Currently on the phone, apps stop rendering when shell hides them,
because shell also lifecycle stops the app. App isn't actually told it
should stop rendering, we just SIGSTOP its process.
But some apps are not lifecycle stopped, e.g. music. So we should have
unity8 tell
I have now also noticed another thing: Is the email address there even
correct? Because I'm wondering why they would use the substring l10
instead of l10n.

This does suggest unity8-dash is starting but either
1. there is no mir server, such as unity8, running
2. MIR_SOCKET is not set to the correct mir server socket
3. the permissions on the socket file mean dash cannot connect
We rely on upstart to ensure Dash starts when unity8 claims to be ready
I've given up on it for now.. it requires substancial changes and is a
quasi-design flaw with dbus.
I am curious (- I haven't checked) what happens with the switch to
sdbus/kdbus.

Checking the versions/arch of libgtk-3-dev:
- On amd64, both 3.16.4-2ubuntu1 and 3.16.5-1ubuntu1 have a dependency on
libmirclient-dev
- On ppc64el, neither version has a dependency on libmirclient-dev
Nevertheless, packagekit builds fine against 3.16.4-2ubuntu1 but fails

gio is doing one of those glib things of aborting the process just
because.
Now the interesting question is who is using gio/gdbus because unity8
code itself isn't so it must be some plugin we use.
