  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Press the Super key and the L key
  2. Release both of these keys as soon as possible (duration between step 1
and 2 has to be under 250ms)

  Current Result:

  The dash shows up.

  Expected Result:

  Nothing happens.

Note: if you choose a key that is supposed to show a particular lens,
for example the A key, then it's even worse: the dash shows up and
  immediately disappears

Bug description:
When the dash is opened Unity now draws the indicators using a white
mask (revision 1562 [1]). This is nice, but it doesn't work well for
some more complex indicators (such as the keyboard layout indicator)
and it cause not to notify the icon change to an active icon (i.e. no
  blue envelope is shown!).

See the screenshot for more informations. Also if you make the
indicator-messaging menu to activate the envelope will stay white.

I've a fix for this in progress, but it also causes as side-effect that a
selected indicator won't be colored using the panel default color, but it will
be "more white" too. I honestly prefer this behavior, but I need some feedback.
Also I need to improve it for clear themes.
This is how it is rendered: http://twitpic.com/6obdpl

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1286910] Re: Lock screen uses last active window's language instead of default keyboard language

so it doesn't seem to always happen every time, but it does happen.

Bug description:
Lock screen (gnome-screensaver) uses last active window's language
(keyboard layout) instead of default keyboard language.

  Steps to reproduce this bug:
  1. In the system Text Entry settings:
1a. add two or more languages to the input sources list, e.g. English (as
first and default) and Russian (as second);
1b. Set hotkeys to switch sources (e.g. Ctrl+Shift or CapsLock).
1c. Select "Allow different sources for each window" radio button.
1d. Select "New windows use the default source" radio button.
  2. Run any application (e.g. gedit) and switch keyboard to second input
language (Russian).
  3. Lock the screen (Ctrl+Alt+L) or just wait idle time.
  4. See what language set by default for password input in the lock screen.

Expected: lock screen uses first input language (English) by default.
What happened instead: lock screen uses last active window's language
(Russian).

Ubuntu versions affected: Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 14.04 (daily builds)
  gnome-screensaver versions: 3.6.1-0ubuntu7, 3.6.1-0ubuntu9

I thought I must just be missing wherever the option lives so I read

Unity spread "randomly" shuffles overlapping windows

Status in Unity:

Status in unity package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
When the spread is used to display multiple windows of the same
application, Unity will randomly order those windows if they overlap.

This is annoying when trying to locate one window from a group of very
similar windows, eg terminal windows. Since they all look the same in
the spread I have to check each one in turn. But because Unity
shuffles them around, it is impossible to tell which ones I have
  already checked.

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. open the Unity 2D dashboard or click on the 'Applications' or 'Files &
Folders' lenses.
  2. if your native screen resolution is 1280x800 the views do not open full
screen. (this may be by design. please read further)
  3. click on the icon in the bottom right hand corner to force the view to
full screen.
  4. close the view (clicking the ubuntu logo in the top left hand corner will
accomplish this)
  5. repeat step 1. the views have returned to their default state (not full
screen)

  Expected behavior:
When I tell Unity 2D that I prefer the dashboard or lens views to display
full screen (by clicking the icon in the bottom right hand corner) I expect
that subsequent visits to those same views maintain that preference in the same
way that Unity 2D honors both the 'Shortcuts' (on the dashboard) and 'Refine
Search' ( 'Applications' or 'Files & Folders' lenses) options when they are
re-opened. Why is the full screen behavior different than the others? It
shouldn't be. It's EXTREMELY frustrating to have to force Unity 2D to take
advantage of ALL my screen real-estate EVERY single time when I use the views.

  Proposed (recommended) solution:
Have Unity 2D store the full screen state of the dashboard or lense view when
it's closed. The next time the user opens the view Unity 2D can check the
previous state and restore it instead of resetting to it's default. This could
be accomplished as easily as checking a key like "dash_fullscreen = 1". Similar
to the other options mentioned above this preference should last the entire
session until I log out.

  Proposed (long term) solution:
A native Unity 2D (user configurable) settings page with a checkbox for full
screen preference. If this solution is chosen it should persist permanently and
the preference restored among multiple sessions as well as reboots.

This bug is fixed in unity-3d since ubuntu 11.04.
It still exists in unity-2d and will never be fixed as unity-2d is no longer
supported since ubuntu 12.10 (see comment #343).

  *

This should mostly be fixed for Natty and might get backported to
  earlier releases as well.

For Precise (12.04) this is again broken for unity-2d (as of 17.7.2012
unity-2d 5.12.0-0ubuntu1.1).
Note that if the window has a scrollbar, you can grab that to resize the
window. If not, you are stuck with the 1px border. Workaround: NONE KNOWN (see
comment 320)?

