Is this correct?:

Baker Island time is UTC-12, so at local sunset on June 27, it is
already June 28, UTC. On the USA west coast, it is very late
on June 27. Are the dates on the web site in terms of Baker Island
local time/date?

BTW, are you sure you have to wait until sunset?

Topband: Baker Island DXpedition on 160

2018-06-12 Thread GEORGE WALLNER

Hello TopBanders,
KH1/KH7Z will be active on 160 from Baker Island from June 27 to July 6
(note that dates are tentative and may change -- please visit
http://baker2018.net/ for updates). Given the time of the year, KH1 is
likely to be challenging for most. In addition to the less then perfect time
of the year, we are limited to a maximum antenna height of 43 feet. But, we
do have a new antenna for 160 meters we will stand it in the salt-water to
maximize its performance. We will also have a couple of DHDL receiving
antennas with high performance pre-amplifiers. In other words, we will do
our absolute best to overcome the handicaps that we were dealt.
Our TX frequency will be 1822.5 to being with and we will be listening up.
NA stations should call above 1825.0 to avoid the stronger JA callers, who
are limited to below 1825.0
Our sunset will be at 07:45 UTC. We will be on the band at sunset to fully
take advantage of the 1 1/2 hours of common darkness with the NA East Coast.
During that time the sun will be still up in Japan, so we will be able to
focus on NA and SA. West coast stations will have more than 4 hours of
common darkness with us, they should have a decent chance of putting KH1 in
the log. After the West Coast sunrise, from about 12:45 UTC onward, JA, UA0
and SE Asia, as well as ZL/VK, will have an exclusive shot at us. During
this time we may move down to give the JA-s more room.
EU will be,,,well ...difficult. We will stay on the air throughout each
sunrise, working as far west as possible.

GL and CU,
George,
AA7JV

PS: Donations are the life-blood of DXpeditions and this one is no
exception.

Topband: Summer Stew Perry Topband Challenge - this weekend

2018-06-12 Thread Tree
A final reminder that the summer Stew Perry contest is happening this
weekend. After being silent in March, I am hoping to get K7RAT back on the
air in time to hand out some QSOs. Will likely be a tree supported wire of
some kind at the new QTH.

Rules and previous results are here:

http://www.kkn.net/stew

Remember the brand new Stew Perry Quatre Seasons Award!!

This special award - which will likely consist of a plaque - will be
presented to the single-op participant who accumulates the highest total of
points over the four events for a given year.

This is the second event for 2018 - so you can add to your score from March.
Your points will be counted regardless of which power category you enter.
Note that the low power entry has a 1.5X multiplier and the QRP one has a
3X multiplier. You figure out which category will help your overall total
at the end of the year.

Re: Topband: cutting coax stubs for 80 meter 4-square

2018-06-12 Thread Wes Stewart
Maybe my "Zoom" model is different from yours but I opened up my AA-55 Zoom and
found the connector to be rather securely mounted.  So much so that I
reconsidered my idea of replacing the SO239 with a type N.  Not that it isn't
doable, just that it was more trouble than I wanted to bother with at the time.

weak mechanical mounting, relying on solder.  I think I will
revise my advice:

1.  Always use a DC block
2.  Carefully attach a short flexible coax jumper and leave
in place.  Calibrate it out.  Then connect the DUT to the
end of the jumper.  No mechanical stress on the UHF.
