Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo Ups Ante: Gives $300K to ‘Raise the Standard of Trust
OK, here's a citation. www.muktware.com/articles/3058/duckduckgo-doesnt-show-leading-open-source-projects-google-does http://www.youtube.com/embed/jtR6bFS1KPs If you can't load the article directly, there's a copy at the Internet Archive. I tried a few searches myself and got similar results. That does not prove malice on DDG's part, but it does show you that you can't trust them to get things right. Microsoft is so malicious that it is folly, if not intentional malice, to pass them on the way DDG does. If the only way to protect your privacy is to go through a proxy, why is DDG given preferential treatment? Doesn't that mean their promise is meaningless even if they had the technical competence and legal framework required to keep it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo Ups Ante: Gives $300K to ‘Raise the Standard of Trust
> DDG hides free software results like Bing does We went over this years ago. DDG gets its search results from several different sources and mixes them together. We don't know exactly how this works (since DDG's backend hasn't been released), but there is no evidence of DDG's results being censored, irrespective of whether or not Bing does so. > People have documented DDG hiding free software results in the same way Bing does. Citation needed. > A company that does these things can not be trusted to protect your privacy. No company can be trusted with your privacy. What's your point? It has nothing to do with charity work. For searching, the only way to ensure your privacy is to go through a proxy (e.g. Tor). Everyone should do this. You could say that DuckDuckGo is not any better than Google (except to the extent that you like its search results better), but there's no evidence that it's any worse.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What computers do fsf have?
Try https://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/ and http://h-node.org/ The FSF has moved to respects your freedom certified hardware for desktops. That means the hardware is free from the firmware and up, and uses a GNU endorsed operating system like Trisquel. At last year's LibrePlanet, I mostly saw X60 laptops on thier desks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo Ups Ante: Gives $300K to ‘Raise the Standard of Trust
DDG hides free software results like and sends adverting money to Microsoft. DDG dillutes search results with Microsoft's free software hostile, filtered copy of Google results. People have documented DDG hiding free software results in the same way Bing does. You pay for that service through advertising. A company that does these things can not be trusted to protect your privacy. I provide links to these and other claims in my write up, mentioned above.

Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo Ups Ante: Gives $300K to ‘Raise the Standard of Trust
Interesting point...
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo Ups Ante: Gives $300K to ‘Raise the Standard of Trust
I'm sorry, but I do not trust Duck Duck Go. This is mostly becuase they use Bing for search results and have scrutinized Google without critisizing Microsoft. I detail this and other problems here, http://50.81.205.197/photo_album/chron/desktop/opinion/2013_06_21-avoid_duck_duck_go/ If any of those problems have been corrected, I'd like to know.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Second monitor with WindowMaker
Have you tried Arandr? It's a GUI front end to xrandr that gives you both drag and drop monitor manipulation and a command line that you can use to write your own scripts. I use it with Enlightenment, on Debian and GNewSense but I see that it's also packaged for Trisquel. I've also used Krandrtray and a much older version of Gnome's randr front end and, and have probably done so with Window Maker, so I'm not sure why this is not working for you. The only thing that's tricky about Arandr, and GUI managers in general, is that you have to drag a monitor around to see the second monitor under it. Arandr starts up with the two monitors in the same place so one might hide the other. Krandrtray does not have this problem but you have to right click your way into things to activate the external screen. A prior forum post, https://trisquel.info/en/forum/adding-3rd-monitor A page with links to some of my own use of external monitors, http://50.81.205.197/photo_album/chron/desktop/external_monitors.html I'd like to see some screenshots of your success or failure. Best wishes and happy hacking.
Re: [Trisquel-users] User rights
It only takes one different UID to throw you off. :) I prefer to use FAT where it is sufficient (i.e. you don't need to store big files), and NTFS otherwise. Much simpler.
Re: [Trisquel-users] User rights
Not "disk ID", the owner(s) of the files and directories. You'll find this out by right-clicking on a file and choosing "Properties", then going to the "Permissions" tab. You'll also be able to use root here to change the owner, or you can more simply use the "chown" command.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cinnamon - again
Hmm, Trisquel doesn't have it? Had no idea. Well, the easy way, if you are ok with running a non endorsed but libre distro is you download the Debian Cinnamon ISO. http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/bt-hybrid/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Second monitor with WindowMaker
What is the expected behavior that you want exactly? For example, I don't have another monitor, but I see that some people might want one of these behaviors: a. Only one user involved. Half of the screen in first monitor, and second half on the other, so that when the mouse or something else reaches the edge of one of the screens, the other displayes the reminder of the object. b. Only one user involved. Each monitor with it's own desktop space (no object splitting). c. Two users involved. Each monitor for each user.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install GCC 6.3 on trisquel 7
I'm not sure how GNOME works, but perhaps we must restart your current user seesion for the icons to take effect. Simply go to the applications menu (the one with Trisquel logo), and go to "close/end session" this will close all your current applications, so make sure to save things or to have your documents edited through applications like GNU Screen and GNU Emacs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cinnamon - again
I do not contribute, but in my personal experience I learned that one should never exchange the functionality for the beauty of anything. I tried many DE, but I can't stay long away from MATE. If you like cinnamon, you might as well continue to use it. If you really want to take a dip in some other DE, you might as well go for it. Not looking back.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Second monitor with WindowMaker
Can you post the output of xrandr --query when you're in Window Maker with the second monitor attached?