  *

  *Blueprint for Natty, Ubuntu 11.04:

  https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection-
  dx-n-resizing-windows

  Work items1 * Make sure the new resize grip fits in current applications;
doesn't interfere with anything. We should make some noise about this during
the Natty cycle so people keep their eyes open and file bugs.
2 * Invisible window resize area - around 3px invisible area to allow resize
on all sides.

  *

Working grip backported to gtk2 already available in ppa :
  https://launchpad.net/~bratsche/+archive/gtk

  *

  Workaround for Compiz/Unity: Alt+Middlemousebutton resizes a window
  most comfortably.

  Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-
theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as
  desired:

  Binary package hint: metacity

  - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens
for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted
by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in
Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in
all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have
open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The
result is that I get a lot of "misses" when I try to drag a window
border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window
altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an
"invisible" region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick
that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or
perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System >
Preferences > Windows dialog (although the default thickness should
still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have
a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application
controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity
  team).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1155598] Re: autohide launcher can be stuck hidden

2015-09-18 Thread Seth Johnson
I was able to reproduce this on the latest version of Ubuntu (15.10) by
dragging a hyperlink from the browser to the edge of the screen, and
then letting it go (it doesn't matter where). The launcher will then not
reveal until (or equivalent) is pressed. This isn't the only way
to reproduce this, but it is the only one I have pinned down.

able to drag much over the launcher anymore (as George suggested might

[Touch-packages] [Bug 967039] Re: Automatic launcher color is ugly - contrasts with the wallpaper too much

2015-09-18 Thread Seth Johnson
I cannot reproduce this on the latest version of Ubuntu (15.10). Using a
mostly black wallpaper and Unity changes its colour to a dark blue/black
that looks just fine.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. We have tried to
recreate this on the latest release of Ubuntu and cannot reproduce it.
This bug is being marked as Invalid. If you believe the problem to still
exist in the latest version of Ubuntu please comment on why that is the
case and change the bug status to NEW.

After i logged into Unity I experienced a really disturbing recolor of
the Launcher and the Dash. I currently have a very dark Wallpaper on
my Desktop and the color that Unity chooses for the Launcher and Dash
does not seem to look right.

  reproduce this with:

  1) choose a rather dark wallpaper
  2) open some programms with bright background like nautilus or libreoffice to
get a better effect on the dash
  3) open the dash

It doesnt work with all dark wallpapers i

The color in the launcher is permanent and it feels like its coloring
parts that were not supposed to be colored solid. It looks much like
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/824886 but I submitted a new one
because the old bug was allready fixed in 2011.

It looks great on most wallpapers but really weird on mine. So I think
to solve this issue the effect should be made optional and be added to
the system settings if it is not a bug.

Bug description:
The keyboard shortcuts for opening the Unity dash to a specific lens
should be customizable in System Settings>Keyboard>Shortcuts. This is
useful for tweakers or for those who just want to see a list of what
keyboard shortcuts are available (*discoverability*) [1]. Also, as we
get more and more custom lenses, it's nearly unavoidable that multiple
third-party lenses will try to use the same shortcut; the user should
be able to manually fix that if desired.

[1] Yes, there's the keyboard shortcut overlay but there won't be
enough room for all shortcuts to be listed. Also, currently the
overlay doesn't do high contrast so the System Settings view would be
better for those who need high contrast.

What we don't want is people needing to edit system files and have
those changes lost whenever there are updates to that Unity lens.
  http://www.iloveubuntu.net/how-easily-add-preferred-keyboard-
  shortcuts-unity-lenses

This can be done by adding the appropriate .xml to /usr/share/gnome-
control-center/keybindings/ GNOME Shell puts their extra shortcuts
(like 'Show the Message Tray') in the System category. And then the
Unity lens specification would need to be updated so that developers
use that method for keyboard shortcuts instead of the
  /usr/share/unity/lenses Shortcut= syntax.

window using Alt-tab, Ubuntu freezes (crashes) and an internal error
is generated. It seems to be related to Compiz but I'm not sure. An
error report was generated and sent.

  Description: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (64-bit)
  Release: 14.04
  unity-tweak-tool 0.0.6ubuntu1

I expected the window would "roll up" and I'd be left with the
window's top bar like with previous versions of Ubuntu.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1201679] Re: ibus' Super+Space shortcut (usually) doesn't work

2015-09-16 Thread Seth Johnson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. We have tried to
recreate this on the latest release of Ubuntu (15.04 and 15.10) and
cannot reproduce it. This bug is being marked as Invalid. If you believe
the problem to still exist in the latest version of Ubuntu please
comment on why that is the case and change the bug status to NEW.

