Title:
  [vmwgfx] Update to mesa and xorg-server causes Cinnamon desktop to not
  render properly

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in mesa package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  On a VMWare Workstation VM running Linux Mint 20.1 (64-bit) with
  Cinnamon 4.8.6 or Linux Mint 20.2 (64-bit) with Cinnamon 5.0.5,
  upgrading to a specific mesa and xorg-server version, followed by a
  system restart, led to the Cinnamon desktop not rendering correctly,
  such that the desktop was unusable. The rendering problem is that
  icons and menus are displayed as grey rectangles and it's not possible
  to see what they are.

  I believe the problem is in one of these packages:

  * mesa 21.0.3-0ubuntu0.2-20.04.1
  * xorg-server 2:1.20.11-1ubuntu1-20.04.2

  Restoring the system from backup, and then upgrading but omitting the above
two updates and restarting, the system behaves as expected. It's not
immediately clear which of these packages is causing the problem.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1941752] Re: Regression: exiv2 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.5 makes Gwenview crash when opening images exported by darktable

  Regression: exiv2 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.5 makes Gwenview crash when opening
  images exported by darktable

Bug description:
  Since the recent security update of exiv2, Gwenview crashes when
  trying to open image files that got exported by darktable.

  Steps to reproduce:

  * Make a test installation of Kubuntu 21.04 in VirtualBox
  * Install all updates
  * Install darktable
  * Copy one of the images in /usr/share/wallpapers (or any other image) to
your home directory and open it with darktable
  * Within darktable, export a copy of the image (no need to do any actual
modifications)
  * Try to open that copy with Gwenview. Gwenview will crash.

  I'm attaching a crash report hinting that this is related to exiv2.

  Temporary workaround:
  If I downgrade libexiv2-27 to 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.4, Gwenview doesn't crash, so
it seems the crash is related to changes in 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.5.

  I don't know if the underlying cause is actually some bug in exiv2,
  Gwenview or darktable.

  Kind regards, Jan

This sounds related, but it was closed by Cinnamon blaming the graphics
library:

and is now in:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1938998] Re: [vmwgfx] Update to mesa and xorg-server causes Cinnamon desktop to not render properly

2022-01-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks.

It looks like there's a basic texturing problem in OpenGL. Since that's
done entirely in software for VMs, this should be assigned either to
Mesa or to Cinnamon itself. I don't think we need to involve the kernel.

https://github.com/libexpat/libexpat/issues/501

With that said, it doesn't seem like an upstream fix is likely any time
soon, as is suggested by this comment by one of the members of the
`libexpat` GitHub team on this NixOS pull request addressing this issue:
https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/128997#issuecomment-873137856

NixOS seems to have a custom packaging setup, so the fix above is most
likely not applicable.

** Bug watch added: github.com/libexpat/libexpat/issues #501
   https://github.com/libexpat/libexpat/issues/501

** Description changed:

  Using the package provided by Ubuntu Impish results in the following

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1955997] Re: The airplane hotkey has no function on a HP platform

2022-01-11 Thread Lukas Märdian
Okay, so the current patch is for Focal? Please also provide debdiffs
for Jammy and Impish, as we'll stick with v249 (in Jammy) for the LTS
and Impish will not see a systemd update either. We need to fix it in
Jammy first, before we can start SRUing the change.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  The airplane hokey doesn't work on HP new generation machines.

  [Test Plan]
  Press airplane hokey.

  Before the patch, nothing happens.
  After the patch, the rfkill works as expected.

  [Where problems could occur]
  In non-gnome ubuntu, if the specific dmi contains HPQ6001, then airplane will
not work but HP confirmed the new HP generation won't contain the HPQ6001 and
also each DM still need to deal with multi-rfkill events because upstream
changes[2].

  ---

  In the last year, HP mentions HP machines need to use hp-wireless
  (HPQ6001) as the rfkill source[1].

  However, HP confirms the HPQ6001 has been retired in the platforms
  since 2022.

  In the platforms after 2022, there are two sources of rkfill events
(intel-hid, atkbd) and HP only guarantee the intel-hid works.
  Therefore, the upstream already accept the patch[2] to unmask intel-hid and
mention this big change in the NEWS.

