[Touch-packages] [Bug 1891657] Re: systemd 100% cpu usage apport-autoreport.service: Failed with result 'start-limit-hit'
@Brian M: As you suggest that my or my problem reported likely by Dan van Vugt with my install of Ubuntu-MATE 20.10 had this similar problem of long strings of "Failed to start " items in the TTY and very long boot times . . . wasn't exactly "fixed" by trashing the /var/crash directory as he suggested there . . . . Then he said, "if that doesn't fix it you should do a fresh install" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/1893952 I'll have to read through some of the suggestions here when I have more time to spend on it. As mentioned in my bug report, I also have a Lubuntu 20.10 and that doesn't have these issues with long boot times. In my U-MATE edition when the GUI log in window finally loads there is like a "clang-a-lang" error sound . . . unique to that one install out of maybe 6 linux installs I have on "bare metal" . . . . -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to systemd in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1891657 Title: systemd 100% cpu usage apport-autoreport.service: Failed with result 'start-limit-hit' Status in apport package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in systemd package in Ubuntu: In Progress Status in apport source package in Groovy: Fix Released Status in systemd source package in Groovy: In Progress Bug description: after upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04 to 20.10 seeing systemd use 100% cpu forever top top - 10:16:19 up 20 min, 1 user, load average: 3.91, 4.28, 3.39 Tasks: 332 total, 2 running, 330 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie %Cpu(s): 18.7 us, 6.4 sy, 11.9 ni, 62.2 id, 0.0 wa, 0.0 hi, 0.8 si, 0.0 st MiB Mem : 15917.6 total, 8553.4 free, 2604.3 used, 4759.9 buff/cache MiB Swap: 2048.0 total, 2048.0 free, 0.0 used. 12633.7 avail Mem PID USER PR NIVIRTRESSHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 1 root 20 0 177316 12252 8684 R 100.0 0.1 15:01.25 systemd 4636 kush 39 19 633796 176152 16360 S 98.3 1.1 17:51.56 tracker-miner-f 820 message+ 20 0 10740 6452 4212 S 39.8 0.0 6:19.06 dbus-daemon 316 root 19 -1 535916 322896 320824 S 15.3 2.0 3:16.41 systemd-journal 844 syslog20 0 221136 5840 3920 S 13.6 0.0 2:14.52 rsyslogd 858 root 20 0 83708 74124 7568 S 12.7 0.5 2:06.98 systemd-logind 5 root 20 0 0 0 0 I 3.4 0.0 0:05.01 kworker/0:0-events 35566 kush 20 0 3850088 588344 262192 S 2.5 3.6 0:30.48 MainThread 5626 kush 20 0 5004788 260876 93400 S 1.7 1.6 3:05.19 gnome-shell 7033 kush 20 0 869792 66440 44272 S 1.7 0.4 0:06.05 gnome-terminal- 36790 kush 20 0 2525432 156636 98568 S 1.7 1.0 0:04.99 Web Content 957 root 20 0 1556196 45044 24284 S 0.8 0.3 0:02.48 containerd 1038 root 20 0 10460 4412 3300 S 0.8 0.0 0:00.16 fancontrol sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/syslog Aug 14 10:14:17 lhotse systemd[1]: Failed to start Process error reports when automatic reporting is enabled. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1893952] Re: Repeated apport failures causing long boot delays
@Daniel: Thanks again for those commands . . . I didn't know if removing the whole crash directory was the way to remove those files . . . . So I ran that command, then I did the "apt update" . . . but then I ran "apt -f install" . . . and that showed a bunch of things to add and subtract . . . so I ran that through and then I did your "apt full- upgrade" . . . and then "sudo reboot" . . . and reboot took it's time. But on restart it was faster to the log in window . . . still got the "clang-a-lang" sound when it loaded, but logging in went "OK" . . . not the zippiest, but acceptable . . . and no universal error red dot symbol!!! So that is more or less OK . . . I probably won't need to re- install . . . I have enough linux distros that I don't need stone axe reliability, but I do prefer systems that "work" when clicking on stuff . . . not taking 60 seconds to reboot from console, etc. For now I think we have "solved" the complaint in this bug report . . . however, I have another bug report filed on U-MATE && Lubuntu 20.10 and that bug happened again while running through the "apt full-upgrade" commands suggested to fix the slow boot issues of this bug . . . and that is that ubuntu seems to be wiping the EFI grub data . . . leaving only itself on the grub listing . . . . It's a pain to have to use the SG2 disk to boot over into OpenSUSE to fix a problem that ubuntu seems to be causing . . . devs don't seem to be able to address that issue, which has been going on for months and effects a fair number of people . . . . If you have any experience in the grub area and can offer some suggestions that would be helpful . . . . I can't believe it happened yet again today in spite of my looking through the packages and not seeing "grub-" as it has been in the recent events with this problem . . . . Ubuntu does not seem to be playing well with others . . . for might be the last 9 -12 months?? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1894242 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to apport in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1893952 Title: Repeated apport failures causing long boot delays Status in apport package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Full log in comment #4. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1829401] Re: gi.repository.GLib.GError: pk-client-error-quark: could not do untrusted question as no klass support
Adding my story here . . . in U-MATE running sources.list as "devel" and some of the list is ID-ing as "groovy" . . . it is showing as 20.10 . . . had some issues with the broadcom package not updating in apt, so on the U-MATE forum with wolfman and he had me look at my "Software & Updates" data, and while just looking at the items in "edit," and even though I changed nothing I got the same scenario as norbert in #3 post . . . where the "cache refresh" window opens, progress bar fills . . . but then window doesn't close--this time the crash report window opened. I believe this happened previously and I might have FQd in the GUI . . . . Just to add my $.02 . . . I also had this problem with perhaps 6/12 daily and then I zsyncd what I think is the 6/15 daily . . . finding the same "kernel panic" report as Dan found. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1607966] [NEW] X doesn't start with r128 driver with PM 3, 1 PPC ATI Rage
Public bug reported: I was working on bug #1541082 which was reporting "blotchy" graphics images on my PowerMac3,1 with Rage ATI Pro 128 card . . . and got the suggestion to try to add the "r128" driver, which I did. After that the display went black. After fiddling around with it, I removed the r128 driver, made an xorg.conf file . . . and after numerous attempts to get the display back, today I got "fbdev" and mode "1920 x 1200" to bring the GUI back online . . . but, there was another "xorg" crash on reboot, which I reported, along with filing this bug against the r128 module for this PPC machine. I'll post back on the "progress" . . . when I get there. Good news, after trying three or four different variations, the GUI is back using "fbdev" and I also changed the mode to "1920 x 1200" . . . and the log in splash image is "smoother" than it was before, "blotchy" but not as "blotchy" as it was before the xorg.conf file. Only caveat is there was a "crash report" generated relating to "xorg-server" or something like that. I "reported" it. There was an obvious "glitch" in the mouse cursor movement when I logged in which I've come to understand indicates a "crash." I'm typing this in the MATE 16 GUI; we'll see how it goes on reboot. Sending the apport-collect data to the new bug r128 related. Although when I booted the live DVD session it took literally 3 or 4 minutes for the cursor to appear and then the desktop; and perhaps I haven't been letting it take that long with these recent efforts?? It's all become a tad bit "odd" . . . in that trying the --configure gambit was returned as "failed" . . . and looking through "lsmod" shows none of the usual suspects as far as video drivers goes . . . and I did "autoclean" trying to remove "r128" to see if that would let the xorg.conf get busy . . . and r128 didn't show up in that list, so I did "sudo rm x-x-v-r128" (spelled out) and then it said "no such file or directory" . . . . And, multiple reboots and so forth, makes for a lot of time . . . . Anyway, as it is now, the graphics are not "blotchy" . . . they are "gone" so I don't know how I can support a "new" Bugzilla r128 bug with "evidence" because . . . now the screen is black, etc . . . and there is an xorg.conf file whereas before there wasn't, etc. I did look over the Xorg.log a couple times . . . nothing of any apparent relevance showed up, but then this area is an area of weakness . . . I have the "dual-boot" install process down, and years back I spent endless hours trying to get 12.04 to run the display on my old iMac 800 . . . now I'm generally finding that it is easier to do a fresh install than to mess around with the console on the tiny details . . . . But, I was thinking this morning I have some notes about the display "modes" where I have used something like "1024 x 