I don't know where you got this information from at all. Tor updated the
stable release to the latest version of Firefox ESR within days, and they had
had it in the experimental release

This problem is solved but I'll leave it here for others who may find this
useful and/or fix whatever kernel patch breaks encryptfs.
Yesterday I ran dist-upgrade and turned off computer. Computer running
linux-libre stable 4.1.27 (jxself.org). Today turned on with the following
