7Q7RU was audible from well before sunset here in Virginia until sunrise in
Malawi. Lots of QSB, but copyable on a 700 foot beverage running E/W.

Topband: Digital farewell ceremony John ON4UN - Saturday 21 November

2020-11-19 Thread ON4WW_pandora
Pse find herewith a communication from John's daughter Marleen, in regard to
the previously announced digital farewell ceremony.

Kindly forward this mail to friends of John who might not be subscribed to
reflectors nor news bulletins, thank you.

For those of you who wish to be present but are not able to attend at 14:00
UTC, the digital ceremony link will be accessible a couple more days
afterward.

Mark - on4ww.

Dear amateur radio friends

I have been overwhelmed by the many heart-warming messages received from so
many of you after my father's passing.

I am very grateful for all the stories and memories that were shared.

Let me thank you by inviting you to his farewell ceremony - this Saturday
November 21 at 14:00 UTC.

You can join the ceremony (or view it in the next days) via this link:

Warmest regards

My great friend and ham radio mentor John ON4UN has passed away.

Please find below a mail from his daughter Marleen, addressed to the ham
community.

Kindly forward this mail to friends of John who might not be subscribed to
reflectors nor news bulletins, thank you.

Mark - on4ww.

ps: as reflectors cannot receive attachments nor photos. a link is available
for Marleen's mail with extra photo at http://www.on4ww.be/ON4UN_SK.pdf

Dear amateur radio friends

It is with sadness, but also gratitude and pride, I have to let you know my
father John ON4UN, has become silent key.

John's health has steadily deteriorated throughout the year, but in the last
few weeks he was home with us where he peacefully passed away yesterday
November 9.

Ham Radio, and especially Low Band DX-ing, were my father's lifelong passion
and always had a strong presence in our house. Sometimes literally, when
many of you paid us a visit or a group of DX'ers came over for a weekend of
contesting. At other times in the background, when my dad was working on a
project or experimenting with new equipment or antennas.

Though I don't have a call-sign, I very much feel part of the big radio
family and always will. I am very proud of everything my father has
accomplished together with you, and I am grateful to the many of you who
have given him so much joy over the years. We will miss him dearly, but we
take comfort looking back on the beautiful life he lived as a member of the
wonderful Ham Radio community.

We are planning a digital farewell ceremony on Saturday Nov 21st and will
keep you updated on practicalities.

If you would like to send us a message please mail to on4un...@gmail.com -
John's old e-mail account is not in use anymore.

In the meantime, you can pay him a visit at QRZ.com where he always kept his
resume up to date.

Marleen Devoldere

Hope to work you..

Once again, lots of stations on the band last night from both sides of
the

pond . . . good have such a nice turnout.

However, quite deep QSB on most signals, and propagation didn't seem as
good
as the night before (when I worked several stations right across to the
West

Thanks once again to all that made the effort to come on 160 to have a
few

QSOs . . . let's hope we can keep the DX CW activity going again next

Observation from my little gun station in eastern PA is that propagation seems
to have moved more to the west of me, western PA, Ohio and further. Whereas for
the last two weeks or so I was hearing EU fairly well given my S5 noise level
which is quite for me.
Worked the KP2 and YL stations last night but as Roger alludes to some deep QSB
made it a couple try QSO.
That 7Q7 was drawing a lot of activity bit I could not hear him at all. Seemed
like stations to the west of me were hearing better.

Subject: Topband: Wednesday CW DX Activity Night

Once again, lots of stations on the band last night from both sides of the
pond . . . good have such a nice turnout.

However, quite deep QSB on most signals, and propagation didn't seem as good
as the night before (when I worked several stations right across to the West
Coast).

Thanks once again to all that made the effort to come on 160 to have a few
QSOs . . . let's hope we can keep the DX CW activity going again next
Wednesday.

Topband: Morning openings to EU

2020-11-19 Thread Tree
One of the things I really look forward to during the winter and low
sunspots are the morning openings to EU that we sometimes get here in the
Pacific Northwest. I worked my first two QSOs during the Stew Perry last
month - but it has been quiet since until a few days ago.

I have now worked at least 3 EU each morning for three mornings now. The
opening seems to be best about an hour before sunrise (which is typical).

As we get closer to the dead of winter - perhaps this opening will improve.
