I do not think it is doable with a GNOME shortcut because there does not seem
to be an option on the command line (I looked at 'man abrowser') to do that.
But I found a free software add-on that apparently does what you want:

[Trisquel-users] Bandwidth log

My internet connection seems to be unstable. My ISP only registers minor
disturbances in a short interval of time. Is there a way to have my computer
log the stability of the connection?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Add own short cut in Abrowser or Icecat?

2017-02-07 Thread jbahn
This works fine, but there is an annoying issue that I hope to be
(eventually!?) able to solve:

Using a short cut to open our forum works well, when I don't have an open
instance of the forum. My short cut opens a new tab with the forum, even
there is already a tab open with the forum. E.g. if I am at the bottom of a
thread, pressing my short cut will not take me to the forum page in that tab,
but rather leave the thread open and open a new tab with the forum.

Is there no way to come about this?

This is really a big step forward. Thanks for all the efforts.

I just posted a request similar to the following on replicant forum as well:

I am uncertain of exactly what and how to do. I know it's extra work in a
busy time, but I would really appreciate an easier 'manual' for getting wifi
to work in R6.0 on S2 and/or S3.

If there would be an easier to grasp explanation, I shall install and give
feedback asap.

R6.0 it self work very well, and especially the S3 is much faster than
before.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Floss Latex

2017-02-07 Thread lcerf
I will try to explain (probably with many imprecisions: sorry for the
purists) making a parallel with programming... so I hope you know the basics
of a programming activity.

TeX and LaTeX are typesetting languages. 'tex' and 'latex' are the names of
the commands to interpret the TeX or LaTeX languages. They turn the text
into a DVI file, which is then usually turned into a PDF file with 'dvipdf'
('pdflatex' directly produces a PDF file). Like a compiler turns a source
code into an executable binary.

LaTeX can be considered a superset of TeX, like C++ is a superset of C. You
certainly want to learn LaTeX and not TeX. For the same reason that you
should styles in LibreOffice: in LaTeX, you write what you want and not how
to do it (as in TeX), hence focusing on the content.

LaTeX is extensible with packages, the equivalent of a libraries in a
programming language. And there exist many fonts. And independent tools
(e.g., BiBTeX for formatting references). The so-called LaTeX distribution
group all that in a coherent whole. You want to rely on the "TeX Live"
distribution. It is the best LaTeX distribution, it is packaged in Trisquel
in many parts. In this way, you do not have to install all "TeX Live" to
only use a tiny part of it. The "texlive" meta-package depends on a
reasonable subset, i.e., triggers the installation of all the most popular
packages. But there is "texlive-full" too, if you want.

To write the text that will be interpreted with 'latex' or 'pdflatex', you
can use *any* text editor, like you can use any text editor to write in C++.
However there are sorts of IDE or LaTeX. That is what we were discussing.

Re: [Trisquel-users] My parents think if I advise someone how to use free software I might go to prision

2017-02-07 Thread onpon4
No. That's about as absurd as if Wal-mart was held responsible for selling
food to someone who later commits a terrorist attack. The only way I can
think of that you could possibly be held responsible is if someone literally
said to you, "I want to do X so that I can perform a terrorist attack, please
help me do X".

What on Earth gave them the impression that Replicant is a tool that
terrorists use, anyway? It's completely useless for terrorism. It takes away
features from the phone, it doesn't at all guarantee privacy, you have to get
exactly the right phone model for it to work, and it's a whole lot of effort.
If a terrorist is worried about phones being compromised by the government,
they either just won't use phones at all or they'll constantly switch between
disposable phones.

I would be more concerned about the circumstances under which you are meeting
a stranger, particularly if you are a minor. If that's the case, perhaps you
could invite one of your parents or another trusted adult to come along and
hang out in the public place where you meet and help this person. If you are
meeting someone about your age, hopefully you'll make a new friend and your
parents can learn something about tolerance.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Does Trisquel repositories supports HTTPS?

