I just tried the latest ISO on a friend's Mid 2012 MacBook Pro. I held "Option"
while starting up. The USB drive showed up as "Windows", which I selected and
was then able to boot into Trisquel with no problems.

It was the latest ISO, RC — release candidate.
There's a lot that could be said on both the topics in this comments.
I've started a new thread to discuss Mac-specific problems with Trisquel
here:

I've also started a new thread on the user respect issues with Etcher here:

Then a temporary workaround could be to install 16.04 and migrate to Trisquel 8.
What is the earlist Trisquel 8 ISO you've tested?

Ubuntu installs easily (17.10). Linux Mint 18.3 is as easy (my current
installation on my Macbook Air). They all show up as EFI Boot in the boot
manager. I use rEFInd to dual boot.
I believe that GrevenGull is using Trisquel 8 on a Mac, though maybe not from
the latest ISO.
I have some friends with Macs, including one who has successfully installed
Ubuntu. I'll see if someone will let me try booting into Trisquel.

Loldier and I have been discussing our ongoing struggles with getting a
Trisquel live disc (or USB) to boot on a Mac in the thread on the Flidas RCs.
That discussion thread starts here:

That's exactly how Perens and Eric S. Raymond started the schism. To not
"scare away".
I think it's pretty much obligatiry to start with the definition of free
libre as opposed to open source. They have many things in common but yeat
they are separate camps. It's a frequent misconception
It's just as accurate to say that Trisquel is "open source" as it is to say
it's "free software" (or as I prefer to say "free code software"). Let's not
scare the GNUbie away with internal politics and language policing (that can
come later ;)
You probably need a newer version of unar. It says it supports RARv5.
Trisquel is part of the free libre camp. Open sores is another camp. You
might want to read more about the fundamental difference between these
movements.

Thanks for all the help magic Banana & everyone else = very cool bananas.
Will get onto it shortly & let you know if successful. Really excited to use
this open source OS.
What IRC clients are popular amongst Trisquel users?
I have tried Pidgin, HexChat, and WeeChat.
Also, what is a good way to secure the connection? Using SSL?
Is it good practice to securely connect to IRC?
the command for unrar-free is
unrar x your_archive.rar
Maybe you can try Ark by KDE in Synaptic.
This is another archive manager.
But it can be the dependancie you use to open it. Unar or unrar-free. I don't
think Ark or Archive Manager have something to do with it.
Thanks for the hint, I just tried that: I uninstalled unrar-free via synaptic
and opened the RAR archive through the file manager. Unfortunately Archive
Manager cannot open the file.
I had this probleme before.
I don't know why, unar and unrar-free are incompatible once both installed on
Trisquel 7.
Uninstall only unrar-free from the command line or synaptic. Then, have a try
with Archive manager. It should work.
This has worked for me...
Is there a way to download images, checksums, etc of Trisquel 8 over https?
For now, all the links are plain, unencrypted http
p7zip doesn't work ("unknown suffix -- ignored"). Tried 7za then, but no
success here either ("Error: Can not open file as archive").
try installing p7zip from the repo's (it's commandline only I think).
I'm trying to unpack a RAR archive in Trisquel 7. I assume it is the current
RAR format version 5.
I'v tried both unrar-free and unar. The former reports back...
"unknown archive type, only plain RAR 2.0 supported(normal and solid
archives), SFX and Volumes are NOT supported!"
...while
I know xscreensaver is outdated, I will mention it to them. Though you can
too...
I'm s glad I don't deal with mainstream laptop manufacturers' nonsense
anymore...
From a DDG search, it looks like the key you need to press is F2, so just
shut the system off, then power it on, and keep pressing F2 until you see the
setup screen.
Another thing you could do is bring up the boot menu with F12 it looks like,
but it looks like you have to enable that in

You might want to look into Calligra, which is a libre Qt office suite.

For a GParted alternative, I found KDE Partition Manager. Not sure if you're
interested in KDE apps, though, since your
