Re: [Trisquel-users] Paypal is totally out of my circle of confidence, ebay might come to be.
Or rather, Ebay owns PayPal. If I'm not mistaken, PayPal was started specifically as something for Ebay to use. In any case, this is definitely an off-topic thing, so it should really be in the Troll Lounge
Re: [Trisquel-users] BIOS firmware on ARM
Depend on ARM chip but if you talking for dev boards AMlogic or Rockchip or Allwiner then yes. I think big problem is now in sofware cos if we talking for security linux kernel is very big and very small number of people can understand it even is open source.
[Trisquel-users] BIOS firmware on ARM
Intel have ME,AMD have PSP,what does the ARM have and how much depends on its architecture type and vendor? This is not clear to me,as i could see most of their BIOS are short and do not have many options like on x86 and/or its not made to be accessed on such way. Can someone explain me this thematics, for example would i be more secure with newest AMlogic or Rockchip or Allwiner and similar boards(CPU/GPU) rather than newest intel/amd chipesets? Regards and have a nice day.
[Trisquel-users] weird output during boot with linux-libre 4.9
Hey everyone. I am using jxself's PPA to get linux libre 4.9 LTS, on my Trisquel 7. Previously when I was using 3.4 I would get no output during boot, it was fast and the only stuff appearing on the screen was asking for my password (full disk encryption). Ever since updating to 4.9, it appears a lot of messages about the missing free firmware (related to my GPU I believe, which is ok, I don't use the non-free firmware) and some messages about "ata2 softreset failed". Or something like that. It also takes a lot more time to boot. About 15 seconds longer than before. Should I worry or is there I can do to put it fast like before? Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Question about Free GNU/Linux distributions
Linux=component for an operating system (not necessary must to be GNU)(Linux it is not a program of GNU project) GNU=operating system https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system HURD=GNU Project program (kernel)(this kernel supposed to be GNU's kernel)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Question about Free GNU/Linux distributions
You can play any game if you have Nvidia's Kepler card, gtx770 and gt730 with gddr5 are fine. You just reclock a Kepler card manually and play. Those card are working with fully free operating system, blobless.