2017-02-07 Thread greatgnu

Exactly. This is a good answer to a similar question I've read recently.

HTTPS downloads in general provide two things: confidentiality of data
transfer, and integrity of

data transfer.

For purposes of integrity, HTTPS apt repositories provide no benefit. Apt
release files are already PGP signed by the distribution, so any files forged
in transit would be identified and rejected regardless of HTTP or HTTPS.

Without HTTPS, third parties like your ISP can observe which packages you
download, however, that has generally been considered to be of little
consequence.

IPS is a technology for panels which provides good viewing angles and high
quality color reproduction:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPS_panel

The following official 15" T60 panels are supported by Libreboot and are also
IPS:

LG-Philips LP150E05-A2K1 (1400x1050)
BOE-Hydis HV150UX1-100 (1600x1200)

You can also use unofficial panels (panels taken from other laptops), such as
IDtech IAQX10N (2048x1536) (originally provided in R50P - GRUB screen doesn't
show up but it loads GNU/Linux fine).

You can find a list of IPS panels here:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display

You can find out which panel you have using this guide:

https://libreboot.org/docs/misc/#get_edid_panelname

P.S. I currently use the panel LP150E05-A2K1. Before that I used IAQX10N
panels which unfortunately became unusable due to bad pixels.

Hello everyone,

Has anyone tried Bitmask VPN? You can try it from Riseup.net or Calyx. It’s
free as in freedom and in free beer, which doesn’t mean it’s compromised.
Riseup as an email provider doesn’t keep any data other than the data you
leave on their servers (don’t leave your emails there, though everything on
their servers is encrypted, get them on your harddisk through Icedove or
Thunderbird.) Some people say Riseup.net or Calyx etc. are compromised
because they’re in the US or in Canada, but I don’t think anywhere in
Europe is any safer, except Iceland perhaps?

Just to make sure there’s no misunderstanding: Never use Tor or Torbrowser

Many thanks for all this information, onpon4.

I thought there was still some problem with the Allwinner A20 but that
rhombus-tech had solved it on their own board (the people behind
https://www.crowdsupply.com/eoma68/micro-desktop.

>the Allwinner A20 is one of the best SoCs for libre software today
That’s what I read on the Freedombox wiki, and I’d like to have a go but
now you’ve made me aware of eoma68/rhombus-tech, well, I think I’d better
wait for mass sale, if that happens.

Reading that page and the rhombus-tech pages, I was under the impression,
this board was made up of smaller modules you could simply unswitch. I was
wrong, then.

You buy the board, you can buy or make a little box for the board. That’s
it. Or you can buy the board inside a laptop, and you keep the laptop case,
keyboard and screen for ever and simply change the board, which is a good
thing.

When you have a desktop computer, you usually keep your keyboard, mouse,
case, and ethernet card (I have one that’s not an onboard one, because the
onboard one is flaky), and sometimes, you can keep some other components or
cards. I assembled our computers, so I try not to throw away components and
re-use them.

Storage is a bit of a headache, with these boards. You need 2.5" hard drive
disks which are expensive or 3.5" HDD in a case, which is also an expensive
solution. I have 3.5" spare HDD but the problem is to connect them to the USB

So apart from the usb ethernet adapter,is it like the
https://www.olimex.com/Products/OLinuXino/A20/A20-OLinuXIno-LIME2 whose price
is before VAT, unfortunately — this becomes clear if you read the
information about how to order.
Yet, I’m not sure about USB ethernet. The Raspberry Pi has an onboard one
and I read it isn’t very good.

As for the computer for my friends, I’ll wait until they’ve bought their
new camera, and then see what they really need to view their pictures on a
light DE, like LXDE or even JWM. Perhaps oldish components will do.

Cheers,

Assuming they already have PSU, case etc.. that would cost around 50€ with
2x2GB and a decent E8400 Core 2 Duo.

Works perfectly with Trisquel, Debian etc.. That's what I use.

[Trisquel-users] New to Trisquel - Audio is flickering between speaker and audio jack

2017-02-07 Thread dirkzuechner

Dear Trisquel Friends,

I had installed trisquel and loved the speed of this libre distro.

But I experienced an error which I had long time ago with Debian and it is
that the audio junos back and forward between audio jack and speaker on my
laptop.

PAVU Control couldn't help either as the audi output jumps every where.

For now I am back to Lubuntu, but would love to get trisquel running and give
it another chance.

Any idea how to fix the audio problem?

Also, I couldn't find ice-weasel and without ice-weasel I don't know where to
use my lastpass addon working. Midori doesn't support lastpass.

Thanks for every help

Dirk

[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 - Can't install xfce

2017-02-07 Thread jbahn
I am running an instance of Flidas on a T60 (32bit). I want to change from
Mate to xfce.

So far I have un-installed Mate DE by this command:
sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove mate-desktop

Strange thing no 1: When logging out I still have the option to choose MATE.
It takes be to a 'dead' view at the Trisquel wallpaper.

Strange thing no 2: When running Synaptic and trying to mark xfce4 for
installation, I get the message, that a bunch of dependencies can not be met
and that I should ensure they can.

Only, I don't know how to solve this situation - if it can be solved (i.e.
has this something to do with Flidas being alpha?).

Help appreciated.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Hardware: cheap Intel config?

2017-02-07 Thread onpon4
> Reading that page and the rhombus-tech pages, I was under the impression,
this board was made up of smaller modules you could simply unswitch. I was
wrong, then.

It's inaccurate to think of a computer card as a "board". It's more like a
cartridge. In fact, it's very similar to a PCMCIA card since PCMCIA card
cases are being re-used. It's contained in protective casing and based on a
strict standard. That makes it much easier for users to change and upgrade.

So there are two components: the computer card (which contains the SoC), and
the housing (which contains all your interfaces). Different housings can have
different sets of interfaces; the micro-desktop just has VGA and USB ports so
you can hook it up to peripherals and use it like a desktop computer. The
laptop has a screen, keyboard, "touchpad" (actually a small capacitive
touchscreen), a battery, and USB ports. Different housings might have other
sets of interfaces; there's a handheld game console someone is working on,
for example.

But the point is, you separate the SoC from the interfaces. That way, you can
use the same computer in multiple forms, and upgrading your computer is much
cheaper and less wasteful.

This is less noticeable for desktop computers, but it does have an effect
there, too. Desktop computers' motherboards are limited in terms of what they
can accept. Eventually, you have to replace the motherboard to upgrade the
CPU or RAM. However, any EOMA68 computer card will work in any EOMA68 housing
it can fit into, so it won't have this problem with EOMA68. You can even
flip-flop between architectures in your upgrades if you want to.

> So apart from the usb ethernet adapter,is it like the
https://www.olimex.com/Products/OLinuXino/A20/A20-OLinuXIno-LIME2

No, not at all. What you linked to is just a single-board computer. The A20
computer card can be used like that (it's an extra feature of that particular
computer card), but the primary way you use it and other EOMA68 computer
cards is by plugging it into EOMA68 housings.

Absolutely! You can sandbox anything, and I mean ANYTHING with firejail. You
can write your own profile but unless you are very good at it, I recommend

[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel compatible USB nano wireless

2017-02-07 Thread lcerf
Wifi cards require firmware, i.e., code executed on the card's processor (not
on the main processor). Every Wifi chipset needs a different firmware.
Nowadays, this firmware usually is in the kernel and uploaded to the Wifi
card. Like any software, this firmware ought to be free. Unfortunately,
Linus Torvalds accepts proprietary firmware (blobs) in Linux. As a
consequence, constructors seize the opportunity to abuse users. It even is
probable that such blobs include malware. Spyware for instance. Of course,
the Trisquel project rejects proprietary firmware and the kernels it
distributes do not include these blobs. The related chipsets do not work.