  This change makes the pre-2022 HP platforms meet the regression since they
have two rfkill events (HPQ6001 and intel-hid) be triggered if pressing
function key.
  Thus, there is a patch[3] to make sure the GNOME could deal with this case
smoothly.
  However, the systemd change will still cause other DEs meet the regression
(xfce, KDE, lxde, etc..).
  Backport systemd change to make HP 2022 platforms work is not the best choice
on stable version (focal in this case).

  We still need a solution to make airplane key works on 2022 HP platforms
(intel-hid and atkbd only).
  The potential solution from my mind that is to maintain a whitelist to unmask
intel-hid in ubuntu-patch in focal, something like:
  ```
  evdev:name:Intel HID events:dmi:bvn*:bvr*:bd*:svnHP*:pnHPZBookFury16inchG9*:*
   KEYBOARD_KEY_8=wlan # Use hp-wireless instead
  ```
  after "KEYBOARD_KEY_8=unkown".

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1956915] Re: New bugfix release 21.2.6

2022-01-11 Thread UlfZibis
I have installed version 21.2.6 by:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/display && sudo apt upgrade
since some time.
I never had noticed problems and bug 1950044 was fixed by that.

  [Impact]

  This is the last point-release of the 21.2.x-series, we should put it
  in impish so latest bugfixes would get there, and in focal for 20.04.4
  image.

  [Test case]

  Install the updates, test desktop use and some basic games etc on at
  least AMD and Intel hw.

  [Where things could go wrong]

  It's possible that some apps (like games) might regress on some hw,
  but there should not be a big risk for more wider bugs appearing in
  this update, since upstream and vendor (Intel) CI machinery have
  tested these.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1677781] Re: Missing dep8 tests

2022-01-11 Thread Andreas Hasenack
We were recently hit by bug #1956833, where GSS-SPNEGO was suddenly
disabled and nobody noticed until an app tried to use it.

For that case, I'm thinking about a very simple test that would be like
this:

for algo in $ALGORITHMS; do
  saslpluginviewer -m $algo > /dev/null || {
echo "Algorithm $algo not available"
exit 1
  }
done

And ALGORITHMS is a list of the algorithms we expect to always be available,
like:
  SCRAM-SHA-1 SCRAM-SHA-256 GS2-IAKERB GS2-KRB5 GSS-SPNEGO GSSAPI DIGEST-MD5
EXTERNAL CRAM-MD5 NTLM PLAIN LOGIN ANONYMOUS

  As of March 29, 2017, this source package did not contain dep8 tests in

  determined by running `pull-lp-source cyrus-sasl2 zesty` and then
  checking for the existence of 'debian/tests/' and
  'debian/tests/control'.

  Test automation is essential to higher levels of quality and confidence
  in updates to packages. dep8 tests [1] specify how automatic testing can
  be integrated into packages and then run by package maintainers before

  This defect is to report the absence of these tests and to report the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1838151] Re: Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing wide band speech support (Bluetooth A2DP codecs).

2022-01-11 Thread Jean-
Hi everyone,

small progress report :

I tried the pipewire trick and it didn't work out for me, while it initially
seemed to work: auto switch to the HSP/HPF profile didn't work and after a
manual switch the headset would drop out during a conversation.
I reverted to pulseaudio and invested a bit more time, now I am _almost_ there :

I had to add the following to ~/.config/pulse/default.pa

.include /etc/pulse/default.pa
.nofail
unload-module module-bluetooth-policy
.fail
.ifexists module-bluetooth-policy.so
load-module module-bluetooth-policy auto_switch=2
.endif

.ifexists module-bluetooth-discover.so
load-module module-bluetooth-discover
.endif

to get the autoswitch to work.

I am happy to report that in slack (from snap) the audio now behaves just right
and friends tell me I no longer sound like a robot.
Unfortunately this still doesn't work with zoom and there seems to be multiple
issues. They probably come from zoom itself but I am unsure what to report to
them.

according to https://gavv.github.io/articles/pulseaudio-under-the-
hood/#autodetecting-properties it should be possible to make pulseaudio
understand that it has to switch profiles by changing
/usr/share/applications/Zoom.desktop and adding Telephony to the
categories. I have not been able to make this work without auto_switch=2

Here are two scenarios that fail:
after a fresh boot (so all the stars are aligned), start zoom, create a new
meeting, start the recording, say a few words, stop the recording, stop the
meeting, open the resulting audio or video file
the sound is bad when it is expected to be good.