The ebay picture to prove what I said... The one back apparently is not available. Thanks again
[Trisquel-users] Paypal is totally out of my circle of confidence, ebay might come to be.
First of all a big hello to this wonderful community, fighters for the freedom and some justice in this vast cynical world: a big hug with love to all. Second, I am a little bit in rage mode, and third, English is not my mother tong, so I might commit some errors expressing myself an this two last factors may have some influence in it. So let me say for me paypal=garbage. I am tired of the dishonest behaviour of them, so I exclude them totally of my white list so for me paypal is totally equal to sh*t. But enough talking, lets support my saying with some facts. First, in the past when I had an account, when I had a problem with some item that I bought on ebay the reffund was going directly to my account. Some time after the refund would go to the paypal account, and no matter what I did, I can't redeem it to my bank account. But ok I give them a pass on that... Them some time after they ask to Withdraw money from my account in order to certify my card, and said that they will give the money back if I give them back some 4 digit code that appears on the transaction. I agree, and guess what: they send me not a 4-digit code but a 3 digit (see atachment!). That was the drop of water for me, they stole me 1.50€, and OK I closed my account immediately. They never ask me why I was leaving or why I take that decision, nothing! And I was with paypal doing purchases on ebay mostly by almost 3 years. Great! Then I started purchasing on ebay by using my debit card directly, no problem so far until 3 days ago. I bought an hdd by the price 19.34 and in my bank account was withdrawn 20.14. I call the bank and they said that PAYPAL has withdrawn the 20.14€. Paypal again? I become to realyze that paypal always has a part on the process of doing purchases on ebay, always, even if it is with your direct debit card! So I send this message to ebay (I totally refuse to talk with paypal!): "I have this problem: I bought an item recently in the value of 19.34€, but in my bank account I was withdraw 20.14€. I had call to the bank and the bank said that paypal has discounted that value in my account and that I could make a police case if I want to. 1 I had bad experiences with paypal after, and I recently close my paypal account for that matters, and starting paying the items I purchase with my debit card directly. Now I come to realize that paypal still have a part on the process of me buying on ebay! I am not pleased with that! It's not by the value per se but buy the attitude: I'd like to have my questions above clarified and I would like to have the money difference (0.80€) in my account, please. More: I will not talk to paypal, they want they call me. Thank you very much, I will looking forward for an answer." And I am waiting for an answer from their part. If they give me an unsatisfactory response I will end up right away with ebay! I simply can not deal with a person that is primary partner is a total dishonest guy, I exclude both! I am furious with them, and obviously it is not by the values 'per se' it is the attitude. How can I trust making future purchases, if I don't have confident on them, I will never know the value that they will withdraw from me! Unacceptable! What is your experience with paypal, and ebay for that matters? where and how do you do your purchases? (see atachments, this is not small talk, I prove what I say.) Bye and best of the world for you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Question about Free GNU/Linux distributions
The libre driver is included in Linux (and Linux-libre), so you wouldn't have to install it. That driver is Nouveau, and the Nouveau website has a page documenting support for the various features of the cards: https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix/ In general, the standard advice if something doesn't work is to try the latest version of Linux-libre (jxself supplies one here). If that doesn't work, you'll have to wait a few years for Nouveau to catch up, remove it and use integrated graphics instead (good choice if you have an Intel CPU, not any use if you have an AMD CPU), or replace the card with an older model that Nouveau supports. By the way, regarding whether or not being a "product" exempts games from needing to be libre: if that were the case, that would exempt Windows, Microsoft Office, the various Adobe programs, etc. These are all considered to be "products", too. The simple fact is that just as they are proprietary software, proprietary games are proprietary software. I suggest you should never financially support proprietary game developers, and instead support development of libre games. You can do this by supporting crowdfunding campaigns (such as my recent campaign for Hexoshi), or by donating to projects/developers you like.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Question about Free GNU/Linux distributions
"But would it be possible to use my nvidia card with free drivers and still being able to run the 3d graphics when running a game?" It would depend what model of NVidia card you have you can check If it will work with free software here: https://h-node.org/ If you have the right model of GPU and its powerful enough then you definitely can run amazing 3D games like: https://play0ad.com/

I understand the difference now, someone sent a link with the explanation of the naming convention. On 2017-03-24 15:02, enduz...@riseup.net wrote: The op thinks that GNU/Linux = Libre. Re: [Trisquel-users] Question about Free GNU/Linux distributions
Ok that explains a lot. Thanks! I could have worded that last question differently, I wouldn't expect games to be free since they are a product. But would it be possible to use my nvidia card with free drivers and still being able to run the 3d graphics when running a game? Re: [Trisquel-users] Question about Free GNU/Linux distributions
That's a malformed question. Fedora is a GNU/Linux distro. What you mean to ask about is operating systems which are compliant with GNU FSDG. And the advantage is simple: none of the official channels of software distribution for these systems contain any proprietary software. That's the only advantage the FSF strives for. By the way, Fedora actually has a very clear policy which only allows proprietary firmware in its repository. You can blacklist these firmware blobs and replace Linux with Linux-libre in Fedora using a package called "Freed-ora": http://www.fsfla.org/ikiwiki/selibre/linux-libre/freed-ora.en.html Red Hat Enterprise Linux, by the way, has roughly the same policy as Fedora. I'm not entirely sure, but I think the "one exception" the FSF speaks of is to do with Red Hat trademarks. > would I be able to use alternative drivers to nvidia drivers so that I > still can play games under linux via steam or wine? Probably, but that would kind of defeat the purpose of using a completely libre OS.

[Trisquel-users] Question about Free GNU/Linux distributions
Hello All, I have a question about GNU/Linux distros, what's the advantage of using GNU/Linux distro over a distro like fedora/redhat? I use centos for servers I run, and fedora for my desktop machines. If I were to switch my desktop/laptops to a GNU/Linux distro(like trisquel or gnewsense) would I be able to use alternative drivers to nvidia drivers so that I still can play games under linux via steam or wine?
