I am grateful for the many thoughtful responses, both directly and on the
reflector.
My price point is around the TS-590 and FT-1200 range, otherwise I believe
I would consider the K3. As many have said, thank goodness for choices and
personal preference.
Here's what I have taken
Much of the discussion of todays transceivers is like comparing apples
to apples. My situation did not require a big box status symbol with
over a hundred button features. My requirements were standard
communications interface ala serial, USB or Ethernet control with a

This past winter season I borrowed a friend's K3 and used it and my Kenwood
TS-590S in a SO2R setup in a number of RTTY contests. I found that 99% of
the time the TS-590S heard what the K3 did. It was a pleasant surprise.
Neither rig suffered 2 kHz spacing IMD crud.
I also ran a SO2R RTTY

The one thing that's keeping me from buying a TS590 for use on the topband
is the use of a mechanical relay versus solid state switching between TX

I've owned the FTDX1200, the TS590 and the K3. IKMHO, the 1200 has a better
sounding and more versatile receiver than the 590. The DSP and DNR is
definitely superior and the roofing filters provide a few more options when
trying to dig out a weak station adjacent to a strong signal.
