Can someone confirm if PlayOnLinux is actually free software?
Because it seems to me that it recommends non-free software.

from memory, PlayOnLinux is free software (same as WINE) and it even supports
only the installation of the game if you have the original CD (it won't work
with cracks or something like that).
Now, just like WINE is basically a tool to run windows software in linux,
PlayOnLinux does the same
All that being said, I think there is a project called PlayOnLinux that is
kinda like "wine for games". Check it out, I remember in my earlier days of
Linux world, that I wanted to play some games and discovered that project, it
seemed to have improved support for commercial games.
Dunno if
Where do you prefer to get LibreOffice? From Trisquel repos (older version,
presumably more stable but less features) or from their own website, which
has a deb package that can install itself like a charm (newer, maybe with
some undiscovered bugs but more features).
Or since I am asking,
Another alternative may be to look into tox, a distributed chat client.

I don't have a need for the latest LibreOffice release. The only reason I
would download LibreOffice from the LibreOffice website is if I found that I
did need the latest version for some particular reason.
PlayOnLinux isn't an alternative to Wine, it's a front-end for Wine that's
supposed to make running certain well-known Windows programs easier. I never
looked deeply into it because I found it to be confusing and not helpful, but
my understanding is it has some sort of database of what
I install software ONLY from my repo. The few applications I don't find in my
repo or that are of an older version and don't work properly I wget the
source, untar, install the dependencies and compile.
cheers Gnuser!
In general I prefer to use as much software as possible from Trisquels repo.
If its buggy version in Trisquel repo (Liferea) or I must have "the newest
version" I find another source but that isnt many programs. Libreoffice
version insluded in Trisquel 7 works great for me.
I use the KISS
Tox is alpha non-audited software. It is not a safe alternative. I hope it
will be in a year or two.
That's correct Onpon. A front-end for Wine that adds nothing to it. I
installed and used both for few months when I first switched to GNU. I
remember I ended using standard Wine, because POL did nothing useful at all.
Hi everybody, I just joined the forum with the intention to report this.
I'm also being affected by this bug, it has happened after installing
updates, according to the update manager the new kernel installed would be

OK, thanks for the clarification.
Admittedly I don't do a lot with Office suites. Usually just need to open
some documents that people send me. Which is sometimes a problem, when I have
an important document that I need to use correctly (stuff like CVs, legal
documents that need to be returned, etc) I need the best
Also, I like my all my programs to be fast. LibreOffice seems to improve
booting times with each new release. Was very pleased with the improvement
from 3 to 4 and was wondering how it would be now in 5.
It works in none of my two USB-ports. The hard disk's LED lights up
immediately after plugging it in, though.
This is a 10-year-old laptop with a 1-year-old external disk with USB 3 (but
only 500 GB). Could that be a problem?
Hi all.
So I am going to give Trisquel another try.
I have some questions before I proceed:
1. I have Debian 7.8 installed with full disk encryption. Is there a way to
format the entire partition and install Trisquel without losing the
encryption already in place? It took almost 24 hours to
*sorry only know the answer to one of your questions
"Is it ok to install from a USB instead of a real DVD?"
yes its effectively exactly the same
When i connect my external hard drive to the computer before or even while
booting, it doesn't get mounted and i don't see how to mount it afterwards.
I'm sure there's a way to do that via command line, but i wonder why it
doesn't work automatically.
In dconf's section
I fully support the original posting and consider the first answers of moxalt
and SuperTramp83 as elitist, and elitist in a stupid way if those people want
to extend the range of Free Software.
I got almost nothing explained about how GNU/Linux systems work, but i
figured out to use Synaptic
Thanks for your reply tomlukeywood!
I have seen the work you have been doing for freedom, keep up the good work!
1. I am not sure but I think that formatting (i.e., installing a new
filesystem) necessary means losing the encryption in place on the older
filesystem. Here is the Trisquel documentation pertaining to full-disk
encryption: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/full-disk-encryption-install
2.
Thanks for your detailed reply!
1. That's what I thought too. Sigh... I will have to lose some time then.
2. So, if I just use the Belenos repository I will get security updates, but
no newer versions. For that I need the backports. But where do these
backports come from? Ubuntu or Debian?
2. Almost all Trisquel packages come from Ubuntu's respective repositories
(e.g., the packages backported to Trisquel 7 are packages backported to
Ubuntu 14.04). When I write that they "come from Ubuntu", I mean they were
copied and maybe patched to satisfy Trisquel's exigences in term of
And in the bigger scheme of things, it matters not too much at all really.
When I feel the "need" to access the website I can use a Trisquel 6.01 live
dvd that is "not updated". Happy hacking!
The PPA from https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa is very
up to date and recommended.
Ra -> Elitist? Really? lol. Wanting to do your computing on GNU/linux without
spending a little bit of your time and effort to learn apt (Debian based
distros) and the essential core utilities is like wanting to play guitar but
not spending some time to learn no scale or tabs.
I find it and
I use LibreOffice in the repos until I make a decision that there is a
special feature in the newer version that I need to use. When that happens, I
download the deb from the oficial website and I install it in all pcs of the
network that work together even if they use another OS.
I use LibreOffice 5 from their PPA-- it's definately a great improvement over
4.
Version 4 should work for your needs just fine, if you want to avoid PPAs and
stick to Trisquel's repo.
And no, I don't use OpenOffice. There isn't any reason to-- Apache's pretty
much abandoned it, leaving it
Hi all. I would like to permanently map a network drive with the intent to be
able to backup to it using the "Backup" app in Trisquel. I looked up the
Ubuntu method using the GUI but the interface is different. I also looked up
the command-line methods but it seems rather complicated. Would
For future reference...
Fstab can be used to mount drives on unix-like systems.

Hi Chris - Blank white CDs w/sleeves cost a few cents each, and you can print
& burn them in-house. The New Orleans 2005 Red Hat Summit CD is a good
example. :)

I don't feel the analogy is apt. For many people, computers are simply a
means to an end, perhaps even a necessary evil in their lives--certainly not
an instrument they aspire to gain proficiency in using for personal pleasure
or to creatively express themselves (e.g., a guitar). Some of
I had a kernel panic a week ago or something like that, but I didn't think
much of it so I didn't bother saving the log then.
Thanks for the clarifications.
I will maybe try and compile freenetbootin once I get my Trisquel install
done :)
In your experience (and other people's too) the Trisquel Belenos repository
(without backports) is basicay equal to Debian 8, or does it have newer
versions (for stuff like
If you have multiple USB ports, try another one. You might have different
versions of USB ports, the newer ones deliver more juice. Do any leds on the
drive light up? I believe it should auto mount. Or at least become visible in
Nautilus.
