[Touch-packages] [Bug 1944951] Re: delayed display update / konsole artifacts
Yes! The artifacts reappear when I hit Shift-Alt-F12. Good catch! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1944951 Title: delayed display update / konsole artifacts Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Since one of the recent Impish updates, konsole shows artifacts and reacts slowly. In fact, it looks like screen updates are pipelined on pixel-group granularity somehow, and the pipeline isn't drained completely: When more text goes to the terminal (e.g., I type something), existing artifacts vanish, but new ones (in the new text) appear. Unfortunately, I don't see any of the previous konsole .deb releases (e.g. 4:21.08.1-1 or 4:21.08.0-1) on the Ubuntu mirrors, so I cannot go back and simply check whether the newest konsole updates are the culprit. I'm actually not sure whether konsole is responsible at all, I originally intended to file against xorg; however, I see those artifacts in neither xterm nor gnome-terminal. Find attached a screenshot (taken with an external camera; these artifacts cannot be recorded using a screenshot tool such as imagemagick's "import") where I ran "ls" in /tmp, and cleared the terminal with ^L afterwards. The screen is still littered with remains of the "ls" output. It took a few tries to get artifacts this pronounced, though; usually they only concern small parts of the terminal. However, for audio to play through the connected HDMI device, "Analog Output - Built-in Audio" must be selected instead. Unfortunately, this setting will be lost on subsequent boots. An error appears upon initialization of the Discover interface: "cannot refresh whilst network offline" This will happen regardless of if a system is online or not. I identified a race condition in which this is occurring on systems where packagekitd is initialized before the network service is online. This was a relatively easy fix and required adding one line to the packagekit.service file: Wants=network-online.target This ensures that packagekitd is not initialized prior to being online. If the 90 second deadline isn't met, then packagekitd will simply not start as a background process until the user connects to the network and initializes it via a graphical utility, such as with GNOME Software or Plasma Discover, both of which initialize packagekitd on a user level. The attached patch will easily apply the fix via normal Debian packaging methods. [Test Plan] * Install Kubuntu or Ubuntu Studio * While connected to network, Run Discover * Discover will complain about "cannot refresh whilst offline", which is being communicated from PackageKit. All functionality in Discover is hindered from this point forward. This is due to a hung packagekitd process which sees the network offline, even though this is false. [Where problems could occur] * packagekitd's systemd service will time-out after 90 seconds if systemd finds no network, which means any update notifications will not automatically start until packagekitd is manually started. Luckily, Discover and GNOME Software both attempt to start packagekitd for the user when run. I'd consider this to be expected behavior for an offline system. The fix is mostly to prevent the false-negative of the system being offline when it's really not. [Other Info] * This fix has been accepted upstream by the PackageKit maintainers as a sane workaround for when gio misbehaves or otherwise. It's a decent safety net. https://github.com/PackageKit/PackageKit/pull/506 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 21.10 Package: packagekit 1.2.2-2ubuntu1 [modified: lib/systemd/system/packagekit.service] ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.13.0-14.14-lowlatency 5.13.1 Uname: Linux 5.13.0-14-lowlatency x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: zfs zunicode zavl icp zcommon znvpair nvidia_modeset nvidia ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu68 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: unknown CurrentDesktop: KDE Date: Thu Sep 9 16:34:12 2021 InstallationDate: Installed on 2021-03-20 (172 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu-Studio 21.04 "Hirsute Hippo" - Alpha amd64 (20210320) SourcePackage: packagekit UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to impish on 2021-06-13 (88 days ago) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/packagekit/+bug/1943189/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages Post to : touch-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1609750]