After a fresh boot (so all the stars are aligned), start zoom, go to
settings-> audio, after doing this my headset is non functional and I
must shut it down and start it back up to restore functionality.

can someone help me determine what zoom is doing wrong ?

I will also try a few other apps in the coming weeks

Bug description:
  Bluetooth HSP/HFP audio quality is poor on Ubuntu comparative to all
  other major platforms (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS).

  Modern Bluetooth headsets (such as the Bose QC series headphones, many
  others) are capable of using HFP 1.6 with mSBC 16kHz audio encoding.
  As it currently stands, Ubuntu defaults to only supporting HSP
  headsets using 8kHz CVSD, and is incapable of supporting HFP 1.6 at
  this time.

  The ChromiumOS team recently tackled this issue -
  https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843048

  Their efforts may assist in bringing this to Ubuntu, however it
  appears that there are quite a lot of differences considering they
  have developed their own audio server solution etc.

  The Bluetooth Telephony Working Group published the HFP 1.6 spec in
  May 2011 -
  https://www.bluetooth.org/docman/handlers/downloaddoc.ashx?doc_id=238193

  Patches have been proposed in the past for this issue to the kernel
  and PulseAudio:

  PulseAudio: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/245272/
  Kernel: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg76982.html

  It appears that the Chromium OS team applied the same kernel patch:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1948533] Re: (No Subject)

2022-01-11 Thread Tiphen Ti
Hi Marc,

will the issue of dns specified in network-manager not being forward in vpn
tunnel when using openvpn (bug occuring ONLY on current ubuntu 21.10)
will it be solved on next ubuntu release??
I really hope so since it will be a LTS

(dns leaks are common on linux when using openvpn and putting one
(whitchever one) in NM is such a simple and universal fix, one I
recomend all my friends and clients...

I tried other distros (fedora, debian10 and 11, manjaro) none are
affected

I need to know if I need to leave ubuntu (currently reverted to ubunut 20.04
witch is not affected by this (up to 21.04 ubuntu was behaving as expected on
this).
I used ubuntu for nearly 10 years but this issue is critical for me.
Thanks a lot

  on gnome/mate/xubuntu only in 21.10)

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  in all linux including ubuntu up to version 21.04, when dns is set to not
automatic in network manager and one dns is set manually (exemple 1.1.1.1) when
openvpn is used the dns is going through the vpn tunnel.
  On ubuntu 21.10 (I tested ubuntu, ubuntu mate and xubuntu)I can affirm the
dns in this case is not going trough the vpn.it is leaking.I have used ubuntu
for years this is first time this problem occurs (21.10).(and it s not just a
question of packages because on my arch linux installs I never had such
problem, so it must be a config problem.

  (when using packages stubby or dnscrypt-proxy (to encrypt dns queries)
  and dns 127.0.0.1 is set in network-manager the dns does goes trough
  the vpn (but stubby service needs to be sometimes reloded, it is less
  reliable that it used to be with previous versions of ubuntu)

  (I cannot speculate where the bug is from (network-manager, systemd
  resolved etc)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1957104] [NEW] updating openssh-server fails, because port 22 is in use by systemd

2022-01-11 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Public bug reported:

openssh-server tries to restart itself, but openssh-server reports port
22 in use. This is true: systemd has taken port 22 to start sshd if one
connects to port 22.

two solutions:
1. dont start sshd after installing.
   configure it without starting it afterwards.
2. stop systemd listening on port 22
   before starting sshd, then start sshd,
   terminate it after configuring, then
   start systemd listening on port 22 again.

Second problem:
starting ssh.service does not check if "/run/sshd" exists. This directory has
to be created before sshd is started. Unclear if this is an error with sshd not
creating this directory before dropping privileges or if this has to be done
once while installing. IMHO the first is the case.

Workaround:
systemctl stop ssh.service
systemctl disable ssh.service
apt upgrade
systemctl enable ssh.service
killall sshd
mkdir /run/sshd
systemctl start ssh.service

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 21.10

Bug description:
  Since the recent security update of exiv2, Gwenview crashes when
  trying to open image files that got exported by darktable.

  Steps to reproduce:

  * Make a test installation of Kubuntu 21.04 in VirtualBox
  * Install all updates
  * Install darktable

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1955347] Re: rsync works bad with encfs now

2022-01-11 Thread Robie Basak
It seems to be like this is a bug in encfs rather than in rsync? I
appreciate newer rsync might have changed behaviour, but ultimately
encfs needs to provide a regular (if virtual) filesystem. Where it
doesn't, rsync can't be expected to work.

