I disagree. People who do not want to learn how to use a terminal and yet  
want to install and use programs absent from the default install (i.e., more  
than 90% of the population, including, for instance, my parents, my brother  
or my wife) would never use Trisquel (contrary to, for instance, my parents,  
my brother or my wife). They would believe there is no way to install  
additional software but following unsafe the Windows way of downloading  
applications from their sites... what often means, in the GNU/Linux world,  
downloading source codes that they cannot compile. Opening the Synaptic  
package manager, searching in the description of the packages and installing  
them is a breeze. Learning alone how to use 'apt-cache' and 'apt-get' or  
'aptitude' (+ the mere existence of those commands + sudo + the basic use of  
a terminal) is not something most people want to do. And I do not see  
anything wrong with that.


Notice that most computer users spend far more time writing in a word  
processor than administrating their system. By your logic Trisquel should not  
include LibreOffice but rather only ship Emacs (or should it be 'vim'?) and  
LaTeX. It is indeed a far better and faster way to produce perfectly  
formatted texts. But you first need to learn the use of that powerful text  
editor, the LaTeX language, how to go from the .tex files to the PDF, etc.

Even if Audacity can be a great sound editing tool, I'm very distrurbed by  
the way Audacity do things.


I'm trying to set the equalizer effect to a sound, but Audacity does't allow  
me to listening my setting while I'm doing it (I always have to set up first  
then listen a sample of what I've done).


Is there any way to modify this or is there any tool that allow to modify FX  
(especilally equalizer FX) in a sound file while in the FX setting ?


I'm a bit confused with plug in tools that seems to only work for midi  
softwares and maybe not Audacity.

(non-fully-libre) distributions because we don't ship microcode updates.

Do CPU microcode updates really get distributed normally by the kernel? I was  
under the impression that this was something the BIOS does, and that in  
practice you never get updates past what was already there when you bought  
it.

Sorry, but I think I did that only in this thread. And yes , that's not good

So, as you say, freedom of speech it's not easy so there are limitations to  
try to achieve that. In the English trisquel forum those limitation DOES NOT  
APPLY to users like lembas, onpon4, MagicBanana, moxalt, etc. Thus, it is  
censure made by themselves.


Also, an ad-hominem attack is when you use a human being as an argument (on  
this case) and I didn't do that. In fact, as MagicBanana said I didn't sum up  
ANY ARGUMENT. So, there CANNOT be an ad-hominem attack.
Simply making statements without an argument doesn't mean you don't have one  
and the downvotes didn't have any arguments.
For example: onpon4 said he doesn't agree with Richard Stallman being a  
troll. The he sums up an argument of that. However, think what would happened  
if he wouldn't have summed up an argument... Read it:

The latest "LTS enablement stack" is based on Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet (just  
replace "utopic" with "vivid"). But an even more more recent kernel from  
jxself's repository. https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/update-linux-libre-kernel

This is why you're having the issue. You should always use gksudo and not  
sudo to start graphical apps.

I'm not sure Rubén Rodríguez, Francis Rowe, or Richard Stallman are really  
good candidates for various reasons. RMS is obviously ineligible (or it was  
to some here anyway). There are a number of other people who deserve  
recognition for the work they've done including Rubén Rodríguez and Francis  
Rowe, but I'm skeptical that this award is appropriate for these people. The  
award has traditionally been given to people who have primarily working on  
software development. While there is some of that going on within these  
projects I'm not convinced I'd call it the primary focus. Packaging, removing  
code, reverse engineering, and similar efforts are worthy of an award, but  
that's not really primarily software development.


I think we need a more general award to recognize a slew of people who are  
making major contributions, but of whom are not directly working on software  
development projects. This could include people who are managing  
distributions (ie building, maintaining, and packaging software, and writing  
bits of code here and there), spreading free software (in significant ways),  
advocating for release of code from within (think hardware too), designing  
chips/laptops/desktops/board that make it possible to run 100% software, and  
similar.


I can think of a dozen people I'd like to nominate and yet I have never  
nominated anyone as I haven't felt the awards were appropriate to the work  
they're/were doing. It's my main reason for abstaining. I don't feel that  
releasing code under a free software license in and of itself is deserving of  
a free software award. It's important, but it's not everything.

With that logic, why not installing all window managers by default? The  
problem is it would not only eat up space on the installation ISO, but it  
would also mean more utilities (to choose the window manager and configure  
each of the the options), hence more confusion. ;-)


I use Mutter. GNOME 3's default, i.e., the window manager GNOME Shell uses.  
The evolution of Metacity. I specified keyboard shortcuts (in the related tab  
of the "Keyboard" utility in the "System settings") to jump to any of the ten  
first workspaces.

I totally agree except I still wouldn't call it primarily software  
development work though. It's why I think there should be another award  
category. I think reverse engineering and other related work is as if not  
more important. However I'm not a big fan of that. I'd rather support the  
people from within who are getting companies to release code. I already know  
we have a few people here and there which are doing a tremendous amount of  
good at getting people at the top of particular companies to recognize there  
is a problem (ie complying with free software licenses and so on) and getting  
them to understand what needs to be done to solve non-compliance related  
issues (and/or release source if its not a compliance issue- ie they own the  
copyrights).