I don't have problems running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with (original, non-HWE kernel) 5.4 series kernel these days. Granted, I've probably indeed modified the default.pa as indicated above, and have had a state file which I've restored - but the kernel is default, and the audio works fine without any manual state restores on every boot and I can switch between internal and HDMI audio fine. I've mostly used the HDMI audio though in recent years so I cannot say if there would be problems with internal audio in prolonged use. The reason for not upgrading beyond 5.4 kernel used to be that 5.8 kernel regressed with these low tier Intel graphics, but I recall that was fixed in later ones so the current Ubuntu 20.04 HWE kernel (5.11) that comes on eg 20.04.3 installation media might be worth trying again if wanting excitement to life. It'd be nice to experiment with out-of-the-box functionality too, which would be likely easiest done with live USB sticks. Overall, I think there might not be any kernel bug left here, only userspace ones. Although it might have easily regressed in more recent kernels given the low amount of users. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1609750 Title: Audio not working on Acer Chromebook R11 Status in linux: Confirmed Status in linux package in Ubuntu: In Progress Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Audio is not working at all on Acer Chromebook R11 (codename CYAN). This change is reverted by the Ubuntu systemd packages, but as unified is the way to go per upstream support should be added to all relevant Ubuntu packges (and snaps): https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/v243/NEWS#L56 * systemd now defaults to the "unified" cgroup hierarchy setup during build-time, i.e. -Ddefault-hierarchy=unified is now the build-time default. Previously, -Ddefault-hierarchy=hybrid was the default. This change reflects the fact that cgroupsv2 support has matured substantially in both systemd and in the kernel, and is clearly the way forward. Downstream production distributions might want to continue to use -Ddefault-hierarchy=hybrid (or even =legacy) for their builds as unfortunately the popular container managers have not caught up with the kernel API changes. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1944951] Re: delayed display update / konsole artifacts
It looks that I'm struck by the same bug. For me all KDE applications show display problems, not only just konsole. But konsole is the one that's used most often. After you have "fixed" you installation now, could you please turn off the composite manager. Just use Shift-Alt-F12 for that. I do not get any display errors here as long as the composite manager runs. Systemd is rebuilt using the new default and is available from the following PPA for testing: https://launchpad.net/~rbalint/+archive/ubuntu/systemd-unified-cgh The autopkgtest results against other packges are available here: https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac/autopkgtest- eoan-rbalint-systemd-unified-cgh/?format=plain https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac/autopkgtest- focal-rbalint-systemd-unified-cgh/?format=plain lxc autopkgtest failing: https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac/autopkgtest- eoan-rbalint-systemd-unified- cgh/eoan/amd64/d/docker.io/20191030_155944_2331e@/log.gz snapd autopkgtest failing: https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac/autopkgtest- eoan-rbalint-systemd-unified- cgh/eoan/amd64/s/snapd/20191030_161354_94b26@/log.gz docker.io autopkgtest failing: https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac/autopkgtest- eoan-rbalint-systemd-unified- cgh/eoan/amd64/d/docker.io/20191030_155944_2331e@/log.gz To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/lxc/+bug/1850667/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages Post to : touch-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Reproducer: * Setup an armhf container, e.g. via: autopkgtest systemd --test-name=networkd-test.py --shell -U --apt-pocket=proposed=src:systemd,src:glibc -s -- lxd autopkgtest/ubuntu/impish/armhf * It will fail and drop you into the shell * cd test/ && apt install python3-nose * nosetests3 -v -s -m "test_.*_dhcp_ip6" networkd-test.py This is unrelated to the recent dnsmasq changes (LP: #1894619), as that would fail on all architectures, not just armhf. It still passes inside an amd64 LXD container, so it is also not related to armhf being tested inside a container. But it shows the difference between armhf vs amd64 container, that on armhf we're missing the DHCPSOLICIT (and therefore DHCPREPLY) messages, as can be seen from the dnsmasq log: dnsmasq-dhcp[]: DHCPSOLICIT(router_eth42) 00:02:00:00:ab:11:57:1e:20:2f:9e:56:5f:34 dnsmasq-dhcp[]: DHCPREPLY(router_eth42) 2600::1f 00:02:00:00:ab:11:57:1e:20:2f:9e:56:5f:34 autopkgtest-lxd-rtypaf The issue is most probably the same that causes the currently failing netplan.io/ethernets autopkgtest on armhf, if tested against glibc 2.34-0ubuntu1. On an Nvidia DGX2 system, I see the following when booting a system with udev 245.4-4ubuntu3.13: ubuntu@akis:~$ ls /sys/class/net enp134s0f0 enp6s0 ens103 ens107 eth3 eth9 enp134s0f1 ens102 ens106 eth1eth7 lo For each ens* device, there is a sibling eth* device that maps to the same slot because both devices are behind the same bridge. ** Changed in: packagekit (Ubuntu Impish) Status: In Progress => Fix Committed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to packagekit in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1943189 Title: "cannot refresh whilst network offline" bug Status in packagekit package in Ubuntu: Fix Committed Status in packagekit source package in Focal: Confirmed Status in packagekit source package in Hirsute: Confirmed Status in packagekit source package in Impish: Fix Committed Bug description: [Impact] In Ubuntu Impish, an issue has been noted in regards to refreshing packages in Plasma Discover for upgrade or installation.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1945205] [NEW] [FFe] Add zstd support
