Topband: 160 M FCP Alternatives - Comments Invited

2012-08-17 Thread Rick ve3mm
Thanks to all who replied to my request for comments. All of the feedback
is useful.

I am now planning a FCP installation mounted on the fence, offset with PVC
standoffs made from dimensioned PVC lumber. One leg ( 2 conductor side )
will bent 90 degrees, 20 feet out from centre. The other leg ( 3 conductor
) will be straight.

Negotiations with the XYL are complete and I am now progressing into the
construction phase of the antenna this weekend.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

At a prior QTH in the 80's I used 3/4 PVC pipe and T's to support a length
of 3/4 CATV hardline as the shunt feed. A single piece of #12 didnt work
well at all at any spacing using bandwidth and pileup busting as the
criteria.

I find that 1/2 inch PVC pipe is handy for many things. It can be cut into
6
spacers or insulators. I use it for spacers on my Shunt Fed tower's

shunt feed rod. I used 1/2 EMT for the shunt feed rod and the PVC spaced
about
every 24 to stabilize the rod. I use Black Tie-wraps to

secure everything.

I have found that 20 foot lengths of 1/2 inch PVC pipe works very well in
getting radial wires through, around and under the very prickly shrubbery
that
gets in the way here in the New Mexico desert. It is very inexpensive and
can
be extended to as long a run as is needed.

ZR and HAROLD, I have been having issues with the tie wraps breaking in the AZ

but I can't use those for shunt feeding, of course. Can you recommend a source
for ones that don't break? It is a real pain replacing them every year or

2012-08-17 Thread Michael Armstrong
ZR, Bruce and Bob, thanks for your info. There's the problem. I was
using the white ones and didn't know the black ones are UV resistant.
I'll check those out.

ZR, I need to use tie wraps in my case. I am not, currently, using PVC
so I need something that will not make electrical contact which hose
clamps would in my case. But that is a good point you make about that
thing. If I change my design, which is indeed likely, I will definitely
think about using your idea along with PVC.

In general, I have avoided using PVC for anything RF.. those tests
years ago where the PVC pipes melted and the resulting pictures kind of
left a lasting impression that is hard to fight. LOL. I'll get over
it, but if you saw the same pictures those many years ago, you would
definitely understand why I have avoided it to date :)

 I'll check those out.

I learned a lesson a long time ago here, after I used big black tie-wraps on
all my cables on towers. I have white ties and ropes that are still good
after 14 years, and black that fell apart after a few years.

While black color generally slows degradation down, black does not mean UV
stabilized or even UV resistant. :-)

If you want UV resistant, buy something that is UV resistance material or
has UV inhibitors, no matter what color.

The address shown is too short.  Add VQ2DAA at the end of the address.

Topband: Ty-Wraps

2012-08-17 Thread Edwin Karl
I have some wide vinyl tape that I use to put 2 layers over the ty-wrap,
keeps the sun off.
Worked OK in a pinch (For now)

Best substance is stainless strap with a small fitting (Wraplock), lasts
forever.
Even a slick ratchet tightening device in the can, mercy what will they
think of next.

Did you mean black TB Ty-Raps from Home Depot?

I know the Home Depot ones are not. They start to break after a couple

I've found that black Thomas Betts Ty-Raps are UV resistant, at least
in the Ohio sun. I think the TB p/n was TY-525-M.