Reverse engineering is possibly the highest priority the FSF has at the  
moment. Plus, libreboot is not just about removing blobs, there's also work  
on automating scripts to make it user-friendly, as well as porting work done  
upstream at coreboot. IMO it's one of the most important fields of work on  
free software today. Firmware is our last frontier, and these people are  
tackling it.

you might be a troll given how absurd your post he was responding to was. But  
even if your narrative was correct, that still wouldn't mean you lack freedom

hmm,

I don't think that is going to be all that easy to do. I might switch VPN  
providers over it (even if that isn't a great answer). Unfortunately the  
other solution I'd probably go with is not ready yet (in a 100% free solution  
format that is, but we are working on it). What is that? OpenVPN support at  
the router level. You wouldn't need to run VPN software on the computer  
itself, just connect to it over an encrypted wifi connection (ie it tunnels  
all the traffic from the network over the VPN connection between the router  
and the VPN provider). libreCMC doesn't currently support OpenVPN, but we're  
trying to get the bugs worked out so users can adopt it on routers that have  
a sufficient amount of flash and ram. Once the next version of libreCMC is  
released that'll be the other option I'd recommend. It should enable more  
users to more easily adopt VPN for certain use cases. Hopefully we'll server  
support as well, or at some point down the road. That would open up more use  
cases. For example secure connections between a school network connection and  
a home network.

I'm probably coming at this from the wrong angle, but here goes: I don't even
support the presence of graphical package management in Trisquel. I don't use
it, don't recommend it, and (when helping others with/ installing GNU for
others) teach them the command-line way of doing things. I never understood the
need for graphical package management- although I concede that this makes
things 'easier' for the first-time user and more similar to the point-and-click
interfaces they are used to, frankly I don't think a user who isn't prepared to
get a terminal open should even be installing new packages and diving into the
often-times confusing world of GNU package management.

There are two main aims which must be kept in mind when considering introducing
people to the free software camp- of course, free software must be as
attractive and functional as possible in order to attract new users. This is
why I support a wide range of well-made user-friendly applications bundled
together with the wonderfully set up Trisquel DE in the default install, to
make things more hassle-free for those just dipping in to GNU for the first
time.

However, the cost of making everything require zero thought is twofold: it
leads to bad administration habits and potentially endangers the user's system,
and it also perpetuates the culture of ignorance that the corporate software
world breeds- the approach that presents users a *surface* upon which to do
their business without asking serious questions about what their computer is
doing, how, or why- or knowing about anything below the surface. This is
antithetical to the aims of free software and opposition to the culture of
ignorance- the creation of a free digital society in which all are participants.

What is the solution? Clearly the world of free software must be as attractive
as possible. However, we must also take care not to breed bad habits,
ignorance, and we must set people on the path to reasonable computer literacy-
a stage at which they have a decent understanding of what's going on behind the
scenes, aren't afraid to ask questions, and aren't afraid to get the command
line open and do some learning themselves.

The best way of doing this is two maintain two main installation options. The
first is a 'new user'-friendly ISO containing the Trisquel DE and stuffed with
as many good applications as possible. The other should be a minimalist
netinstall setup (like the current one) in which all installation options are
to be set by more experienced users who know what they want. Neither should
offer graphical package management.

Perhaps the 'user-friendly' CD could contain a link in the DE labelled
'Add/Remove Programs'. However, this should link to a help file explaining the
concepts behind GNU package management, and APT in particular, explaining (at
the start) just a few basics:

- APT configuration (such as the source list)
- adding, removing, and purging programs
- updating the package list and upgrading the system.

What do you think? It sounds a bit elitist, but I sincerely think this is the
way to start people on the path to terminal literacy.

This is also somewhat biased based on my own experience- my first distribution
of GNU+Linux was Debian, which I started with about a year ago. However, I
never touched Synaptic and taught myself how to do things the dpkg/apt-get way.
Simply being in contact with the terminal kickstarted me on the learning
process, and I am learning new things about GNU every day. The basics of
terminal package management aren't really that difficult to grasp- anyone can
learn.

Hi,

My VPN provider (owncube) has upgraded their backend and ask me to use a  
newer OpenVPN version. (I think it is because of TLS 1.2 support etc?)

The version I've got in my trisquel installation is 2.3.2 (Trisquel 7).
I'm satisfied with the way Trisquel works and how stable it is (for my use).

What is your advice to get the openvpn to a newer version, without breaking  
the default Trisquel installation? (At least not destroy it totally).

Actually, while Freeciv has rulesets that try to emulate Civ 1 and Civ 2, the  
primary ruleset is distinct in quite a few ways, and the Freeciv engine  
supports many things these games don't support.

Switching vendor is not an option :) - sorry. Have a great deal (life time  
for a few buckets) and access to 17 countries.
