I am interested in receiving a QSL from a DX station, whether for a new country or for an Award. I do not QSL via the Bureau. I send the card direct! I found that Wolf was very good at QSLing. 73 de Price W0RI and trustee of W0CKC _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
