[Touch-packages] [Bug 1944951] Re: delayed display update / konsole artifacts

2021-09-27 Thread Horst Schirmeier
Yes! The artifacts reappear when I hit Shift-Alt-F12. Good catch!

Title:
  delayed display update / konsole artifacts

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Since one of the recent Impish updates, konsole shows artifacts and
  reacts slowly. In fact, it looks like screen updates are pipelined on
  pixel-group granularity somehow, and the pipeline isn't drained
  completely: When more text goes to the terminal (e.g., I type
  something), existing artifacts vanish, but new ones (in the new text)
  appear.

  Unfortunately, I don't see any of the previous konsole .deb releases
  (e.g. 4:21.08.1-1 or 4:21.08.0-1) on the Ubuntu mirrors, so I cannot
  go back and simply check whether the newest konsole updates are the
  culprit. I'm actually not sure whether konsole is responsible at all,
  I originally intended to file against xorg; however, I see those
  artifacts in neither xterm nor gnome-terminal.

  Find attached a screenshot (taken with an external camera; these
  artifacts cannot be recorded using a screenshot tool such as
  imagemagick's "import") where I ran "ls" in /tmp, and cleared the
  terminal with ^L afterwards. The screen is still littered with
  remains of the "ls" output. It took a few tries to get artifacts this
  pronounced, though; usually they only concern small parts of the
  terminal.

Title:
  [21.10 FEAT] RoCE: Predictable Interface Names - systemd part

Status in Ubuntu on IBM z Systems:
  Fix Released
Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Feature Description:
  - Interface names for RoCE Express adapters are currently very hard to
predict, causing problems with the installer which requires knowledge of the
interface name
  - Interface names can change between re-boots, invalidating any previously
stored network card configuration
  To fix this requires changes in the Linux kernel to indicate whether UIDs are
unique (and therefore usable), and in systemd to generate an interface name
based on UIDs all the time.

  Business Case:
  Increase usability, lower service efforts.

  The code is in the upstream repository and should eventually be
  contained in the upcoming systemd release 249

  a496a23 udev: fix slot based network names on s390
  b08c3fb udev: add missing initialization to fix freeing invalid address
  5a7eb46 udev: allow onboard index up to 65535

Title:
  Wrong audio output device selected on Raspberry Pi Desktop

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  On each boot, an incorrect audio output device is selected, at least
  when HDMI audio output is in use (still need to test the TV/aux
  output; will update the bug when done).

  Specifically, the settings application lists "Multichannel Output -
  Built-in Audio" as the selected output device. However, for audio to
  play through the connected HDMI device, "Analog Output - Built-in
  Audio" must be selected instead. Unfortunately, this setting will be
  lost on subsequent boots. A workaround is to remove the following
  lines from /etc/pulse/default.pa:

  ### Use hot-plugged devices like Bluetooth or USB automatically (LP:
#1702794)
  .ifexists module-switch-on-connect.so
  load-module module-switch-on-connect
  .endif

  However, removal of these lines will (as the comment suggests) result
  in hot-plugged USB devices *not* being automatically selected.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1691556] Re: Can't send audio to Amazon Echo via Bluetooth

2021-09-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Support for simultaneous high quality input and output over Bluetooth
was only added to PulseAudio in version 15, which is introduced in
Ubuntu 21.10. Please try that: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/

** Also affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu)

  Can't send audio to Amazon Echo via Bluetooth

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Pairing and coupling to Amazon Echo works, but no sound is heard.

  I believe the issue is related to the fact that Amazon Echo is paired
  as a handset (i.e., speaker + microphone) rather than just as a
  speaker. I believe the critical error is found in a dmesg line such
  as:

  Feb 28 10:59:05 n1 bluetoothd[1025]: a2dp-source profile connect
  failed for 50:F5:DA:A6:3F:EA: Device or resource busy

  as I describe in the askubuntu.com discussion at:

  https://askubuntu.com/questions/871630/cant-send-audio-to-amazon-echo-
  via-bluetooth

  I have clarified there my thinking and the steps I've taken thus far
  on this issue, which includes trying debug bluetooth per the Ubuntu
  wiki page which describes how to do so.

  This is probably an upstream issue, as Mike H-R has commented there
  that the problem also occurs on ArchLinux.

  I and a few others would like to get this resolved, and I am happy to
  help (I'm a software developer). However, at this point, I'm not sure
  how to proceed without some assistance. I suppose I could report it
  to Debain, but I've only ever used Debain vis a vis Ubuntu, so I
  thought it best to start here.

  Thanks.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1945056] Re: Xorg freeze

2021-09-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. You appear to be using the 'oibaf' PPA which
is unsupported and often causes bugs like this. Please remove it from
your system using 'ppa-purge', reboot, and then open new bugs for any
further issues you encounter.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  In Ubuntu Impish, an issue has been noted in regards to refreshing
  packages in Plasma Discover for upgrade or installation. An error
  appears upon initialization of the Discover interface:

  "cannot refresh whilst network offline"

  This will happen regardless of if a system is online or not.

  I identified a race condition in which this is occurring on systems
  where packagekitd is initialized before the network service is online.
  This was a relatively easy fix and required adding one line to the
  packagekit.service file:

  Wants=network-online.target

  This ensures that packagekitd is not initialized prior to being
  online. If the 90 second deadline isn't met, then packagekitd will
  simply not start as a background process until the user connects to
  the network and initializes it via a graphical utility, such as with
  GNOME Software or Plasma Discover, both of which initialize
  packagekitd on a user level.

  The attached patch will easily apply the fix via normal Debian
  packaging methods.

  [Test Plan]

   * Install Kubuntu or Ubuntu Studio

   * While connected to network, Run Discover

   * Discover will complain about "cannot refresh whilst offline", which
  is being communicated from PackageKit. All functionality in Discover
  is hindered from this point forward. This is due to a hung packagekitd
  process which sees the network offline, even though this is false.

  [Where problems could occur]

   * packagekitd's systemd service will time-out after 90 seconds if
  systemd finds no network, which means any update notifications will
  not automatically start until packagekitd is manually started.
  Luckily, Discover and GNOME Software both attempt to start packagekitd
  for the user when run. I'd consider this to be expected behavior for
  an offline system. The fix is mostly to prevent the false-negative of
  the system being offline when it's really not.

  [Other Info]

   * This fix has been accepted upstream by the PackageKit maintainers
  as a sane workaround for when gio misbehaves or otherwise. It's a
  decent safety net. https://github.com/PackageKit/PackageKit/pull/506

2021-09-27 Thread Richard Johnson
Created attachment 141971
New crash information added by DrKonqi

gwenview (20.12.3) using Qt 5.15.2

- What I was doing when the application crashed:

This seems to happen reliably on jpg's produced by darktable.
Darktable-rendered pics all cause the crash. These were all NEF (Nikon)
raw processed into jpg. JPG's made by other tools seem to all work
fine.

Title:
  Regression: exiv2 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.5 makes Gwenview crash when opening
  images exported by darktable

Status in Gwenview:
  Unknown
Status in exiv2 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in gwenview package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Since the recent security update of exiv2, Gwenview crashes when
  trying to open image files that got exported by darktable.

  Steps to reproduce:

  * Make a test installation of Kubuntu 21.04 in VirtualBox
  * Install all updates
  * Install darktable
  * Copy one of the images in /usr/share/wallpapers (or any other image) to
your home directory and open it with darktable
  * Within darktable, export a copy of the image (no need to do any actual
modifications)
  * Try to open that copy with Gwenview. Gwenview will crash.

  I'm attaching a crash report hinting that this is related to exiv2.

  Temporary workaround:
  If I downgrade libexiv2-27 to 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.4, Gwenview doesn't crash, so
it seems the crash is related to changes in 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.5.

  I don't know if the underlying cause is actually some bug in exiv2,

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1609750]

2021-09-27 Thread pierre-louis.bossart
if patching the PulseAudio default.pa works, then the initial issue was
probably a problem with alsa-ucm-conf not being updated in your distros.
There's no reason to use asound.state these days, it's a much better
idea to use UCM. my 2 cents.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1609750]

2021-09-27 Thread timo.jyrinki
I don't have problems running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with (original, non-HWE
kernel) 5.4 series kernel these days. Granted, I've probably indeed
modified the default.pa as indicated above, and have had a state file
which I've restored - but the kernel is default, and the audio works
fine without any manual state restores on every boot and I can switch
between internal and HDMI audio fine.

I've mostly used the HDMI audio though in recent years so I cannot say
if there would be problems with internal audio in prolonged use.