[Trisquel-users] Second monitor with WindowMaker
Hello, I usually use WindowMaker that was installed on my computer with one monitor. Recently I bought a second monitor and the add it on my configuration. There is no problem with trisquel window manager but with wmaker the second monitor is black. I tried to set up via display in gnome-control-center without success. Can you help me, any idea ? Also I explained my problem on Freenode #windowmaker with xrandr --query as solution but nothing happends. I'm surprised because I tried on debian jessy and it works. Thanks for your answers.
[Trisquel-users] Cinnamon - again
I used to use Cinnamon DE but for now I'm trying out xfce. It's pretty ok but I just miss Cinnamon. I'm also using Mate - just to get used to it, when Trisquel 8 goes beta. But it just isn't the same. I would really like Cinnamon DE on my Trisquel. I know I can just add a ppa and install from that, but I would really like to ensure that I can keep trusting the software and I'm dreaming of Cinnamon DE as a package in the Trisquel repository. I have no near the knowledge necessary to do whatever is needed for this. Is there anybody out there who can help - at least to begin the project of preparing Cinnamon for Trisquel? Of course I would like to contribute in some way. On my bleeding knees...
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install GCC 6.3 on trisquel 7
ADFENO, thank you for those instructions, here is a summary of what I did. My install of Flidas did not have a .local/share/icons directory so I added the step to make it. **Installing brasero via guix package with goal of getting it into the main menu.** cd ~/.local/share mkdir icons guix package -i adwaita-icon-theme guix package -i hicolor-icon-theme cd icons ln -s "../../../.guix-profile/share/icons/Adwaita" ln -s "../../../.guix-profile/share/icons/hicolor" guix package -i brasero cd ~/.local/share/applications ln -s "../../../.guix-profile/share/applications/brasero.desktop" After these steps I saw an entry for Brasero in the 'Sound and Video' section of Main Menu but the icon was generic. It sort of looks like a square piece of black film with the lower right corner curled up. I used doolio's tip: Control Center > Main Menu > Sound and Video > Brasero > (left click) Properties > and click on the icon upper right corner > and navigated to ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/brasero.png > Open and the icon showed up in the Control Center > Main Menu dialog. It did not show up in the actual Main Menu but after I rebooted, it was there. And clicking on it brings up Brasero so all is good for Brasero. It seems like Control Center > Appearance should list the Adwaita Theme but it does not. It seems like selection of an appropriate icon should be automatic (and now after a reboot maybe it will be, I'll look for another package from the guix packages to install). Thanks again for you guidance, it has been a big help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] User rights
I so often have experiences like this. I have never thought of the user id thing, so I'll check, though I hardly think so Most of my machines run Trisquel, which will all assign the same user ids since I set them up in the same fashion. For work I use Mint but as I recall they provide the same standard user ids (numbers) If you reach reliable answers and/or procedures, please let us know
[Trisquel-users] How can I make a dot desktop file for Enlightenment Version 1.0x (AKA DR16 or E16)?
I recently made E16 work on Trisquel but I can't make it start from a display manager. I copied an existing desktop file in /usr/share/xsessions and pointed to the enlightenment binary but choosing it from the pulldown menu just gives me a blank screen. I can make E16 start by leaving the screen blank and launching the command from a virtual console. Anyone who's interested can find details here, http://50.81.205.197/photo_album/chron/2017/2017_02_03-trisquel_e16_gnome/

Not to my knowledge but they should not be that hard to find second hand
Re: [Trisquel-users] User rights
Ok first simple test : a non-encrypted drive in ext4 which I can't safely remove (With Nautilus) on my install (not authorized to perform operation). Yet on a normal Trisquel install, while I have to force the action since it says the drive is busy, it just works. The disk ID is a weird format like 0x00randomchars (different from the internal disk and it's LUKS partitions), whereas my user ID is four numbers. But you know what, I just tested it on a Debian netinstall, it works also. It's probably a faulty install, it's probably easier to start over. Plus it's a clue that it's not a HDD issue (gotta test further though).