Is there any specific reason to think that encfs is working correctly in
your failure case?

Title:
  rsync works bad with encfs now

Status in rsync package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hello,
  I think rsync works bad with encfs now.

  When root uses it, rsync cannot read a directory encrypted with encfs
  by a user. More precisely, it cannot read the mounted directory, the
  virtual one where the user can read the datas.

  Until now there was only a warning like this
  "rsync: readlink_stat("/home/claude/Documents_chiffres") failed:
  Permission denied (13)"
  and the software went on working (only ignoring the content of the mounted
directory and of course without saving this content)

  But recently there is this more:
  "IO error encountered -- skipping file deletion"
  and because of this "skipping file deletion", the software can't work
normally. The destination gets bigger more and more because the deleted files
in the source are not deleted in the destination.

  Thanks for reading me.
  rsync 3.1.3-8ubuntu0.1
  Description:Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS
  Release:20.04

  ```
  evdev:name:Intel HID events:dmi:bvn*:bvr*:bd*:svnHP*:pnHPZBookFury16inchG9*:*
   KEYBOARD_KEY_8=wlan # Use hp-wireless instead
  ```
  after "KEYBOARD_KEY_8=unkown".

Bug description:
  Since the recent security update of exiv2, Gwenview crashes when
  trying to open image files that got exported by darktable.

  Steps to reproduce:

  * Make a test installation of Kubuntu 21.04 in VirtualBox
  * Install all updates
  * Install darktable

There is no ipv6 answer configured, so it is ok to return an empty/bad answer.

But dnsmasq should not fall into a forwarding loop right?
Or does this test make a hard configuration mistake (always did) that now
in 2.86 exposes an issue, but was always wrong?

The original test command of `resolvectl query math.lab` gets into a "wait
until timeout" with the new behavior.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1957086] Re: Autopkgtest systemd fail against dnsmasq 2.86 (22.04)

2022-01-11 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
As usual once you know what you search for the results are much better.

It turns out that it might be related to one of those reports:
- https://lists.thekelleys.org.uk/pipermail/dnsmasq-discuss/2022q1/016015.html
- https://lists.thekelleys.org.uk/pipermail/dnsmasq-discuss/2022q1/016069.html

But even better was the finding that Debian at 249-5-2 was affected by the same.
- https://ci.debian.net/packages/s/systemd/unstable/amd64/
-
https://ci.debian.net/data/autopkgtest/unstable/amd64/s/systemd/16383273/log.gz

That seems to be fixed since systemd 249.6-1 and checking that made me
find

To me there is nothing obvious in regard to this in debian
=> https://salsa.debian.org/systemd-team/systemd/-/commits/debian/master
nor in upstream
=> https://github.com/systemd/systemd-stable/commits/v249.6

But I think this is enough to get the bug reported and maybe eyes more used
to systemd will see the related fix as it seems it must be there somewhere ...

@systemd maintainer (Lukas?) does this ring a bell to you or do you see the
change that might have fixed this?
Also is there a PPA with a Ubuntu build of >=249.6-1 to check if it resolves
the issue also in Ubuntu?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1949970] Re: attempt to dlopen nonexistent pam_kwallet.so spams log

2022-01-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package lightdm - 1.30.0-0ubuntu4.21.10.1

Bug description:

  lightdm's pam.d config includes an attempt to dlopen pam_kwallet.so as
  well as pam_kwallet5.so, however pam_wallet.so comes from pam-kwallet
  which died around Trusty (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pam-
  kwallet) while pam_kwallet5.so comes from kwallet-pam which provides
  only the newer '5' version, not the older unversioned library file.

  This results in repeated spam error messages in the system log
  complaining about failure to load pam_kwallet.so

  [test case]

  install/enable lightdm and check system log at boot for messages like:

  Nov 04 18:17:47 thrain lightdm[2510]: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_kwallet.so):
/lib/security/pam_kwallet.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory
  Nov 04 18:17:47 thrain lightdm[2510]: PAM adding faulty module: pam_kwallet.so

  [regression potential]

  any regression would likely cause problems during login and/or missing
  or extra log messages during pam authentication.

  [scope]

  this is needed in all releases
