[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509846] Re: lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

2015-11-05 Thread Davernos
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1510970 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1510970

@aldebx, I have just recreated the crash with 4.3.0-040300-generic. Same
symptoms after moving Windows around on LibreOffice. Going back to xfce.

Title:
  lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Symptom: xorg crashes on windows creation

  How to reproduce: No 100% reproducibility, however intensively using
  2D/3D acceleration triggers the bug (e.g. by opening several new
  windows and/or menus in a Unity desktop environment)

  Affected hardware: Intel HD Graphics 4400/5000 etc
  Affected software:
  - kernel 4.2.0-16-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Thu Oct 8 15:35:06 UTC 2015 x86_64
  - Ubuntu 15.10 with Unity (because of compiz 2D/3D acceleration)
  - any other software using direct rendering (e.g. VLC)

  Workaround:
  - Disable window animations in Compiz reduces the frequency of the crashes.
  Use compizconfig-settings-manager for this tweak (sudo apt-get install
compizconfig-settings-manager)

  [original description below]

  I get crashes, when I open a new window in an already started
  application. It happens irregularely, but I can force the crash if I
  open several new message windows in thunderbird. But it also happens
  in other applilcations, for example a new terminal window.

  This is the output during the crash in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1513375] Re: low battery indicator should beep

2015-11-05 Thread Dominik
I suppose it might beep (configurable sound?) once at 10%, then at 5%
and after that every 10 minutes, by default. With an option for beeping
every 20, 10, 5 and 2 minutes after the 5% mark.

All this when the screen is off, of course. A visual cue should be
enough if the screen is on.

  As per bug comment, SIM import shouldn't sit permanently in the header. This
feature is already available in the app settings of the Address Book app.
  The only time user see the "Import" icon is at first time launch but this is
a different issue.

Those strings seem to come from the ubuntu-ui-toolkit
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-sdk-team/ubuntu-ui-toolkit/staging/view/head:/src/Ubuntu/Components/plugin/i18n.cpp#L267

But the strings from that files are not in the launchpad template...

Bug description:
  When I try to upgrade from 15.10 Wily to 16.04 Xenial (actual
  development version) within an LXC container, the upgrade script hangs
  at the message „Calculating the changes”.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Make an LXC container with Wily (quickest option is to use lxc-create -t
download, choose ubuntu, wily, amd64/i386).
  2. Boot up the container, log in, „apt-get -y install
ubuntu-release-upgrader-core”.
  3. Start the upgrade with „do-release-upgrade -d”.

  You will see that the upgrade process will hang at the message
  „Calculating the changes”.

  The process which hangs: „/usr/bin/python3 /tmp/ubuntu-release-
  upgrader-1mpotr5d/xenial --mode=server --frontend=DistUpgradeViewText
  --devel-release”

  With strace, it is revealed that the process hangs at a „futex” system call:
  futex(0x7f419c10, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 0, NULL

  This system call never returns, the process must be interrupted with
  CTRL-C or kill.

  Upgrading to any previous release within an LXC container works
  without problems, therefore I consider it as a regression.

  Ubuntu.Components version: 1.3

  Some times it is desirable that none of the entries in the
head.sections.model is selected by default.
  While that works fine on statically created pages, if I define a page inside
a component, or load it directly from a QML file, this is not respected.

  The following sample QML application reproduces the problem:

  import QtQuick 2.3
  import Ubuntu.Components 1.3

  MainView {
  width: units.gu(30)
  height: units.gu(60)
  Component {
  id: pageComponent
  Page {
  id: page
  title: i18n.tr("The Page")
  head.sections.model: ["one","two","three"]
  head.sections.selectedIndex: -1
  }
  }

  PageStack {
  id: stack
  }

  Component.onCompleted: {
  stack.push(pageComponent)
  }
  }

  Expected result: a page with no section selected.
  What happens: the first section of the header is selected by default

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1511553] Re: Crash in queueRequest

2015-11-05 Thread Pete Woods
Well I'd also argue that level DB is a problem too, if it can't say "try
acquire lock up to some timeout". If it can only do an immediate "lock
could not be acquired" type failure, I guess it's not the end of the
world to try and get the lock every n milliseconds up to the timeout
instead.

