I have just tried running firefox from the firefox-nightly download and all
runs well using that version
125.0a1 (2024-03-17) (64-bit).
I assume the beta3 you speak of is the new version of apparmor; is that
the same version as the current apparmor-proposed version?

I have seen the problem with firefox tabs crashing in the .deb installation
and when running direct from the downloaded .tar.bz from Mozilla.
Firefox opens but tabs show error saying "Tab crashed"
This has forced me to use the snap version which works fine though I prefer not
to use snaps at
Same problem on Mate and Xubuntu Noble.
Can not use synaptic in the usual manner to make changes to repositories so
this needs fixing asap.

The iso from today, Ubuntu-MATE 24.04 LTS "Noble Numbat" - Daily amd64
(20240226) has just installed perfectly in KVM with no problem booting
to a full GUI.
It seems that the arctica-greeter difficulty has been overcome.

As I was successfully using xdm instead of lightdm in my KVM installation of
Ubuntu-Mate-24.04 I removed lightdm from the system.
I was surprised to see that arctic-greeter was also removed, not
lightdm-greeter as I had assumed was being used by the system.
Reinstalling lightdm with
I have added slim dm instead if lightdm which works for logging in but does not
allow the system to shutdown but reboots instead.
I have now added xdm as display manager and that is working as it should for
login and shutdown.

I've also tried the kernel option apparmor=0 and can confirm that it made no
difference; still got to a black screen and no GUI.
I have not had time to try the move to gdm instead of lightdm but may also try
that later.
Can I assume this problem occurs on a bare metal install as well as on a
I had the same black screen after logging in to a virtual install in KVM from
the iso file of Feb 5.
Moving to tty3 I ran startx and was surprised to see the GUI appear, though
then running command
echo $XDG_DESKTOP_STYLE
I see output of tty, not x11 as I anticipated.
I normally remove all snap
I have this problem message on both a laptop and desktop with old
spinning disks, not SSDs but both boot to a fully working OS of Xubuntu
22.04. Both machines also have fully updated Focal 20.04 versions
running, neither of which display the message.
When I was first aware of this on my laptop I
A ubuntuforums thread about this problem

has a solution or workaround of simply adding %U to the Exec= line of
the gdebi.desktop file so it reads "Exec=gdebi-gtk %U".
This has allowed use of gdebi from the file manager either
I have never used the gdebi/firefox method that is talked about but I do
use gdebi to install packages that are available only manually such as
plexmediaserver.
It can still be used by opening gdebi first from the "Activities" menu
top left then using "File -> Open" menu item, but I can not find
This morning at about 10:30 UTC I updated to cups-2.1.3-4ubuntu0.3 on my 64bit
Xubuntu-16.04 using kernel 4.4.0-92 and it has so far not stopped running.
My /etc/cups/cupsd.conf has the "WebInterface Yes" entry but so far no problems
at all, though I had no problems with the
I forgot about this bug, but I later realised that the problem was due to my
installation of the OS from a daily cd version of the ISO file from

rather than the normal download site. I did not realise
Same problem here on my Xubuntu 16.04 64bit system using UEFI.
I have added the "fastboot" boot option to /etc/default/grub to remove the

than 14.04, about 20 secs from end of grub to the login screen, where 14.04,
An update to my post #36.
I can now confirm that the problem is solved for me; cups no longer
stops running after a few minutes, and once again I am able to access

Same problem affects my installation of Xubuntu-16.04.1 64bit system.
I have enabled proposed and updated all the many cups packages in that
repository and then disabled proposed again.
I think this has solved my problem of cups stopping running but will have to
report back after running for
The output from
"dpkg -S /etc/apt/sources.list.d/proposed.list"
is now what I expected,
"dpkg-query: no path found matching pattern

as I have now disabled the proposed repos so that is no help.
I did not think to look in the "Other software" tab of
Hopefully a final comment about this from me, with a suggestion about
how to restore the packages that you don't want from "proposed" back to
stable repository versions.
With some help from another Ubuntuforums member, 1fallen, I was given this info
page from askubuntu
Just as a trial I have a few minutes ago restored the proposed.list file
to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ which is where I originally found it, and
once again I am not able to disable the proposed repos from software-
sources GUI. Whatever I do, the tick in the selection box of the

I found the two files, proposed.list and proposed.list.save in
/etc/apt/sources.list.d folder and both of them had the same content:-

Neither file had that one line commented out with a # as I would
OK, that worked as expected, and now when I go to Software Sources from the
Xubuntu menu I can enable and disable the proposed repos without a problem as I
expect to be able to do.
This is baffling!

Touch seeded packages,
Just noticed the same thing in my Xubuntu 16.04.
I do not recall enabling proposed at all, so I'm baffled.
I have now removed the proposed.list and proposed.list.save from
/etc/apt/sources.list.d folder by commenting the files with a # and will
see what that does.

Using sudo nano /etc/fstab still makes a hidden root-owned .nano folder
in my home, so as far as I'm concerned the bug is still live.