768@60-32" . . . something like that, and ***that*** did make a difference on my iBook to get the display to work properly . . . possibly that is worth trying out . . . . I'll post back on the "progress" . . . when I get there. I was leaving it to see if there was any other troubleshooting to try out. I'll have to look over filing a bug report and then getting the Xorg.log out to them; I've done that a few times over the years, but, then so much time passes that it isn't as "clear" as it was. But, I took a look at your basic xorg.conf . . . I was earlier wondering that if I ran the "Xorg -configure" gambit, and see which video driver it would "pick up" . . . ??? I think it would look similar to your file I have done the xorg.conf thing quite a number of times, using another one and editing it, etc . . . but, in some ways the -configure gambit is "easier"??? I guess the question is, if before the r128 install I wasn't using an xorg.conf file, do I need one now? Or, I would have to do a fresh install to get back to "the way it was" and now, no choice but the use one? Looking over the log it was looking like it was or is using "24 bit depth" . . . but, now, "can't find a screen"??? Re: [Touch-packages] [Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3, 1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images
> > Just found out that the needed xserver-xorg-video-r128 package is no > longer installed by default in Yakkety. Maybe this is also the case in > Xenial. So the easy solution for you would be to "sudo apt-get install > xserver-xorg-video-r128" and reboot. Maybe you get an accelerated 24bpp > desktop again without needing a supplementary xorg.conf! > > @ernst: So I ran that suggestion, and rebooted . . . and depending on how you look at it, it either "solved" the "blotchy graphics" problem . . . or it didn't . . . as the display came back to an "energized" display of blackness. I can see that the display is "getting connected" . . . but, showing as lighter in the corners, but overall . . . black. So, indeed the blotchy graphics are no longer a problem . . . . : - ) On reboot the "TTY" logging info shows up, and I recall that back when we both started talking about this "slow booting" problem, that then, as now there is the line "aty128fb invalid ROM contents" . . . and I remember tryiing to find "aty128" in synaptic and or running that in the terminal . . . and nothing showed up. Anyway, today that data shows up, all the stuff prior to the log in splash can be seen, but the log in splash is "black" . . . one difference is that previously it took a number of windows showing these "errors" to get to the splash . . . today it got to the black much faster. >From a TTY I ran sudo update/upgrade . . . and I ran "sudo apt-get -f install" and it just showed the previous kernel to be "removed." I shut the machine down and cold booted a couple times . . . then I ran "lsmod" and, it was off the side of the screen, but I didn't see any "r128" or anything listed for "video" . . . whereas there was a bunch of modules for "snd" . . . . I was going to give up but, for humor I checked the xorg.conf file, which was as I thought, empty. I then tried to run "sudo Xorg-configure" from the TTY and it brought back a "fatal server error" E) Server is already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.XO-lock (or is that /tmp/.X0???) and start again . . . . [This step is beyond my knowledge or experience, so I didn't try that out.] Possibly that is referring to the fact that the display seems to be "energized" with black light, but it isn't showing the blotchy graphics or anything else for that matter . . . . Obviously I could "rm" r128, but, if there are any other suggestions to try, I'll give it a shot. I'm not quite understanding why there was a "fatal error" on the "Xorg -configure" gambit, I've done that a few times, from the TTY . . . and then "moved" it or "cp" it into the etc/X11 or whatever, file . . . but this time it didn't let me do that, for then possibly editing the "r128" module into it, etc. Any ideas? Re: [Touch-packages] [Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3, 1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images
@ernst: Many, many thanks for the details . . . I can see numerous "errors" showing up as the OS loads, including something about the "r128" "failing," I think we've discussed some of these things before . . . but, since for the most part "things were working" I didn't mess with it. But, indeed, very easy to test out your suggestion for the r128 module . . . and then see what happens. I did check the "Display" stats in the Control Center and it seemed like things were showing "OK" . . . but, didn't do any "lsmod" checks, etc. Might be able to get to that tomorrow . . . I'll post back if and when I do . . . . Again, appreciate the time you spent on this . . . . Re: [Touch-packages] [Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3, 1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images
