I have not considered purchasing an external ethernet adapter because I have
read that other people ran into problems
Your right, I should use a faster wireless adapter. My router supports 5GHz
and up to 300 MBit/s and my current subscriptions offers me 50/2.5 MBit of
internet bandwidth. So the real word bandwith of g networking is would be
insufficient.

su will not work because the root password is locked by default, one is
expected to use sudo.
So, to become root use sudo su, which asks for YOUR password and not root's.
In case you have forgotten YOUR password, you need a live media. Or another
OS which can access your /etc/shadow file.
Installed and rebooted while attached. Still nothing happens on both USB

Yes, I was also fearing that this is an issue with the USB ports.
Now, I have created an ubuntu-12.04.2-desktop-amd64 live USB (not the
alternate iso, because that one does not offer run without installing ubuntu
first).
The TP-link adapter is working in this live ubuntu on my macbook air!
I host everything myself;
you can solve the problem with the static ip easily with a service like
noip.com (it's free of charge).
A small script (included in the free-debian repos, don't know about trisquel)
sends the new ip to noip.com and then your domain gets linked to the new ip
instead

There is a connected mailing list for this forum:

Ha, the 12.04.2 version does use the 3.5 series kernel series AFAIK, so that
could be the reason.
In fact, I have considered in the past to use a fully free software
compatible router. But getting this done is very difficult:
1) Limited availability of providers which also have very different pricing.
2) Some providers nowadays require you to use their router etc. This makes it
easier

Ok, just to be sure, can you confirm this with the output of the uname -r
command?
So, is this the Trisquel-users mailing list that you are talking about? Do

Yet, the price is really high at the moment.

Definitely NO! The device isn't FLOSS compatible at all. You should only
focus on the ath9k_htc compatible ones. The smallest and cheapest device I am
aware of (already compared all of the listed devices) is the Unex DNUA-93F.
There are alternatives such as the Onkyo
I am very thanful for all the articles. It fortifies me to use Trisquel and
try to persuade people in my neighborhood to this distrbution.
Thank you all.
Thanks for the ath9k_htc compatible list! I might buy the Onkyo UWF-1 because
it's so small and the price is fair.
But I'll go through the whole list and see if there are even smaller ones.
;-)
Edit: Most of them don't have pictures yet. So this is like searching a
needle in a hay stack.

Thanks for the update Andrew.
This behavior is not common and therefore unexpected, but I I just noticed

Just copy the device name from the list to the DuckDuckGo search box, and

I do not like it, but at least I understand now. Thanks :)
I don't like it either and thus filed https://trisquel.info/en/issues/2003
I've been pondering doing this myself. How are the costs?
'sudo -i' gives you a root terminal ($HOME is /root and so on) with your user
password.
It sounds like Qupzilla can't handle direct connections to tor. Install
privoxy, and point privoxy to tor via the following line in privoxy config:
#forward-socks5 / 127.0.0.1:9050 .
Removing the # sign in the above line in the privoxy config will allow

Ah, sorry. I overlooked that. Now try to download the 3.5 series kernel,
install it, and see what happens. Also, do not forget to attach the output of
the uname -r command.
Suppose you haven't forgotten the password, but you just want to change it.
How can you do that?
Wohoo! You did it :D
It's working now. I can connect the TL-WN772N adapter anytime I want and
connect to the world wide web.
The throughput is not optimal but I really don't care about that right now.
Thank you very much for your help!
In case Triquel updates the kernel sometimes later
Congrats!
In case Triquel updates the kernel sometimes later (but to a version 3.5)
will it downgrade my installation so that I'd have to install this again?
I believe the kernel with the largest version number is the default choice,
so no.
That's good. Thanks!
It worked! Thanks @mYself!

Use the passwd command. There might be a fancy GUI way too.
Wow, this bug is already three years old! I shall leave a comment there right
now.
The GUI way depends on the DE, but for GNOME it's in Users and Groups.
You can log in as you normally would, and do the same 'passwd' command
as mentioned in this thread. You'll be asked for the old password, the
new password, then to confirm the new password.

Noobquestion i think, but how do i open jar-files in trisquel ? and install

The arguments are passed to the main method of the Java program. As for the
options passed to the interpreter (you probably want none), you can take a
look at:

The requirements for making your computer able to connect into your wireless

- you need to download and put the htc_7010.fw (optional but recommended,
since future devices might require it) and htc_9271.fw firmware files into

Another strange error I noticed recently:
When the power adapter is not connected and my laptop is running with battery
power only, my mouse stops to work after some seconds. If I reconnect it, it
works again for some more seconds and then stops again. Has anyone else
experienced this?
Also, did matt not install the proprietary Wi-Fi drivers at some earlier
point of this discussion? Perhaps we need to remove them.
I think you're misunderstanding the fsf. I'm not an expert, but here is my
point of view.
The point is:
whenever software is on a rom and it's not modifiable, yes, the fsf doesn't
consider it as software and the four freedoms don't apply.
BUT the fsf raises the next question to all things
It's fine. I can do a radical makeover (tomorrow, it's late already) and
install again from scratch. All my important data is on a shared partition
anyway.
This time I'll follow straight your instructions from this comment:
I can guide you to recover your system if you want, but it is too complex.
What happened?
I did install proprietary firmware, but since then I had already done another
full reinstall of Trisquel and Ubuntu to (re-)check what worked regarding
Wi-Fi with external adapters and what not.
Additionally, you may need to install java first:
sudo aptitude install openjdk-7-jre
should help.
That's of course good but if the software isn't free, it can't be included in
Trisquel.
No need, I will do a reinstall then tomorrow. And then only apply the first
of the two commands, right?
What happened?
No much really. There weren't really any error messages. But lots of stuff
got 'removed'.
The last two lines said something like you may have to update grub.cfg.

Why do I need the htc_9271.fw firmware, though? I did not have it installed

Not installed? The ath9k_htc_linux_driver package install script copied both
the htc_7010.fw and htc_9271.fw files after the execution into the
/lib/firmware folder, so are you sure?? The output of the ls /lib/firmware

This is a very interesting topic.
Just because a program is non-modifiable, doesn't mean that it respects your
freedom. Quite the opposite, in fact. The whole point of free software is to
have the freedom to do your computing as you see fit.
You were right, I need the ath9k driver package.