Re: [Trisquel-users] User rights
Oh right, I can see the double-meaning now. Well, thankfully free-software takes care of what you mean.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Do you play games with a libre engine but proprietary data? Any advice? What are some of the ethical pitfall?
if we're still talking about using another Windows PC strictly for gaming, to me it's not only more complicated, it also uses more resources (VM), and I really don't see any benefit. If the cam and mic are your concern, I'd rather tape some paper on the cam, and some tissue on the mic to dampen the sound. You can even test the results. But again, that's an extreme solution for someone who REALLY can't live without PC proprietary games (which isn't my case at all). It allows to give a minimum of personal information (the games you play, the people you play with, your credit card andrelated data like name/adress, but not much beyond that if you treat it like a console. That's assuming there's another PC would run a libre OS exclusively. Of course it has a cost. But if I had to do it, I'd do it that way.

Re: [Trisquel-users] New to Trisquel - Audio is flickering between speaker and audio jack
Hmm, I hear you can import the csv into keepass2, then you can export that one into keepassX. A pain in the bottom but doable, if so.
Re: [Trisquel-users] webmail services
well, we all are smart in few things and dumb in many others, sure. But even a computer illiterate, the one that only knows to read English, point and click with a mouse and can remember two instructions, can learn how to use it in, well, let's say 15 minutes :) I'm not talking about learning gpg, how it works, the best practices to employ, etc What I'm talking about is the very basic usage. The GUI is so clear and intuitive I really think anyone can catch up with it very quickly. It doesn't take a deep knowledge of gpg to use it correctly - all one needs to do is create a key pair (via GUI), select encrypt (via GUI), click on an encrypted mail and insert the passphrase to decrypt it. Or am I wrong? I haven't used enigmail in a long while but I remember it as an extremely easy to use and clear GUI. If a contact of yours has issues with it, why don't you send them a tiny guide. I recommend you don't send them a link for a website, but instead try to write one and make it as brief and clear (as if they were 5).
Re: [Trisquel-users] New to Trisquel - Audio is flickering between speaker and audio jack
I used/use Lastpass for quite sometime and I looked in KeePassX but it can not import the lastpass csv file. So, it is useless if you come from LastPass.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New to Trisquel - Audio is flickering between speaker and audio jack
Yes, this problem was known for me a long time ago with Debian and then never came back until now with Trisquel. By the way, I always have to reset my password, it never ever works to login a 2nd time (at the forum).

If you don't mind me asking, is there any particular reason you or your wife want an alternative to GMail? I don't as such, but what is the story of and about your nick?
Re: [Trisquel-users] webmail services
Anything is better than a google service as far as privacy I agree Enigmail with icedove takes 5 minutes to understand and employ, even for absolute computer illiterates I do not agree Being an itiot - or computer illiterate as you put it - I know for a fact that things are not as easy as you formulate it here. I have spend hours and hours on trying to figure it out - an I'm not done yet. Furthermore, most people just can not live without web mail! I think I'll give mailvelope a shot once, to see if it's something to introduce to web mail addicts.
Re: [Trisquel-users] webmail services
Thanks. I might give it go then.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install GCC 6.3 on trisquel 7
I forgot to continue writting: In this later case of misbehaving .desktop file, it's often needed to *copy* the .desktop file that is made available in the Guix profile of the current user, and modify it for your needes. When done, perhaps you can send a git/unified patch to Guix project so that they apply your modifications (and you also get the chance to put your copyright holder line in the relevant files, so you can participate in some decision making and license compliance enforcement in the future, if you so desire).
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install GCC 6.3 on trisquel 7
* Why somethings are missing? Guix is managed *per-user* , so one must do most things per-user depending on what must be done. Of course, somethings aren't needed, e.g.: Installing graphical programs or icon themes for root user (because root user doesn't really use these that much). * Regarding missing icons Install "adwaita-icon-theme" and "hicolor-icon-theme" from Guix, then make a symbolic link to the resulting "Adwaita" and "hicolor" directories (that are inside the user's Guix profile), like so: (Note: remember to use `ln` with the `-s`/`--symbolic` option, and keep paths relative so that things are easier to move around to other computers or users, that is, remember to use the the triple "../" shown here). $ cd ".local/share/icons" $ ln -s "../../../.guix-profile/share/icons/Adwaita" $ ln -s "../../../.guix-profile/share/icons/hicolor" * Missing application launchers in the menu After installing an application, their .desktop files (application launchers) are available in "$GUIX_PROFILE/share/applications". For example, suppose I just installed GnuCash and Icecat for my current user, then I do: $ cd ".local/share/applications" $ ln -s "../../../.guix-profile/share/applications/gnucash.desktop" $ ln -s "../../../.guix-profile/share/applications/icecat.desktop" Some applications still don't have the .desktop file, or it's not doing all that it's supposed to do (e.g.: *Suppose* VLC doesn't appear in the "Open with" right-mouse menu when clicking on some files, then this might be an issue with the vlc.desktop file, or with your user's "mime"* files in the same directory (".local/share/applications") or in "/usr/share/applications", or in some other place people knowledgeable of customization might have to englighten us. ;)