@ernsteiswuerfel: Thanks for the post. I believe that in the install of U-MATE on the 3,1 things ran so well that there is no xorg.conf. Most everything in he display resolution is great, and it was only the background image that was looking like the topo map. Since the dev had gotten back to me to post the screen shot, and then, nothing posted/commented back about it, I've come to the conclusion that it is just the image file itself that is a low spec/low res image. Other backgrounds, like the "cosmos" one that changes images, some of them are perfect, and others have this low resolution issue. If my overall display resolution was low resolution, which I have seen with some older installs, then messing with the xorg.conf file would be worth my time--here, most everything, words and so forth, most images, are all crisp. From what you have posted from the Xorg log, possibly I am running the fbdev driver, in the past I think I found another driver did a better job with an nvidia card, but, overall I think the display is "fine." It was just on the log in window, which is sort of like the "front door" or "grand entrance" to the OS, and the background photo was low resolution . . . didn't look good. Doesn't seem to be a concern for those who develop and or select the photos. It is very clear in the last photos, if you know what a topographic map looks like? Do you know what I'm referring to when I say "topographic"?? If you look into the desktop image(s), rather than a blending transition, as is the probable intention--the transitions are "stacked" like a topographic map image of a mountain. And along with that the edges of the different "elevations" are jaggedy lines . . . . On the screen it is very blatant . . . the desktop images look like they are formed by a low resolution graphics driver . . . whereas the icons and text are rendered very well. I think that is also clear in the #135 image. Look carefully and you can see what I'm talking about in the photos. Up to you, just so you know that it is still a problem, and it is not "subtle" or anything that could be missed . . . . Re: [Touch-packages] [Bug 1541082] Re: blotchy GUI graphics for images in 16.04 PPC
CP: Thanks for the reply . . . I can get you a camera shot, I'll have to get back to that computer later today to do that . . . one display shared by the PPC and a newer machine, and I'll post that photo. The testing of the current image as a fresh download . . . a little time consuming on my slow DSL line . . . that may or may not happen. I just ran an update via apt-get a few days ago, and while running U-MATE this am the desktop image is the same blotchy deal that it has been since I posted this bug report. It's easier to run an update/upgrade than it is to even zsync and make a usb flash drive of the daily . . . . I ***could*** do that, but, it will take some time, and, then, question is, has anything "changed" such that it won't be a time flush? : - 0 On Mon, Jul 4, 2016 at 9:04 AM, Christopher M. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1400967] Re: Cannot open my session graphically in Lu 14.04 PPC
@Gunnar: Thanks kindly for the reply, looks like a bit before you posted here, Manfred H on answers offered what might be a similar suggestion . . . since he has patiently been working with me for awhile on this problem I tried it first, and it seems to have fixed the problem . . . I'm typing this back in my original user account. Try logging in as the new user and issue the terminal command sudo chown -R fritzhud:fritzhud /home/fritzhud/.gvfs sudo chown fritzhud:fritzhud /home/fritzhud/.Xauthority sudo chown fritzhud:fritzhud /home/fritzhud/.hcwd and then try loggin in as fritzhud again. Now I'll be moving on to seeing if suspend can be fixed for PPC 14.04 . . . . : - 0 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to lightdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1400967 Title: Cannot open my session graphically in Lu 14.04 PPC Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I am having a problem on my iBook G4 running Lu 14.04.1 . . . after running a recent update/upgrade with only 3 or 4 items listed, dbus was one I remember . . . screen went black . . . tried to do something in TTY console to restart . . . then wound up shutting down.
