How can I simply disable phased packages? (I was hit numerous times by
outdated packages, never had problem with update causing problems so for
me this just makes things worse anyway)

I have had the same problem since 20.04. Now on 22.04. for me it is
solved by using deny-interfaces in the avahi-daemon.conf file. I just
eliminate the interfaces that are adding the printers I don't need.
Here I have denied my wifi usb dongle and my ZeroTier network
connection.

I've been asked to prepare a summary of the current status of this bug:
- there's a grub2 security update that's been published and then pulled:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2-unsigned/2.06-2ubuntu10/+publishinghistory
thanks, I set the pre-release items on the software updater, and triggered
an update. But I saw nothing about gdb in the things it was going to
update.
Without me telling it to update all packages in the "Updates" menu of
software and updates, how do I make it update the gdb?
Thanks

Ah, you might want to do systemd first, if a reboot isn't desirable.
If a reboot is fine, then maybe also just check again after reboot,
in case it's a transient system condition unrelated to the upgrades.

Now, it fails silently, and running it with "-d" gives me:
Missing privilege separation directory: /run/sshd
This directory is normally created with "RuntimeDirectory=sshd" as

I see the problem in openssh-server.postinst. When only a non-default
Port is used (and ListenAddress is left alone), the temporary
addresses.conf.new file is never moved to it's final location. So, when
the ListenStream= line is appended to the final file, the
'[Socket] ...' portion is not there.
This drop-in is generated by openssh-server.postinst, and systemd is
correctly rejecting the drop-in without a [Socket] section.
