For what it's worth, I recently upgraded to 18.04 and this no longer
seems to be an issue. I removed my ~/.xprofile and the compose key seems
to work with the /etc/default/keyboard setting alone.

After a recent update in 18.04, in XFCE/Xubuntu, when I start an XFCE
terminal, and run the 'groups' command, I only see my primary group show
up. If I log into the system via ssh, I see all the groups associated
with the user. See here for more detail:
The uninstall procedure did NOT work to me!
Hope to find a good way out!
Thanks for the help so far!