The reason for not upgrading beyond 5.4 kernel used to be that 5.8
kernel regressed with these low tier Intel graphics, but I recall that
was fixed in later ones so the current Ubuntu 20.04 HWE kernel (5.11)
that comes on eg 20.04.3 installation media might be worth trying again
if wanting excitement to life.

It'd be nice to experiment with out-of-the-box functionality too, which
would be likely easiest done with live USB sticks.

Overall, I think there might not be any kernel bug left here, only
userspace ones. Although it might have easily regressed in more recent
kernels given the low amount of users.

Bug description:
  Systemd upstream switched the default cgroup hierarchy to unified with
  v243. This change is reverted by the Ubuntu systemd packages, but as
  unified is the way to go per upstream support should be added to all
  relevant Ubuntu packges (and snaps):

  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/v243/NEWS#L56

  * systemd now defaults to the "unified" cgroup hierarchy setup during
build-time, i.e. -Ddefault-hierarchy=unified is now the build-time
default. Previously, -Ddefault-hierarchy=hybrid was the default.
This
change reflects the fact that cgroupsv2 support has matured
substantially in both systemd and in the kernel, and is clearly the
way forward. Downstream production distributions might want to
continue to use -Ddefault-hierarchy=hybrid (or even =legacy) for
their builds as unfortunately the popular container managers have
not
caught up with the kernel API changes.

  Systemd is rebuilt using the new default and is available from the following
PPA for testing:

  https://launchpad.net/~rbalint/+archive/ubuntu/systemd-unified-cgh

  The autopkgtest results against other packges are available here:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1944951] Re: delayed display update / konsole artifacts

Title:
  delayed display update / konsole artifacts

It took a few tries to get artifacts this
  pronounced, though; usually they only concern small parts of the
  terminal.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1944951] Re: delayed display update / konsole artifacts

2021-09-27 Thread andik
It looks that I'm struck by the same bug. For me all KDE applications
show display problems, not only just konsole. But konsole is the one
that's used most often.

After you have "fixed" you installation now, could you please turn off the
composite manager.
Just use Shift-Alt-F12 for that. I do not get any display errors here as long
as the composite manager runs.

Is the problem back without composite manager?

  We are planning to do SRU to systemd in focal, to avoid unwanted
  screen rotations on some Dell laptop models.

  [Impact]

   * This fixes unwanted rotations on certain Dell clamshell laptop
  models with accelerometer.

  [Test Plan]

   * On Dell laptops with model SKU 0A3E or 0E0E, install this package and
kernel 5.13, or kernel with this patch backported:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=e26f023e01ef26b4138bc1099af309bdc4523d23
   * Rotate the laptop and the display should not be rotated.

  [Where problems could occur]

   * This is to add parameters for certain models in hwdb, and does not
  affect any other part of systemd.

   * This fix would only take effect with kernel 5.13 or the above patch
  backported.

  [scope]

  this is needed for all releases

  this is being fixed upstream by
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/20314

  [Other info]

   * The patch mentioned above is going to have a separated SRU for
  linux-oem-5.10 and linux-hwe-5.11 (LP: #1938143)

  suspend-then-hibernate commit c58493c00af, and then fixed with larger
  changes in commit c8cd8ca3986.

  this is also present in b, by a backport of the functionality

  [other info]

  note that if hybrid-sleep is allowed/possible, then calling 'systemctl
  suspend-then-hibernate' does actually perform suspend-then-hibernate;
  this typo only controls what suspend action logind checks for support
  of, not what suspend action it actually performs.

  [original description]

  ```
  systemctl suspend-then-hibernate
  Failed to suspend system, hibernate later via logind: Sleep verb
"hybrid-sleep" not supported
  ```

  Note the verb change!

  [21.10 FEAT] RoCE: Predictable Interface Names - systemd part

Status in Ubuntu on IBM z Systems:
  Fix Committed

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  systemd-networkd is failing to acquire a DCHP6 lease from dnsmasq on
  armhf since glibc 2.34-0ubuntu1, failing systemd (tests-name=networkd-
  test.py) and netplan.io (test-name=ethernets) tests on armhf.