  Confirmed

Bug description:
  https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/fa22f0b18ff6dc949c4cdf768f32121d64a83b8d

  We hit this occasionally, but not very often. I suspect it is because
  of the way we shut down: we destroy the thumbnailer instance before
  the dbus interface so we don't hit the race condition where one
  instance of the service still has the database lock while a second
  instance of the service is activated by a new incoming request. But,
  destroying the thumbnailer first means that, if a request arrives at
  just the right time, the dbu sinterface fires the request at the
  already-destroyed thumbnailer.

  I recently hit a whole slew of issues in a test that destroyed the
  thumbnailer and dbus interface (in that order) while there were still
  requests sitting in the scheduler and thread pools, and fixed a bunch
  of these issues (see the request-cancellation branch.) In effect, via
  the handler class that calls back into the thumbnailer and the
  closures that sit in the thread pools, we have created a circular
  dependency between the dbus interface and thumbnailer, which makes it
  impossible to shut down either without causing problems.

  I think the best solution would be to add a shutdown() method to the
  dbus interface that prevents new requests from firing. We also need
  some way to wait for all *received* (not just scheduled) requests to
  finish executing before physically shutting down.

  Does DBus have a way to say "I'm in the process of shutting down. Send
  the request that just arrived and that I can't process anymore to a
  new instance of the service"? Ideally, I would like to "close the
  gate" on incoming requests such that they are transparently re-sent,
  and then wait for all currently executing requests to finish
  processing.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem,
rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete.

If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers
to get help for this sort of problem here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it
helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem
specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

  This I consider a bug, since user cannot depend on the such a device
  with hearing calls in the morning.

  Typical scenario: listening to music/watching movies during the night
  and falling asleep. It already happened several times to me that I did
  not get awakened by the phone in the morning, since headphones were
  plugged into the device and all the sounds could be heard only in
  headphones.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1245826] Re: Allow applying a hook to multiple files

2015-11-05 Thread Alberto Mardegan
As far as I am concerned, this bug is no longer important. It's very
easy to workaround this limitation by having the hook process a JSON
file containing all the information needed: the list of files can be put
in there.

You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu

Title:
  Allow applying a hook to multiple files

Status in click package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  Currently, a click hook can be applied to a single file. However, in
  some cases it might be needed for a click package to install several
  files in the same directory. For instance, a click package installing
  a new account plugin which provides different services (for instance,
  a website could provide an e-mail service, instant messaging, file
  sharing, etc.) which are represented to libaccounts via XMl files
  installed to /usr/share/accounts/services (or
  ~/.local/share/accounts/services).

  I would suggest providing the hook's "Pattern" field with a variable
  holding the filename of the source file (just the base name, with the
  path stripped out), so that it can be used to differentiate the
  symlinks in the target directory. So one could write a Pattern like
  this for libaccounts's services:

Pattern: ${home}/.local/share/accounts/services/${id}_${basename}

  Then also the manifest file should allow specifying a list of files:

  "hooks": {
  "example-app": {
"apparmor": "apparmor/example-app.json",
"desktop": "example-app.desktop",
"account-service": ["cool-email.service", "cool-chat.service"]
  }
}

  More information about Qt 5.4 at:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/QtTesting

  --- original report ---

  There's a critical bug that is being fixed with the following MP:

  https://code.launchpad.net/~abreu-alexandre/ubuntu-system-settings-
  online-accounts/use-hw-compositiing-oxide-rtm-1409/+merge/23

  This bug is about removing the need for that, since using private
  headers causes extra pain for Qt migrations and we should minimize
  their usage.

  Could Oxide provide this somehow else, so that only Oxide would use
  the private headers (like it already does)?

  Update: not blocker for Qt 5.4, but simply something that would help
  Qt transitions in future by removing 5 packages from the transition
  list

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1510709] Re: In Wily GTK libs depend upon additional packages relative to Vivid

2015-11-05 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Please don't subscribe Debian package uploaders to bugs on Launchpad. If
you want us to receive your bug report, file it on Debian BTS instead.

