msp3k - I got the same thing but just ran unity --replace in a terminal window I had left open on the desktop. I didn't check to see if could open a terminal. But running unity --replace from the desktop (w/o dash, launcher, panel, menu bar, etc.) resulted in getting them all back. It was ugly -

I have a workaround for this, use Gnome instead of Unity. It took me a while to realize/figure out that it's pretty painless to just run a different window manager on Ubuntu. I did look at maybe switching to a different lock screen but there was no straightforward way to do that. It turns out

I have the same Problem and I found a similar Bug #1044251 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1044251) solved in 2012 For me, enabling the 'Manual Login'' and replacing unity works so far. This is just an (ugly) workaround (Loginpromt changes), but some parts of the old fix might be applied here