  Reproducer:
  * Setup an armhf container, e.g. via:
  autopkgtest systemd --test-name=networkd-test.py --shell -U
--apt-pocket=proposed=src:systemd,src:glibc -s -- lxd
autopkgtest/ubuntu/impish/armhf
  * It will fail and drop you into the shell
  * cd test/ && apt install python3-nose
  * nosetests3 -v -s -m "test_.*_dhcp_ip6" networkd-test.py

  This is unrelated to the recent dnsmasq changes (LP: #1894619), as that would
fail on all architectures, not just armhf.

  It still passes inside an amd64 LXD container, so it is also not related to
armhf being tested inside a container. But it shows the difference between
armhf vs amd64 container, that on armhf we're missing the DHCPSOLICIT (and
therefore DHCPREPLY) messages, as can be seen from the dnsmasq log:
  dnsmasq-dhcp[]: DHCPSOLICIT(router_eth42)
00:02:00:00:ab:11:57:1e:20:2f:9e:56:5f:34
  dnsmasq-dhcp[]: DHCPREPLY(router_eth42) 2600::1f
00:02:00:00:ab:11:57:1e:20:2f:9e:56:5f:34 autopkgtest-lxd-rtypaf

  The issue is most probably the same that causes the currently failing
  netplan.io/ethernets autopkgtest on armhf, if tested against glibc
  2.34-0ubuntu1.

 Assignee: (unassigned) => dann frazier (dannf)

** Description changed:

  [Impact]
  udev can produce unpredictable network interface names by default when
multiple devices map to the same slot due to an intermediate bridge. On an
Nvidia DGX2 system, I see the following when booting a system with udev
245.4-4ubuntu3.13:

  ubuntu@akis:~$ ls /sys/class/net
  enp134s0f0  enp6s0  ens103  ens107  eth3  eth9
  enp134s0f1  ens102  ens106  eth1eth7  lo

  For each ens* device, there is a sibling eth* device that maps to the
  same slot because both devices are behind the same bridge.

  Unpredictable names present well known problems, but I'll describe a
  specific issue I'm having. We currently do automated network testing
  that MAAS deploys a system and then configures 2 specific NICs on the
  system. While MAAS does take care to always restore the names used
  during commissioning (eth3 will always be the same NIC on every deploy),
  these names can change each time the system is commissioned. So today we
  need to go in and edit the NIC names manually in MAAS any time the
  system is re-commissioned.

+ [Test Case]
+ Boot with kernel option net.naming-scheme=v247; verify that all network
interfaces receive predictable names.
+
  [Fix]
  This issue was addressed upstream by adding a new v247 naming scheme that
detects this scenario and disables usage of slot-based names for these devices.
Obviously changing the default naming scheme in a released LTS series could
break users. However, we could introduce the v247 scheme in a focal SRU, and
keep the default scheme of v245 (via -Ddefault-net-naming-scheme=v245). Users
impacted by this could then opt-in to the v247 scheme by passing
net.naming-scheme=v247 or net.naming-scheme=latest on the kernel command line.
I could add this to DGX2 systems via a kernel_opts MAAS tag to always get
predictable names during commissioning.

  [Regression Risk]
  This would change the behavior of any users who select
net.naming-scheme=latest, since the latest will now be v247 and not v245. I'm
not sure why an existing Ubuntu user would be doing that though - AFAICT,
Ubuntu currently always defaults to the latest scheme.

net.naming-scheme=v247 or net.naming-scheme=latest on the kernel command line.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1945227] [NEW] drm/amdgpu: Add support for Yellow Carp

2021-09-27 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

New hardware support for AMD's Yellow Carp need five commits backported
to mesa and new firmware. This is only needed on focal, skipping
hirsute/impish (no kernel support there).

[Test plan]

Install updates, boot a YC machine and check that the desktop has full
hardware acceleration.

[Where problems could occur]

The firmware is new, so it will simply add new files to l-f without any
impact on others.

Mesa adds five commits in total, and while some affect other chips, they
mostly fix hw bugs or add a helper and such, hard to see what could go
wrong.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1945225] [NEW] udev produces unpredictable net names when PCI device is a bridge

2021-09-27 Thread dann frazier
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
udev can produce unpredictable network interface names by default when multiple
devices map to the same slot due to an intermediate bridge. On an Nvidia DGX2
system, I see the following when booting a system with udev 245.4-4ubuntu3.13:

ubuntu@akis:~$ ls /sys/class/net
enp134s0f0  enp6s0  ens103  ens107  eth3  eth9
enp134s0f1  ens102  ens106  eth1eth7  lo

For each ens* device, there is a sibling eth* device that maps to the
same slot because both devices are behind the same bridge.

