The bad resolution is due to 'nomodeset' on your kernel command line.
To fix that you need to edit /etc/default/grub, remove "nomodeset" and
then run:
sudo update-grub
and reboot.

Upon automatically re-running dpkg --configure -a, the system was able
to sucessfully update. A selection of warnings from the screen (running
in `screen`, so I missed quite a few)

There is nothing to be done by you, but I have seen this issue appear at
least five times so it wouldn't be unreasonable to see the upgrade
process as flawed. What do you get now for
ls -l /usr/share/ghostscript/ ?

HP Officejet Pro 8620 fails printing with filter failed message

So physically at the machine it was only possible to log into the
command prompt. There is no graphical interface available.
To top it off
Network manager was stopped! Not very good for network-manager to be
stopped right after an upgrade.
sudo service network-manager restart
started the networ
Forgot the quotes around 'EOF', tested and it works for me.
Make sure you check if the service is enabled
