The coil should be whatever inductance you need to resonate your slightly
short antenna . . . then you can use that coil as an auto-transformer to get
a good match, ie once the antenna is resonant, you can feed your coax a few

I've been reading all the technical stuff about Ground Conductivity with

As many of you will be aware, unlike most Topband DXers, I have always used
a Horizontal Half-wave Dipole.

Just to re-state something I posted a few weeks ago . . .
I made a point of checking signal strengths last weekend in the CQ WW.
Once again, there was absolutely NO increase in signals strengths around our
Sunrise (0730Z), and if anything they started to drop off.
This was regardless of how

In my experience, most DX propagation on 160m ISN'T low angle (unlike 80m
when it nearly always IS.)
For the past 45 years, at several different QTHs I've always used a
horizontal co-ax fed halfwave dipole, only 50ft high . . .
Well conditions seemed pretty good last night . . . my RBN reports were
certainly encouraging from several NA stations - one was even 49 dB over the
noise !

But if that's the case, it's even more daft . . . as there's LOTS of people
who complain about the lack of DX activity on CW these days.
Well as others have mentioned, DX conditions have been quite good the last
few nights . . .
But not many NA stations on the band to work !
So that's why I'm still pushing this idea of an Activity Night on Wednesday
evenings, to try at least get everyone on one night a week !

Well a couple of weeks ago it was great . . . lots of North American
stations on the band for a few nights in a row . . . managed about 50 NA
QSOs on cw over a couple of evenings.
But I think that activity was just due to those stations coming on the band
to try and work the various DX-peditions