Unpredictable names present well known problems, but I'll describe a
specific issue I'm having. We currently do automated network testing
that MAAS deploys a system and then configures 2 specific NICs on the
system. While MAAS does take care to always restore the names used
during commissioning (eth3 will always be the same NIC on every deploy),
these names can change each time the system is commissioned. So today we
need to go in and edit the NIC names manually in MAAS any time the
system is re-commissioned.

  To help you understand the issue, I've attached an archive containing two

Audacity is done recording one second of audio.

  *  Purging and reinstalling Audacity
  * Purging and reinstalling Pulseaudio following the guide on the Ubuntu Wiki
  * Running audacity with this command: Exec=env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  In Ubuntu Impish, an issue has been noted in regards to refreshing
  packages in Plasma Discover for upgrade or installation. An error
  appears upon initialization of the Discover interface:

  "cannot refresh whilst network offline"

  This will happen regardless of if a system is online or not.

  I identified a race condition in which this is occurring on systems
  where packagekitd is initialized before the network service is online.
  This was a relatively easy fix and required adding one line to the
  packagekit.service file:

  Wants=network-online.target

It's a
  decent safety net. https://github.com/PackageKit/PackageKit/pull/506

support for devlink-port in non-representors mode

  The impact is that your network can fail to come up after
  transitioning from the LTS kernel to the HWE kernel. Now, this isn't a
  huge problem for MAAS installs because MAAS configures netplan to
  always use the same names as were used at commissioning. It does
  impact subiquity based installs however, which do not.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1945205] [NEW] [FFe] Add zstd support

2021-09-27 Thread Athos Ribeiro
Public bug reported:

[Feature Freeze Exception]

Now that dpkg-deb defaults to compressing with zstd, python-debian can
no longer decompress the compressed data into the binary package archive
[1].

The proposed change, created as an MP at [2], introduces zstd support to
python-debian 0.1.39 by adding a dependency to zstd to the package and
by extending the python-debian xz support for python < 3.3, where xz was
still not supported by tarfile, to also support the zstd compression.

It is also important to note that, for python-debian 0.1.40, the
relevant (here patched) code was re-worked (python < 3.3 support was
dropped) and this proposed patch, along with the relevant proposed unit
test, will need to be re-written. This re-writing effort is already an
ongoing work proposed upstream in [3].

Once [3] is merged, this patch can be dropped and python-debian can be
sync'd from upstream again. If there is a need to merge python-debian
before [3] is accepted and released upstream, the next version of
python-debian will need to drop the proposed patch and apply [3]
instead, for the reasons listed above.

While python-debian is not completely broken without this FFe patch,
some of its features will not work properly on Ubuntu packages now they
are compressed with zstd. For instance, any packages or scripts that try
to use python-debian for extracting data from deb packages will no
longer work. Namely, dh-cmake FTBFS when trying to decompress a deb
package during its unit test run step [4].

A PPA with the proposed fix is available at [5], along with the build
logs.

I ran the dep8 test suite locally with the following results:

  autopkgtest [20:04:02]:  summary
  python3-debian PASS

I am also attaching the logs for installation, removal and upgrades of
the patched package.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1505670] Re: "uncaptured python exception"

2021-09-27 Thread Rolf Leggewie
@Miriam, actually, all that I've written has been mentioned before in
the bug ticket. Have you actually read the ticket? Why is it that
people who get paid by Canonical to work on Ubuntu can't even be
bothered to read the tickets where volunteers who don't get paid have
already done their work (you are not the first and not the second
employee where I noticed this)?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1945202] [NEW] Tar changes folder ownership when run under root

2021-09-27 Thread Zsolt Ero
Public bug reported:

I got locked out of my server via SSH, simply by extracting a tar file.
No matter how crazy it sounds, it is reproducible.

