In the context of a search engine, we're talking about a service that does
not do your computing for you; this is not SaaSS (Service as a Software

that service's owners but not the users.

That won't happen. Trisquel uses what Ubuntu uses. There is no reason to
expend extra effort to use a worse init system that isn't fully supported

RMS doesn't care about systemd. It's libre, and that's all that matters.

RMS also doesn't have a problem with DDG. In fact, it's his primary search

Running off users is a curious goal for a free software project, onpon4, but
you won't get rid of me that easily. I trust the community to solve systemd

At this point, I don't have much more to say to you. I gave you the chance

Well, yes, that's what I do because I want good free software results. There
may not be much difference in the privacy, but DDG has hidden important free
software projects from users the same way Microsoft's search engine does.
DDG is foolish enough to use Bing in some kind of secret mixing algorithm and
either lacks the technical competence to protect the quality of their search
results, or is a willing Microsoft partner. I don't pretend this is the best
way to search but it's not the worst.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Development of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas" Software proposal by category : Internet

2017-02-23 Thread leoo
For email clients, I would vote for Evolution. Since LibreOffice
unfortunately lacks an Outlook equivalent, users have to look elsewhere for
that. Evolution fits the bill nearly perfectly, handling email, but also
contacts, calendar, tasks, and some basic note-taking functions, together
with being able to handle scheduling on a network. Remember that Trisquel is
intended for small business as well as individual home users.

Furthermore, Trisquel's default UI look and feel is meant to be familiar for
novices and first time users coming from Windows. And similarly, Evolution
closely matches Outlook's user interface.

If there's anything I would change in Evolution, it's the name, in keeping
with my longtime gripe about free software projects making poor choices in
their names and/or logos. While the Evolution logo is fine, the name, while
not being as extremely bad as Iceweasel or Claws Mail, is still not as good
as it could be. Yes, "Evolution" as a name can be defended on the grounds
that it implies that it is being continuously improved upon, or that it is
better than other programs. However, it does not convey what the program
does, and also introduces an unnecessarily distracting and divisive element:
the evolution vs. creation controversy.

I hasten to state that I ACCEPT the scientific mainstream on evolution AND DO
NOT agree with creationism. PLEASE DO NOT waste everyone's time by
denigrating me on the assumption that I'm a creationist, or by denigrating /
dismissing creationists or posting refutations of creationism.

But advocates should not underestimate the importance of this issue. Gallup
polling in the USA
http://www.gallup.com/poll/21814/evolution-creationism-intelligent-design.aspx
shows that by far the biggest portion of US public opinion on this issue
continues to believe that "God created humans in their present form" - a
plurality of 42%, and has never been lower than this number. The next
position, that "Humans evolved, with God guiding the process", is far behind
at 31%. The idea that humans evolved, with God having no part in the
process, is a tiny minority at 19%.

My point is that regardless of how true evolution is and how wrong
creationism is, and even granting that this is an important issue to debate
and win on, the name of an Outlook-equivalent computer program is an
inappropriate place to make that case, and also constitutes an entirely
unnecessary self-imposed barrier to the adoption of this program specifically
and even free software in general.

Since one of the great benefits of freedom is the ability to just copy a
program and change an aspect of it, even something as small as the name, I
propose doing the same with the Trisquel version of Evolution. Call it
"Overview", which is similar to "Outlook" and which would, like "Outlook",
refer to a feature within the program where you can get an Outlook or
Overview of your entire day, such as the most recent or important emails, and
your upcoming tasks and schedule items. It still doesn't directly inform the
viewer what it does, but the alliteration between "Outlook" and "Overview",
plus the logo of an envelope and clock, will provide some big hints.

Re: [Trisquel-users] editing multiple photos in the same way

2017-02-23 Thread Adonay Felipe Nogueira
As Magic Banana pointed out, G'MIC might be a good idea to try, also,
ImageMagic is also a great tool for the job.

Note 1: The example given in the end of this comment will replace the
existing images, so make sure to have backups. I could make a more
elaborated example, at the cost of losing easy understanding.

Note 2: My copy of ImageMagick came from Guix package manager, not from
Trisquel 7's repositories, so there might be differences in the
result. Specially because I was forced to upgrade my ImageMagick because
I needed to work with .jpg images which had embeded color profiles.

Note 3: Please replace the lines starting with "/home/adfeno" to the
full/absolute path to the images that you want to edit. This can be done
by selecting all of then in file manager (default for Trisquel is
Nautilus), copying them, pasting in a text editor, and this should give
the paths you want to copy again and paste in the area I just described.

I'll first describe what the `convert` command options do, and then I'll
give you the actual script.