  2. Open System Settings>Region & Language
  3. Switch to the Text Entry tab.
  4. Click the + button to add at least two more keyboard layouts.
  5. Log out and log back in.
  6. Try to use the (new) default Super+Space keyboard shortcut to switch
between keyboard layouts.

  What happens
  ---
Usually, Super+Space is ignored. It worked for me once on login but every
other time I tested it didn't work.
It works fine in GNOME Shell but not in Unity.

  gsettings reset org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys
switch-input-source
seems to be enough to nudge Unity into respecting the Super+Space keyboard
shortcut.

My guess is that Unity is too aggressive in binding the Super key to
  itself.

  Workaround
  -
Shift+Super+Space, the keyboard shortcut to switch backward between keyboard
layouts works.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 970038] Re: Launcher do not want to appear

2015-09-16 Thread Seth Johnson
As part of the big bug review for 16.04 LTS I have tested this on 15.10
using the steps provided in the comment above and the bug is still
there.

A good workaround is to simply press the for for a second. You
can then grab the launcher's focus as before.

Title:
Should display the StickyKeys status in some way (a11y)

Status in Unity:
  Confirmed
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: indicator-application

Following an upgrade to Natty, I can no longer determine what state my
stickykeys are in. No special steps are needed to reproduce this
issue, just being in a Unity session.

Previously this information was provided by the gnome-panel-applet
called "AccessX Status" which displayed a row of icons which would
show either latched or locked for each modifier key. In GNOME 2.x, I
would right click a panel, select "Add to Panel" and choose "Keyboard
  Accessibility Status"

This would give me a line of 6 square icons representing Alt, Ctrl,
Super etc. These icons change state depending on which keys are being
(temporarily or permanently) locked by stickykeys.

While stickykeys seems to work - in that keys are latched/locked as
one would expect - the lack of information about their state renders
the feature considerably less usable. For some users, myself
included, this is a critical a11y failure and requires using the GNOME
  2.x environment instead of Unity.

This is now the third time I've reported this bug/problem, hopefully
I've got it in the right place this time! Apologies if not, and
please do let me know where I should be reporting this if not here.

How to fix it once it happens:
A)type something and either hit escape or delete what you have typed.
B)Check "application" in filters in the Dash (it gets unchecked)

  Expected results:
Compose sends nothing (as it happens when HUD is disabled)

  Actual results:
Widget loses focus for a fraction of the second.

  Impact:
This is most noticeable in the web pages that make use of 'blur' event

leaves the field, thus making it impossible to properly change the title of the
picture.

I think the focus is given to the modal dialog, so when this is closed, the
focus returns to the previous owner, that is Firefox in this case. Instead it
should be given to the window currently on the screen (infact sometimes I close
an application while I think I'm closing another one).

I think this happens only with modal dialogs, but I'm unsure.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 971018] Re: Auto-hide Unity Launcher will not reveal when mouse pushed to left side in VirtualBox or VMware

2015-09-16 Thread Seth Johnson
This isn't really a bug in Unity. If you turn off mouse pointer
integration (under the "Machine" menu) to prevent the host from stealing
the focus everything works like a charm. This means that with pointer
integration enabled and auto hide turned on when the mouse reaches the
edge of the screen Vbox/VMWare decide to give focus to the host, not the
guest. There isn't really much Unity can do about that.

As a workaround you can use: Don't hide the launcher, disable mouse
pointer integration, use to access the launcher, or +.

Title:
Dash displays "nothing that matches your search" before beginning a
  search

Status in Unity:
  New
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The Dash currently displays "Sorry, there is nothing that matches your
search" before the user has entered a query. A screenshot of this is
attached. This negative feedback conveys the inaccurate impression
that the user's search has failed. Instead, it would seem to me more
appropriate to initially present either a blank slate or a message
with a more neutral tone, such as "Results will appear here."

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1490170] Re: Dash displays "nothing that matches your search" before beginning a search

2015-09-15 Thread Seth Johnson
Steps to reproduce: Under System Settings -> Privacy disable file and
application recording and clear all usage data (in the "Files and
Application" tab) and disable online dash results from the "Search"
tab.

The dash will now claim there is nothing to match your unprovided
"search".

Title:
Menus refusing to close when clicking on their icon in panel often

Status in Unity:
  Invalid
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
After upgrading to Ubuntu 15.04, I am noticing that a lot of the time,
in the Unity panel, if I click on an icon, if I then click on it
several times again (at least 4 times, sometimes less or more), at
some point, when I then click on the icon, the menu refuses to close,
and either forces me to select an option, or just click off the menu.
Sometimes all it needs is one click, and the menu won't close the way
it normally does, and the way it was opened. Although I can then
change to another menu, that one also won't close, this is the same
with all items along the Unity panel at any time, including the option
  menus for different applications.