Nowadays, only a few Wifi chipsets have free firmware. AR9170, AR9270 and
AR9271 are the ones you may encounter. The firmware named "ath9k_htc"
supports them. It was freed thanks to Chris' advocacy (Trisquel user and
ThinkPenguin's CEO). So the situation is worse than
"almost-everything-except-Atheros" fails to work in freedom because not all
Atheros chipsets have free firmware.

To make things worse, it is hard to know the chipset a model has.
Constructors do not write it on the wrapping... because they sometimes change
it, i.e., a Wifi card may work when another card of the same model (but
produced earlier or later) may not. So, either you acquire a card that has
been recently said to work in freedom (like Diomede's) and hope that the
chipset has not changed since then (the risk is little but exists) or you buy
from http://libre.thinkpenguin.com or http://tehnoetic.com (the only two
vendors that guarantee that their hardware works in complete freedom). The
second-hand market is a possibility too. If the vendor indicates the
chipset, for instance by showing the output of 'lsusb'.

By tomorrow, you may find the model Diomede suggests in a physical store.
You can bet on the TL-WN722N by TP-LINK too.
https://trisquel.info/forum/moving-trisquel indicates it included the AR9271
chipset in December. I bought four or five cards of that model years ago (it
had the same chipset). In this way, I can give/sell some to users of
computers I free with Trisquel.

Your card should work. Indeed the very same fact you are able to "scan" for
networks means the card works AFAIK. I had this behavior with a card once in
Debian and the solution for me was to not write the password when the popup
window requesting for it came out but instead add in in
network-manager-gnome. Just right click the icon in your tray in the panel,
then select "edit connections" - "wifi security", write the psswd there and
retry.

There is LyX that inkoia mentioned here that follows a WYSIWYM ("what you see
is what you mean") approach, where what shows up on the screen is an
approximation of what will show up on the page.

You can always open a text editor in one half of the screen and the document
viewer in the other half. GNOME's Document Viewer automatically reloads the
document when it is modified. With GNOME 3's window manager, just drag the
window to left/right border of the screen (and there are keyboard shortcuts
too) so that it takes half of the screen. I do not know if it is that simple
with other window manager.

Emacs can display PDF too. And it can vertically splits its window with C-x
3, so that the .tex is opened in the left buffer (with the default LaTeX mode
or AUCTeX) and the DVI in the right one. The DVI can automatically reload
the file when modified. Just add this line in ~/.emacs:

(add-hook 'doc-view-mode-hook 'auto-revert-mode)

I don't administrate an offline Trisquel, what I want is an updated Live USB
that:

1) has the latest security updates installed before going online.
2) has software packages added that aren't bundled with the default ISO.

I want those things so that:

a) I can install on multiple machines, knowing they are running identical
software, without having to download multiple times.

b) I have a Live USB distro that effectively demonstrates Free Software.

The offline install route seemed simpler than the ISO update method. The
signature file side of apt-offline adds complexity which is only necessary
when working with different base installs, which isn't the case here.

Truthfully though it was an incomplete explanation.

sadly though, only a small remnant of religious people seem to understand
what religion was meant for, freeing oneself from the curse of darkness.

you cannot tell me you never have bad thoughts that you don't wish you never
acted on. that is part of the curse of darkness.

ie, sin.

as for free software, it was invented probably to fight what you call
religion which is in actuality a falsehood of religion

real religion requires people loving each other in spite of their faults not
condemning them and oppressing them. now do I think this is rare? if you had
asked that I would have to say, very much so.

Free software in my opinion has similar ethics to what i quote call "real
religion"

I agree that free software is about ethics but I disagree that religion isn't
about ethics.

I think some humans just choose to sometimes abuse everything they touch

that may be why you think religion is evil.

love does not force is a huge theme of real religion...

I don't believe in your false idea of what religion is. I don't wish to rake
you over the coals so I will just say, to each to his own and enjoy your

and live an abundant life of happiness.

and yes I do make mistakes sometimes, but I try and that is what is
