This is pretty frustrating...sigh, still no progress. I used sudo vi to
insert and save what you suggested into /etc/rc.local. Then rebooted, still
coming up to terminal on boot.
Is there any harm in using sudo service lxdm start longterm? I was hoping to

Looks like /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/swrast_dri.so is missing. Install
libgl1-mesa-dri. (or the matching lts version of it if you have a newer x.)

I didn't see anything that said "text" in /etc/default/grub. This is what it
looks like:

Thanks for your response, it helped...but still some issues.
After typing in
$sudo apt-get install trisquel-mini trisquel-mini recommended
it seemed to download some packages, some said previously installed.
I then rebooted, still ended up at terminal.

I do have it on a USB drive, made with Unetbootin. Same results when I try to
install it that way...
I also selected the "check CD for errors" feature. It all looked good.

There may be problems with your CD. Anyway, I suggest "burning" it to a flash
drive instead, using something like unetbootin (which can be searched for on
the web). Unetbootin supports non-free distros, though.

I just tried to install Trisquel 6 again on the 2009 Toshiba laptop...at the
scanning the CD stage, I got the error message:
