1. are the files executable in the terminal? if so, you should check the
executable flags. this may be obvious, but it's worth looking into.
2. are they only files that use #!/usr/bin/python? what about python3? what

are there ANY executable files that show the icon?
where's the upstream link to this hint you got?
what version of 14.10? is it an alpha? beta? daily image?

another successful test:
image: Xubuntu i386 20141016
vm: VirtualBox 4.3.18-96516~Ubuntu~raring
host: Kubuntu 14.04
boots straight to the try/install screen without having to flip virtual
terminals or anything.
i'm guessing this is either a host hardware conflict of some kind or
fixed upstream. please pull down the latest apt and we should be good to
go.

0.4.9.2-0ubuntu6) and i cannot confirm the bug.
i upgraded lxsession on that same system and i cannot confirm the bug.
long story short, regardless of lxsession version, the bug depends upon
lightdm.

information. currently, i'm trying to figure out whether or not lightdm,
lxsession or both are the problem.
what i can tell you so far is someone tried to do it with lxdm and got
the same problem on a regular account. lxdm has

Confirmed on i386 in VirtualBox 4.3.26 from upstream repos. Was able to
get to the virtual terminal and indeed the system is not frozen but
nothing doing. lightdm fails to start and there seem to be errors
setitng up the display in X.

Michal, that's not how patching works, unfortunately. You can put all
that in a file and use the `patch` command. The easy way is to go to the
folder containing the file and run `sudo patch < /path/to/diff`.