Public bug reported: [Feature Freeze Exception] Now that dpkg-deb defaults to compressing with zstd, python-debian can no longer decompress the compressed data into the binary package archive [1]. The proposed change, created as an MP at [2], introduces zstd support to python-debian 0.1.39 by adding a dependency to zstd to the package and by extending the python-debian xz support for python < 3.3, where xz was still not supported by tarfile, to also support the zstd compression. It is also important to note that, for python-debian 0.1.40, the relevant (here patched) code was re-worked (python < 3.3 support was dropped) and this proposed patch, along with the relevant proposed unit test, will need to be re-written. This re-writing effort is already an ongoing work proposed upstream in [3]. Once [3] is merged, this patch can be dropped and python-debian can be sync'd from upstream again. If there is a need to merge python-debian before [3] is accepted and released upstream, the next version of python-debian will need to drop the proposed patch and apply [3] instead, for the reasons listed above. While python-debian is not completely broken without this FFe patch, some of its features will not work properly on Ubuntu packages now they are compressed with zstd. For instance, any packages or scripts that try to use python-debian for extracting data from deb packages will no longer work. Namely, dh-cmake FTBFS when trying to decompress a deb package during its unit test run step [4]. A PPA with the proposed fix is available at [5], along with the build logs. I ran the dep8 test suite locally with the following results: autopkgtest [20:04:02]: summary python3-debian PASS I am also attaching the logs for installation, removal and upgrades of the patched package. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1505670] Re: "uncaptured python exception"
Thank, Miriam, for having a look. I only became aware of your response now by accident. I'm not sure I understand what you did and what your results were. It appears that you got the issue of an "uncaptured python exception" at least once "when you removed squid-deb-proxy"? I really don't know what you mean there. Then you list the output of /usr/share/squid-deb-proxy- client/apt-avahi-discover twice, unchanged, but apparently get an IPv4 result once and an IPv6 result on the next, identical invocation. The problem with squid-deb-proxy is easy to trigger. All it needs is two or more responses to the avahi discovery in your LAN. See the initial report where it shows three different IP numbers. These days, I believe an IPv4 and IPv6 response from the same server is actually enough. Frankly, we don't need more bug triage here, it's all been laid out forever, we've had a working patch for years. The patch is as far as I can tell correct in that it is not simply a workaround. I assume you haven't looked at the code. What needs to be done here is for @mvo to finally comment on whether or not this is the correct way to fix it or reject the patch (and come up with an alternative patch). Truth be told, the state of this bug is disgusting and demotivating. Ubuntu used to be about making Debian polished and usable. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1917620] Re: failed to install libffi-dev package
Hello, xenial has version 3.2.1-4 and artful had 3.2.1-6. Sadly, artful is EOL now, so no support is available for it anymore. I would suggest you to upgrade to bionic or focal, the latest LTS available. alternatively you can download manually the deb from there https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libffi/3.2.1-6/+build/10963483 and dpkg -i it. But moving to 20.04 or newer is really the best option I suggest. ** Changed in: libffi (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to libffi in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1917620 Title: failed to install libffi-dev package Status in libffi package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Hi there, I'm trying to install libffi-dev and receiving this error [1]: libffi-dev : Depends: libffi6 (= 3.2.1-4) but 3.2.1-6 is to be installed However, my system already had the libff6=3.2.1-6 [2,3]. It's not trivial to reproduce, but there are enough duplicates that this deserves an SRU to bionic & focal. [Fix] Backport a commit from upstream: From dbb55e1a5e82870466b095097d9e46046680ec25 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Frediano Ziglio Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2020 09:06:54 + Subject: [PATCH] Fix poll_for_response race condition In poll_for_response is it possible that event replies are skipped and a more up to date message reply is returned. This will cause next poll_for_event call to fail aborting the program. This was proved using some