1. login as root
2. wget
https://github.com/aristocratos/btop/releases/download/v1.0.9/btop-1.0.9-linux-x86_64.tbz`
3. tar -xjvf btop-1.0.9-linux-x86_64.tbz`

At this point the /root folder has ownership of user:user (1000:1000)
and the root is locked out from SSH login. I had to fix the server via
KVM.

auth.log contained the following:
"Authentication refused: bad ownership or modes for directory /root"

This seems to be a bug in tar, as the above behaviour doesn't happen when
logged in under any non-root user.
With non-root users the directory does not change ownership.
With root user, no matter where I extract the tar file, the directory changes
ownership.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1505670] Re: "uncaptured python exception"

2021-09-27 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Thank, Miriam, for having a look. I only became aware of your response
now by accident.

I'm not sure I understand what you did and what your results were. It
appears that you got the issue of an "uncaptured python exception" at
least once "when you removed squid-deb-proxy"? I really don't know what
you mean there. Then you list the output of /usr/share/squid-deb-proxy-
client/apt-avahi-discover twice, unchanged, but apparently get an IPv4
result once and an IPv6 result on the next, identical invocation.

The problem with squid-deb-proxy is easy to trigger. All it needs is
two or more responses to the avahi discovery in your LAN. See the
initial report where it shows three different IP numbers. These days, I
believe an IPv4 and IPv6 response from the same server is actually
enough.

Frankly, we don't need more bug triage here, it's all been laid out
forever, we've had a working patch for years. The patch is as far as I
can tell correct in that it is not simply a workaround. I assume you
haven't looked at the code. What needs to be done here is for @mvo to
finally comment on whether or not this is the correct way to fix it or
reject the patch (and come up with an alternative patch).

Truth be told, the state of this bug is disgusting and demotivating.
Ubuntu used to be about making Debian polished and usable. How come we
dropped the ball so badly on this awesome USP?

  delayed display update / konsole artifacts

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

It took a few tries to get artifacts this
  pronounced, though; usually they only concern small parts of the
  terminal.

Title:
  Revert resolved-disable-event-sources-before-unreffing-them.patch

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix
Status in systemd source package in Focal:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  [impact]

  The initial patch for LP: #1934221 was not sufficient to fix the root
  cause of the segfault, but rather moved it to a slightly different
  location in the code (still inside the on_query_timeout handler).

  [test case]

  this bug is only to revert the previous patch

  For verification we should keep systemd-resolved running for a while and
observe that it does not crash, using the relevant configuration in addition to
being able to resolve DNS queries as expected, e.g.:
  ```
  root@ff-vm:~# cat /etc/systemd/resolved.conf
  [Resolve]
  DNS=46.182.19.48#dns2.digitalcourage.de 1.1.1.1#cloudflare-dns.com
9.9.9.9#dns.quad9.net
  DNSSEC=yes
  DNSOverTLS=opportunistic
  MulticastDNS=no
  LLMNR=no
  Cache=yes
  DNSStubListener=yes
  Domains=~.
  root@ff-vm:~# dmesg | grep segfault
  root@ff-vm:~# dmesg | grep "systemd-resolve"
  root@ff-vm:~# resolvectl query google.com
  google.com: 2a00:1450:4001:809::200e -- link: enp5s0
  172.217.18.110 -- link: enp5s0
  -- Information acquired via protocol DNS in 177.4ms.
  -- Data is authenticated: no
  ```

  [regression potential]

  Any regression could cause crashes in systemd-resolved, making it
  unresponsive to DNS network name requests to local applications.

  [other info]

  this only reverts the patch that was added for LP: #1934221, as this
  patch was detected to still produce (slightly different) segfaults in
  on_query_timeout
  (https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/c4e5be3f1c7af9483993c7e6007b9325ab5b78cd),
  similar to the original segfaults in on_query_timeout
  (https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/bb0ce4ff8e6ef86041cfb5647b792823a20b44f7)

  We want to revert the patch in Focal (systemd v245) for now, while we'll try
to fix the root cause in Hirsute (systemd v247), adding more relevant patches
that were added to systemd-stable v247 (but not systemd-stable v245):

https://github.com/systemd/systemd-stable/commits/v247-stable/src/resolve/resolved-dns-query.c

https://github.com/systemd/systemd-stable/commit/64317106aed94a6fb758ab6b08ba490873fc5227

https://github.com/systemd/systemd-stable/commit/91ba2eac4b6b463026b3a93e5a139923e8f2cfe4

https://github.com/systemd/systemd-stable/commit/ab9f7e1a51005f12d3bac83b86716d9d33048eb7

https://github.com/systemd/systemd-stable/commit/78a43c33c8847ebbc2d3cf530ebe304924c58b32

https://github.com/systemd/systemd-stable/commit/c8d7fab2286384b19ff6328cece107c4c02d7bb8

