This remains a potential security issue with Ubuntu 14.04.
It appears that the util-linux (2.25-5) should set the login shell as
nologin. It seems here we need an update which finds the shells
already set as /bin/sh and resets them to nlogin

This is addressed here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/70599/how-to-
change-tooltip-background-color-in-unity
In short, a workaround (until this is fixed) involves:
1. install unity-tweak-tool: sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool
2. run the tool, and modify the theme to something else
A better workaround than manually modifying files in /usr/share/themes
is to install and use the gnome-color-chooser tool. See the askubuntu
link in comment #3 for details.

I am experiencing the same problem on a Dell Inspiron 6400 with an Intel
GM945 display controller. Symptoms occur frequently when using
chromium-browser. Forcing AccelMethod to UXA resolved the symptoms.
I'm using Ubuntu 14.04, kernel 3.13.0-32-generic, and xserver-xorg-

I just installed nvidia 340.24 (and several other updates) through ppa
:xorg-edgers/ppa, and so far, no problems for the past hour.
Hoping this will end up being a valid workaround, as this update was
driving me crazy.