slow ssh tunnel or using some program to slow down server replies (I used a combination of xtrace and strace). How the race happens: - program enters into poll_for_response; - poll_for_event is called but the server didn't still send the reply; - pending_requests is not NULL because we send a request (see call to append_pending_request in _XSend); - xcb_poll_for_reply64 is called from poll_for_response; - xcb_poll_for_reply64 will read from server, at this point server reply with an event (say sequence N) and the reply to our last request (say sequence N+1); - xcb_poll_for_reply64 returns the reply for the request we asked; - last_request_read is set to N+1 sequence in poll_for_response; - poll_for_response returns the response to the request; - poll_for_event is called (for instance from another poll_for_response); - event with sequence N is retrieved; - the N sequence is widen, however, as the "new" number computed from last_request_read is less than N the number is widened to N + 2^32 (assuming last_request_read is still contained in 32 bit); - poll_for_event enters the nested if statement as req is NULL; - we compare the widen N (which now does not fit into 32 bit) with request (which fits into 32 bit) hitting the throw_thread_fail_assert. To avoid the race condition and to avoid the sequence to go back I check again for new events after getting the response and return this last event if present saving the reply to return it later. To test the race and the fix it's helpful to add a delay (I used a "usleep(5000)") before calling xcb_poll_for_reply64. Original patch written by Frediano Ziglio, see https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libx11/-/merge_requests/34 Reworked primarily for readability by Peter Hutterer, see https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libx11/-/merge_requests/53 Signed-off-by: Peter Hutterer bionic needs another commit so that the real fix applies. [Test case] It's a race condition, the SRU sponsor (tjaalton) does not have a test case for this, but the bug subscribers seem to. [Where things could go wrong] In theory there might be a case where a race still happens, but since this has been upstream for a year now with no follow-up commits, it's safe to assume that there are no regressions. -- STEPS TO REPRODUCE == The bug seems to occur when clicking on a file or folder. It is random and difficult to provide clear steps to reproduce. It is, however, a common situation. EXPECTED RESULTS pcmanfm works without problem. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1927255] Re: [USB-Audio - RODECaster Pro, playback] Sound is distorted (20.04)
@all who commented: I am not sure if there's some threshold that needs to be met before this issue gets more attention by someone who could look into it, but I assume it helps if you confirm that this bug affects you at the top of this page, so the "hotness" score rises. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1927255 Title: [USB-Audio - RODECaster Pro, playback] Sound is distorted (20.04) Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I got a Rodecaster Pro USB device that has been causing trouble before and already lead to quirk handling in the kernel for the sample rate, see https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/sound/usb/format.c?h=v5.8#n412 The Rodecaster is running fine on my laptop, but on my desktop, only audio input is working. The audio output is distorted. It's played kind of very slowly. Interestingly, if the source is a video file, the video plays slower, e.g. YouTube in a browser. I have never seen anything like that before. I have tried to figure out what the cause might be and I think I have reached the end of where I can get to on my own. I have documented most things at https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2461568 Putting my last step it in a nutshell: I have booted both my computers with a plain Ubuntu 21.04 from a pen drive (it uses kernel version 5.11.0-16-generic) to make sure it's not some different configuration that I have set up over the years on my systems (both Ubuntu 20.04 with kernel 5.8.18). I attached the Rodecaster. It runs fine on my laptop, but not on my desktop (used the output test from). I then detected the card number with aplay -l I killed pulseaudio with pulseaudio -k I then played the same sample (encoded in 48000 Hz in PCM signed 32 bit little endian format) using aplay -f S32_LE -c 2 -r 48000 -D hw:x ~/sample.wav where x is the appropriate card number and the rest of the arguments meet the Rodecaster's narrow specification. It's playing fine on the laptop, but distorted on the desktop. As far as I understand using aplay this way without a plugin should send the file directly to the device, so I assume there's something on the way from aplay to the Rodecaster that's interfering (kernel or even some piece of hardware) - and that definitely is where my expertise ends (rather a little before :-)). I'll gladly contribute any information that could be useful and I will willingly help to debug this problem if it may be related to the kernel. If there's anything I can do, please let me know.