Description:

`-auto-orient` attempts to read EXIF orientation tag from the image
file, and respects it. The resulting image will not have such EXIF tag,
but will still be corrected. This avoids having images in the wrong
orientation.

`-colorspace "Gray"` converts from the image's color space to a generic
grayscale color space. Note that, if the input image depends on a more
complex color space (like the CMYK madness, for which even conversion
between the exact CMYK profile results in distortion), and if you want
the resulting image to use RGB color (the color used by the
monitor/display you are using to read this now), you must place
`-profile [Path to desired RGB color profile file]` before `-colorspace`
line. For the sake of completeness, in the case of Trisquel 7, the path
for the color profile of your current monitor/display can be obtained
using the following command:

$ colormgr get-devices-by-kind "display"

And to check if the images have embeded color profiles (and which color
space/standard they represent), use:

$ identify -verbose "[Path to image file]"

To find the color space, look for the topmost "Colorspace" line. To find
out if the color profiles are embeded, look for the topmost "Profiles"
line (this line has others inside). If the color space is CMYK, then the
profiles *must* exist, otherwise the photocopy effect might produce
non-grayscale or bad results.

Now, continuing with the main explaination:

`+clone` clones the last generated image (the one resuting from setting
the image as grayscale only) to the set of current operations (which are
limited between "\(" and "\)").

`-blur "0x2"` blurs the image slightly. Particularly, I find this value
to produce a result more closer to a photocopy than the one produced by
the values suggested by my copy of GIMP.

`+swap` swaps the the last two images in the sequence (this should put
the grayscale image behind the original one).

`-compose "DivideDst"` uses the mathematical compose method called
"DivideDst" which is, like all mathematical compose methods, greyscale,
and simply attempts to divide the uppermost image in the sequence by the
previous image in the sequence. This means, for example, that: If the
grayscale (previous image) has a color understood to be similar to zero,
that part of the uppoermost image is ignored. With older versions of
ImageMagick, the "DivideDst" is called "divide".

`-composite` actually generates the image that resulted from all
operations so far. This makes a new image available in the sequence.

`-linear-stretch "5%x0%"` does some color stretches. Particularly, I
find this value to produce a result more closer to a photocopy than the
one produced by the values suggested by my copy of GIMP.

`-scale [Geometry]` scales the topmost image (no enclosing "\(" or
"\)") but *keeps* aspect ratio (avoids "fat" or "tin" effects on
images). If you do want to force the geometry of 1000x1333, then use
"1000x1333!" instead (notice the exclamation mark).

Actual script:

while read -r each_original_image; do
  convert "$each_original_image" \
  -auto-orient \
  -colorspace "Gray" \
  \( +clone -blur "0x2" \) \
  +swap \
  -compose "DivideDst" \
  -composite \
  -linear-stretch "5%x0%" \
  -scale "1000x1333" \
  "${each_original_image}"
done <

Elaborating further on my previous response, I think Claws Mail also has an
unnecessarily strange and off-putting name and logo.

Claws are sharp instruments of imposing harm. In everyday speech, the word
when applied to people is harshly negative: "Get your claws off my such and
such." Having and using claws not only imparts characteristics like
aggression, but is also dehumanizing. Why would anyone want to apply such
things to himself?

And then the logo. http://www.claws-mail.org/img/sc-bar-right.png

A green, reptilian foot or hand bursting out from within a globe to grab some
mail envelopes. Humans tend to be repelled by reptiles. And since the claws
have done harm to the world in the picture, they were a sinister force
lurking from within it before they emerged. Their grasp on the envelopes
also seems to be aggressive, as if they are seizing someone else's mail.

Finally, as if all that weren't enough, the official Claws Project website
has this already-terrible logo over an even worse slogan or motto: "it
bites!" Directly implying aggression and harm in any language, and in
colloquial American English, also specifically implies that the product in
question is of very bad quality!

WHY do free software projects do this to themselves, and to the free software
movement in general?!?

At this point, discussion of Claws' limitations like inability to write HTML
email, is superfluous.

software. They are pure HTML. And accessing the results of a search query
is not Service as a Software Substitute (SaaSS):

Services such as search engines collect data from around the web and let you
examine it. Looking through their collection of data isn't your own computing
in the usual sense—you didn't provide that collection—so using such a
service to search the web is not SaaSS. However, using someone else's server
to implement a search facility for your own site is SaaSS.

The server-side code being free or not has no consequence on the visitor's
freedom (it has consequences on the service owner's freedoms, her business).
And the user cannot know the code that really runs on the server-side. She
has to trust the service provider. Or crawl the Web herself. Or
collaboratively (Seeks/YaCy). But what a waste of energy! As in "more power
plants" if most users start to crawl the Web themselves.
