Sorry Michael, I understand this makes your experience with webbrowser-
app frustrating, but I’m not really sure where to start investigating
this issue (I can’t observe it in my up-to-date xenial VM). Maybe look
at what pulseaudio reports when trying to play sound in an oxide
webview?

Well it's usable. But unusable as your main browser, in the sense that
I need a second browser everytime I want to watch a youtube video or
similar.

Poke on this. It's really annoying for everyday use. Basically makes
webbrowser-app unusable on desktop xenial.

Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. I haven’t made the switch to
xenial on my desktop machine yet, so I can’t really investigate further
for now.
Could you check with a simple QML WebView if sound plays? You can save
the following example as a qml file, and open it with qmlscene:

This is still happening to me. It's getting annoying to switch to other
browsers just for the occasional video.
If I play a youtube video, when I look in the Applications tab of the
Sound panel in System Settings, it doesn't even show up in the list of
applications that are playing sound. So it