P.S. I don't see anything unusual in apt-rdepends output.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1512902] Re: apport will create .upload files for incomplete or corrupt crash reports

Title:
  apport will create .upload files for incomplete or corrupt crash
  reports

Status in apport package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in apport source package in Wily:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  SRU information appears in comment #3.

  apport will set an UnreportableReason in the following situations for
  crash reports where information collection fails or for packages that
  do not exist.  From apport/ui.py:

  1036 try:
  1037 icthread.exc_raise()
  1038 except (IOError, EOFError, zlib.error) as e:
  1039 # can happen with broken core dumps
  1040 self.report['UnreportableReason'] = '%s\n\n%s' % (
  1041 _('This problem report is damaged and cannot be
processed.'),
  1042 repr(e))
  1043 except ValueError: # package does not exist
  1044 self.report['UnreportableReason'] = _('The report
belongs to a package that is not installed.')
  1045 except Exception as e:
  1046 apport.error(repr(e))
  1047 self.report['UnreportableReason'] = _('An error
occurred while attempting to '
  1048   'process this
problem report:') + '\n\n' + str(e)

  Because an UnreportableReason exists in the report, apport will stop
  collecting information. Subsequently, there is "_MarkForUpload" is
  left as True (the default) so apport calls mark_report_upload which
  creates a .upload file such that the report which is incomplete or
  corrupt is then uploaded to the Error Tracker.

  In these cases the "_MarkForUpload" key should be set to "False"
  thereby preventing uploads to the Error Tracker.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1506468] Re: address-book-app not synching to Google contacts if e-mail field is empty

2015-11-05 Thread tommaso gardumi
Hi, I am currently on a bq Aquaris E5 hd with last OTA7 and I can
confirm it is solved for me. I created a new contact only with name and
telephone number, it didn't show immediately in google'contact but after
switching off and on again contacts sync in accounts settings it got
synched. What I still cannot do, is moving previously created contacts
stored in "Personal" to a different account, but that's probably a new
bug/feature request.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1513450] Re: higher than expected cpu for unity8

2015-11-05 Thread Michael Zanetti
Some observations:

* For me, this happens only when the Bluetooth page in systemsettings is opened.
* Doesn't matter if windowed or staged mode
* Happens on all devices

turns out the Bluetooth Page in systemsettings is animating 3
ActivityIndicators even when they are not visible.

Not sure how that causes unity8's CPU usage to be that high, but the
linked ubuntu-system-settings branch improves the situation a lot.

However, given that the ActivityIndicators are invisible, we probably
should investigate why they keep on triggering rendering updates.

Adding ubuntu-system-settings, qtmir and qtubuntu.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1513450] Re: higher than expected cpu for unity8

2015-11-05 Thread Michael Zanetti
Perhaps the UITK should be added to. The ActivityIndicator should not
calculate the animations all the when visible is false.

Marking unity8 as invalid as this is what it takes to constantly render
an animated app surface. It might be improved in QtMir, but not much
that unity8 can do about it.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1511439] Re: webbrowser-app apparmor policy fails to load on desktop

2015-11-05 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Got it. As a side note, there’s nothing in the package’s description
that suggests it’s for click apps only:

Description-en: AppArmor easyprof templates for Ubuntu
 Provides AppArmor easyprof templates and policygroups suitable for use with
 the Ubuntu app ecosystem.

Maybe the description should be updated to make that clear?

  This was tested on xenial but affects wily too if it is shipping the
  policy.

  The problem is that apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu normally ships these
directories, but it is not installed by default on the desktop image. I suggest
shipping these empty directories via the webbrowser-app's packaging:
  - /usr/share/apparmor/hardware/audio.d
  - /usr/share/apparmor/hardware/graphics.d
  - /usr/share/apparmor/hardware/video.d

  Corrupted display of Qt4 Applications

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  When I run Qt4 based Applications either from konsole or from Creator the
windows' content will look very disturbed, rendering the program absolutely
useless. This happens only if Android Studio is running at the same time
(Version 1.4, JDK 1.7.0_79). If I close Ansroid Studio (almost) everything is
fine again. (Well almost, as there's also a problem with Qt4 command link
buttons and HiDPI displays, but that's another story.)
  The applies for file dialogs in chromium (it uses kde4 libs, I suppose?).
When AS is running, the file dialogs will be unusable, if I close it all is
good.
  I haven't tested it with other Java based applications yet, so it might just
be the JDK. (It's the Oracle one, I think, or whatever Google makes you
download.)