  => Root-causing this issue will be done in the (re-opened) LP:
  #1934221

it's a bluetooth device, and it's connected. The audio works as expected,
it's listed there as an output device and it works, but the microphone
isn't listed and doesn't work.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1917620] Re: failed to install libffi-dev package

2021-09-27 Thread Gianfranco Costamagna
Hello, xenial has version 3.2.1-4 and artful had 3.2.1-6.
Sadly, artful is EOL now, so no support is available for it anymore.
I would suggest you to upgrade to bionic or focal, the latest LTS available.

alternatively you can download manually the deb from there
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libffi/3.2.1-6/+build/10963483 and dpkg -i
it.

But moving to 20.04 or newer is really the best option I suggest.

  [Fix]

  Upstream commit 3d32f216 ("i915: Add ADL-P DMC Support").

  [Test Case]

  Verified on Intel ADL-M/ADL-P RVPs.

  [Where problems could occur]

  It's a new firmware for new GPU, not possible to introduce
  regressions.

  [Other Info]

  Impish has this already. And while ADL-P/M support begins since v5.14,
  only focal (for oem-5.14) is being nominated.

  =

  [SRU Justification:mesa,libdrm]

  NOTE: this is for focal only, hirsute/impish do not and will not have
  kernel support for this.

  [Impact]

  ADL-P machines need to use the native driver.

  [Fix]

  Backport support from upstream.

  libdrm: a single patch from 2.4.107
  mesa: three commits to add pci-id's and a workaround
  kernel: needs drm sync from 5.14 (bug 1940085) plus additional backports

  [Test case]
  Boot a machine and check that it's using the native driver and that the usual
workloads are fine.

  [Where things could go wrong]
  For older gpu's there's little to go wrong, since the commits are for ADL-P
only.

  There is a race in libx11 causing applications to randomly abort. It's
  not trivial to reproduce, but there are enough duplicates that this
  deserves an SRU to bionic & focal.

  [Fix]

  Backport a commit from upstream:

  From dbb55e1a5e82870466b095097d9e46046680ec25 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001
  From: Frediano Ziglio
  Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2020 09:06:54 +
  Subject: [PATCH] Fix poll_for_response race condition

  In poll_for_response is it possible that event replies are skipped
  and a more up to date message reply is returned.
  This will cause next poll_for_event call to fail aborting the program.

  This was proved using some slow ssh tunnel or using some program
  to slow down server replies (I used a combination of xtrace and strace).

  How the race happens:
  - program enters into poll_for_response;
  - poll_for_event is called but the server didn't still send the reply;
  - pending_requests is not NULL because we send a request (see call
to  append_pending_request in _XSend);
  - xcb_poll_for_reply64 is called from poll_for_response;
  - xcb_poll_for_reply64 will read from server, at this point
server reply with an event (say sequence N) and the reply to our
last request (say sequence N+1);
  - xcb_poll_for_reply64 returns the reply for the request we asked;
  - last_request_read is set to N+1 sequence in poll_for_response;
  - poll_for_response returns the response to the request;
  - poll_for_event is called (for instance from another poll_for_response);
  - event with sequence N is retrieved;
  - the N sequence is widen, however, as the "new" number computed from
last_request_read is less than N the number is widened to N + 2^32
(assuming last_request_read is still contained in 32 bit);
  - poll_for_event enters the nested if statement as req is NULL;
  - we compare the widen N (which now does not fit into 32 bit) with
request (which fits into 32 bit) hitting the throw_thread_fail_assert.

  To avoid the race condition and to avoid the sequence to go back
  I check again for new events after getting the response and
  return this last event if present saving the reply to return it
  later.

  To test the race and the fix it's helpful to add a delay (I used a
  "usleep(5000)") before calling xcb_poll_for_reply64.

  Original patch written by Frediano Ziglio, see
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libx11/-/merge_requests/34

  Reworked primarily for readability by Peter Hutterer, see
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libx11/-/merge_requests/53

  Signed-off-by: Peter Hutterer

  bionic needs another commit so that the real fix applies.

