So looks like on my laptop the terminal looks fine, but on my desktop
(2560x1400) the monospace font size 8 & 9 are equally wide, and 8 is
what I use so the end result is ugly. 7 is way too small. Laptop
(3200x1800) uses size 9, and changing to size 8 the width changes too.

Well, there was definitely a bug in the thumbnailer that relates to
relative pathnames, and I just picked up on the error message you
copied.
If there is a virtual filesystem somewhere, the thumbnailer has no idea
that it exists. In a nutshell, the thumbnailer can produce a thumbnailer
for a path
I mean the "official" driver downloaded from support.amd.com failed to
build. Slow rendering appears after "apt install fglrx" and reboot.
Installing prebuilt fglrx binaries seems to success. So I think the bug
is related to fglrx.

I don't think this has to do with relative path names. The way .qrc
files work is that the image files are compiled into the application
binary and it sets up a virtual file system inside the binary that
contains stuff from the resource file. The path "qrc:///image.png" is
actually an absolute one.

I copied the relevant bits of the Qt source code that implement
qTopLevelDomain() (including the generated table in qurltlds_p.h) and
rebuilt it as a standalone test program on my machine, and it seems to
be working fine. Next step is to do a full rebuild of Qt to compare.

/class/mem/null' the permissions to /dev/null changes to