Title:
  Delay during PXE Boot, IP-Config gives up

Status in klibc package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in klibc package in Debian:
  New

Bug description:
  Attempting to PXE boot both the 12.04.3 and 14.04 Live images. PXE
  boot works normally (PXE Menu, select desired image, image begins
  loading), then the boot process hangs while IP-Config attempts to get
  an IP address:

  IP-Config: eth0 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:7e mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: eth1 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:80 mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: no response after 2 secs - giving up
  IP-Config: eth0 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:7e mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: eth1 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:80 mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: no response after 3 secs - giving up

  These lines appear very quickly (5 seconds has NOT elapsed), after
  about a minute, we get this:

  IP-Config: eth0 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:7e mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: eth1 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:80 mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: no response after 4 secs - giving up

  Some time later, this:

  IP-Config: eth0 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:7e mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: eth1 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:80 mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: no response after 6 secs - giving up

  Until finally, this:

  IP-Config: eth0 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:7e mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: eth1 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:80 mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: no response after 9 secs - giving up
  IP-Config: eth0 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:7e mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: eth1 hardware address e0:db:55:0c:34:80 mtu 1500 DHCP
  IP-Config: eth0 guessed broadcast address 172.25.11.31
  IP-Config: eth0 complete (dhcp from 172.25.10.20):
  (snip)

  While watching the DHCP server logs, Ubuntu is either not sending a
  DHCP Discover at times, or is not replying back with a DHCPRequest
  during these sessions, presumably ignoring an response from the DHCP
  server. From the initial booting of the system via PXE, to when
  Ubuntu finally shows the desktop, almost 12 minutes will have elapsed.

  I am seeing this same behavior on both 12.04.3 and 14.04. After
  finding a number of similar erros via Google and no real resolution, I
  have opened this bug.

  The system experiencing this issue has multiple ethernet interfaces
  (actual HW, not a VM), some Google found solutions suggest hard coding
  DEVICE=eth0 in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf, however this isn't
  acceptable as a system attempting to PXE boot may be using an
  alternate port for the network.

  I have found what looks to be a very similar bug filed for Debian,
  #584583, which also contains a patch for this issue (under Debian).

  I have no problems in PXE booting to various Windows, RedHat, Centos,
  or Fedora OSs. Ubuntu is the only Live OS that I'm attempting to boot
  at present.

Re: [Touch-packages] [Bug 1466551] Re: Import Sim card contacts

2015-11-05 Thread Csernátoni Csaba
I am using a Meizu MX4, with OTA-7 (it was about 82 MB, maybe that helps
with its identification). I have about 30-40 contacts on my SIM.

I will try to run those commands after I finish work today, but I have one
SIM only.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509081] Re: nano segfaults as root after upgrade to 15.10

2015-11-05 Thread reedy
The patch works!

Got a little confused by caching of the paths, which was returning
/usr/local/bin/nano, but without the qualified path, it was using
/bin/nano. Easily fixed

What happens next? I noticed your thread over at
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/nano-devel/2015-11/msg0.html - I
guess a patch to their svn, and then something related in debian/ubuntu
repo? Then poking someone to get a new package built and distributed?

Thanks!

Bug description:
  https://www.exploit-db.com/exploits/37710/

  As descpribed in the link above, sudo versions lower or equal than
  1.8.14 have a security issue: user with root access to a path with
  more than one wildcard can access forbidden files such as /etc/shadow,
  because sudoedit (sudo -e) does not verifiy full path of accessed
  file:

  (quote from link above)

  It seems that sudoedit does not check the full path if a wildcard is used
  twice (e.g. /home/*/*/file.txt), allowing a malicious user to replace the
  file.txt real file with a symbolic link to a different location (e.g.
  /etc/shadow).