  [Test case]

  It's a race condition, the SRU sponsor (tjaalton) does not have a test
  case for this, but the bug subscribers seem to.

  [Where things could go wrong]

  In theory there might be a case where a race still happens, but since
  this has been upstream for a year now with no follow-up commits, it's
  safe to assume that there are no regressions.

  STEPS TO REPRODUCE
  ==
  The bug seems to occur when clicking on a file or folder. It is random and
difficult to provide clear steps to reproduce. It is, however, a common
situation.

  EXPECTED RESULTS

  pcmanfm works without problem.

  ACTUAL RESULTS
  ==
  All pcmanfm windows become unresponsive, though background processes (e.g.
copying) may continue without problem. with the same error message in
~/.cache/lxsession/LXDE/run.log:

  [xcb] Unknown sequence number while processing queue
  [xcb] Most likely this is a multi-threaded client and XInitThreads has not
been called
  [xcb] Aborting, sorry about that.
  pcmanfm: xcb_io.c:259: poll_for_event: Assertion
`!xcb_xlib_threads_sequence_lost' failed.
  ** Message: 19:58:49.267: app.vala:130: pcmanfm exit with this type of exit: 6
  ** Message: 19:58:49.268: app.vala:148: Exit not normal, try to reload

  (note the timestamp on the message will vary)

  AFFECTED VERSIONS
  =
  1.2.5-3ubuntu1
  NOT 1.2.4-1ubuntu0.1

  UPSTREAM BUG

  https://sourceforge.net/p/pcmanfm/bugs/1089/

  ADDITIONAL NOTES

  Other GTK2 file managers (e.g. Thunar) and applications (e.g. GIMP, Leafpad)
seem to have the same problems. This is probably at least rooted in a GTK2 bug:

  It's a new firmware for new GPU, not possible to introduce

  [Other Info]

  Impish has this already. And while ADL-P/M support begins since v5.14,
  only focal (for oem-5.14) is being nominated.

  [SRU Justification:mesa,libdrm]

  NOTE: this is for focal only, hirsute/impish do not and will not have

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1927255] Re: [USB-Audio - RODECaster Pro, playback] Sound is distorted (20.04)

2021-09-27 Thread Oliver Tacke
@all who commented: I am not sure if there's some threshold that needs
to be met before this issue gets more attention by someone who could
look into it, but I assume it helps if you confirm that this bug affects
you at the top of this page, so the "hotness" score rises.

Title:
  [USB-Audio - RODECaster Pro, playback] Sound is distorted (20.04)

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I got a Rodecaster Pro USB device that has been causing trouble before
  and already lead to quirk handling in the kernel for the sample rate,
  see

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/sound/usb/format.c?h=v5.8#n412

  The Rodecaster is running fine on my laptop, but on my desktop, only
  audio input is working. The audio output is distorted. It's played
  kind of very slowly. Interestingly, if the source is a video file, the
  video plays slower, e.g. YouTube in a browser. I have never seen
  anything like that before.

  I have tried to figure out what the cause might be and I think I have
  reached the end of where I can get to on my own. I have documented
  most things at https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2461568

  Putting my last step it in a nutshell: I have booted both my computers
  with a plain Ubuntu 21.04 from a pen drive (it uses kernel version
  5.11.0-16-generic) to make sure it's not some different configuration
  that I have set up over the years on my systems (both Ubuntu 20.04
  with kernel 5.8.18). I attached the Rodecaster. It runs fine on my
  laptop, but not on my desktop (used the output test from).

  I then detected the card number with

  aplay -l

  I killed pulseaudio with

  pulseaudio -k

  I then played the same sample (encoded in 48000 Hz in PCM signed 32
  bit little endian format) using

  aplay -f S32_LE -c 2 -r 48000 -D hw:x ~/sample.wav

  where x is the appropriate card number and the rest of the arguments
  meet the Rodecaster's narrow specification. It's playing fine on the
  laptop, but distorted on the desktop. As far as I understand using
  aplay this way without a plugin should send the file directly to the
  device, so I assume there's something on the way from aplay to the
  Rodecaster that's interfering (kernel or even some piece of hardware)
  - and that definitely is where my expertise ends (rather a little
  before :-)).

  I'll gladly contribute any information that could be useful and I will
  willingly help to debug this problem if it may be related to the
  kernel. If there's anything I can do, please let me know.

  Cheers,
  Oliver
