It seems that the /home partition is not encrypted, then there are numerous
ways to retrieve the pictures. The easiest way may be logging on your better
half's account and copy the Pictures folder of your account to her home
directory (if there is enough disk space remaining on the /home

1. Hold [Shift] key when booting computer (don't wait anything appears

This is what I would suggest if the OP wanted to go back to using this
system. I am under the impression that they just want to recover data
from it, which can be achieved more easily by mounting the disk with