  As an expample,

  1. Give user `usr' right to edit some his files:

  usr ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: sudoedit /home/*/*/test.txt

  2. Under usr, create ~/temp directory, and then create a symblink
  ~/temp/test.txt to /etc/shadow

  3. Perform sudoedit ~/temp/test.txt - you will able to access
  /etc/shadow.

  What realease is affected: tested on all supported now Ubuntu
  versions. For personaly me, it's 14.04 LTS.

  What version is affected: as mentioned, all versions <=1.8.14. For
  personally me, it's 1.8.9p5

  What was expected and happend instead: sudoedit should check full real
  path, but it didn't.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1511553] Re: Crash in queueRequest

2015-11-05 Thread Michi Henning
Yes, fair point, although this functionality is really easy to layer on
top so, arguably, not leveldb's job. But what is annoying is that, when
the DB is locked, no unique error code is returned for the condition.
Instead, the fact that the DB is locked gets lumped into the same status
code that is used to indicate dozens of other problems. Sigh… When will
people learn that it is necessary for the calling code to tell different
error conditions apart without having to parse the text in the error
string? :-(

I think I'll just use a lock file of our own around the
initialisation/finalization.

  Crash in queueRequest

Ideally, I would like to "close the
  gate" on incoming requests such that they are transparently re-sent,
  and then wait for all currently executing requests to finish
  processing.

Ah. But then applying the patch should have failed. Did you edit the

Nevermind. See the updated patch for version 2.4.2. (Yes, sorry, SVN

All this when the screen is off, of course. A visual cue should be

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1485522] Re: Volume obtained is 100% in multimedia sink for sounds from app

Bug description:
  I'm not sure 100% this is a bug but it is related to
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1478506

  When the "Marron in trouble" games launches a sound the multimedia
  sink it's updated and when reading the volume it's always 100%.

  I'ts not 100% for other applications using the multimedia role, like
  the music app or other games/apps. The volume in that case is in sync
  with the volume that was previously set for it.

  This is the code from the indicator-sound where we get the 100%
  volume.

  var props_variant = yield _pconn.call
("org.PulseAudio.Ext.StreamRestore1.RestoreEntry",
sink_input_objp,
"org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties", "Get",
new Variant ("(ss)",
"org.PulseAudio.Ext.StreamRestore1.RestoreEntry", "Volume"),
null, DBusCallFlags.NONE, -1);
Variant tmp;
props_variant.get ("(v)", out tmp);
uint32 type = 0, volume = 0;
VariantIter iter = tmp.iterator ();
iter.next ("(uu)", , );

  I did a workaround branch in the indicator-sound that reads the volume
  at initilaization for every role and stores any change When the sink
  is updated I read the volume in it that is already stored instead of
  reading the volume from pulse.

  I'm not convinced of that, and would like to know why I get 100%
  volume only for this particular game.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1513169] Re: [USB-Audio - MDR-1ADAC, playback] volume muting problem.

2015-11-05 Thread Raymond
** Changed in: alsa-driver (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Incomplete

You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1513169

Title:
  [USB-Audio - MDR-1ADAC, playback] volume muting problem.

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  My device is getting muted every time I plug it in. It's muted in ALSA - the
ALSA mixer is the only place I can unmute it.
  In alsamixer Card: MDR-1ADAC, Chip: USB Mixer, there I see 2 items - iAP
interface and iAP interface 1. I need to unmute both, to be able to hear the
audio.
  This is real inconvenience now, however it was a big problem until I
discovered that the device is just muted, and still working.
  This behaviour is sins my last update on 2015-11-2 before that the device was
working properly every time, no unmuting was ever required.

  Here is what I found about that:
  In /var/lib/alsa/asound.state I have this about the device
  state.MDR1ADAC {
control.1 {
iface PCM
name 'Playback Channel Map'
value.0 0
value.1 0
comment {
access read
type INTEGER
count 2
range '0 - 36'
}
}
control.2 {
iface MIXER
name 'iAP Interface Playback Switch'
value.0 false
value.1 false
comment {
access 'read write'
type BOOLEAN
count 2
}
}
control.3 {
iface MIXER
name 'iAP Interface Playback Switch'
index 1
value false
comment {
access 'read write'
type BOOLEAN
count 1
}
}
control.4 {
iface MIXER
name 'iAP Interface Playback Volume'
value.0 127
value.1 127
comment {
access 'read write'
type INTEGER
count 2
range '0 - 127'
dbmin -12700
dbmax 0
dbvalue.0 0
dbvalue.1 0
}
}
control.5 {
iface MIXER
name 'iAP Interface Playback Volume'
index 1
value 127
comment {
access 'read write'
type INTEGER
count 1
range '0 - 127'
dbmin -12700
dbmax 0
dbvalue.0 0
}
}
  }

  for control.2 I change the values to true
  value.0 true
  value.1 true
  and then for control.3 I change the value to true.

  After this changes the USB device is no longer muted when I pluged it
  in. And this solves my issue for now.

Oh dear, autoconf stuff. Could you post your ./configure to nano-devel
-- this error not directly related to this bug, so let's take it
elsewhere.  On that list (https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/nano-
devel) there will be people who understand autoconf.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1284635] Re: IBus does not support certain keyboard layouts

2015-11-05 Thread Simon Ritchie
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1240198 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1240198

This bug has suddenly become a lot more serious. It appears that it now
affects machines that have applied a standard Linux software update.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 (the current standard). I use a UK keyboard
layout. I applied an upgrade and rebooted, and the "@" key and the
doublequote key were swapped. Uninstalling ibus and rebooting fixed the
problem.

If I understand the issue, it affects anybody with a non-US keyboard,
and different characters will be swapped depending on what keyboard
layout they use.

The problem is that if the user's password contains one of the swapped
characters, they will not be able to log in after upgrading and
rebooting. They logged in successfully last time, so they will simply
see a single box on the screen requesting their password. What they
type will not be displayed, obviously. They type their password and the
system will reject it. Until they know what the problem is, and which
characters get swapped on their keyboard, they can't log in to fix the
problem.

This could affect several million Linux users around the world and
render their machines useless.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509081] Re: nano segfaults as root after upgrade to 15.10

2015-11-05 Thread reedy
Yup, 15.10 seems to. I have never edited the /etc/nanorc file, so I
guess it was just updated to the default package maintainers version as
per the usual. So the grep gives the obvious output:

reedy@ko-kra:~$ grep locking /etc/nanorc
set locking
reedy@ko-kra:~$

Yeah, I ended up applying the patch by hand. I guess debugging tired (on
unfamiliar source code). I should have really noticed what the issue
was!

Will try the patch again on the source from the 15.10 apt repo

Will post the ./configure stuff to nano-devel; that's fine by me. Certainly no
config on my part, rather than just installing the necessary packages
(libncurses dev packages, dh-autoconf etc)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509355] Re: xorg crashes because of intel gpu driver

2015-11-05 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Martin Vysny, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available
from the very top line at the top of the page from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (the release
names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily
folder)? Install instructions are available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . This will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't
boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue
to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, Y, and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this
report's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1494155] Re: [mako] pulseaudio resample methos missing src-sinc-*

2015-11-05 Thread Tynach
Nowhere in either the parent post, nor in the comments, is 'bang for the
buck' even talked about. The entire thing seems to be about choosing a
higher quality default sampling method due to the availability of faster
CPUs. In fact, libsamplerate is never mentioned by name, and src-sinc-.*
are only mentioned by listing them with a few others and deeming them
'indistinguishable'.

HOWEVER, in the comments they *do* mention that upsampling causes more
distortion than downsampling, and that sampling rates further apart
cause more than sampling rates closer together. This isn't terribly
important most of the time, except...

... Pulseaudio only supports configuring two sample rates at a time. So
you have a default lower one, and if an audio source has a higher sample
rate, it'll be upsampled to the alternative, higher sample rate.

So what if your alternative sample rate is much higher? I have a sound
card that supports 192000, what if I'm curious what that sounds like? I
have a fairly fast CPU (i7-4790K with hyperthreading disabled so that
each core works as fast as possible), and I have that set up as my
alternative sampling rate.

But the graphs only test conversion from 44100 to 48000. I have a
feeling that the differences will be *much* more noticeable on a setup
converting from 48000 to 192000.

But now I can't compare using src-sinc-.* because its been removed. And
seemingly with no discussion or reason.
