[Trisquel-users] can't boot, problem possibly hard drive
Trisquel froze while compiling a program. Since I couldn't get the system to respond, I powered down. Upon attempting to boot, I get stuck with this message. ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 action 0x6 frozen ata1.00: ST_FIRST: DRQ=1weith device error, dev_stat 0x7F ata1.00: cmd a0/00:00:00:08:00/00:00:00:00:00:/a0 tag 0 pio 16392 in Get event status notification 4a 01 00 00 10 00 00 00 01 00res 74/74:74:74:74:74:/00:00:00:00:00:/74 Emask 0x3 (HSM violation) ata1.00: status { DRDY DF } ata1.00: revalidation failed (errno=-2) I've found a couple of threads with similar error messages in the context of not being able to boot. They were inconclusive but suggested that the hard drive is to blame. Perhaps powering down without unmounting could have screwed something up. I am able to boot into a Trisquel live USB, and access my file system from a live session, which makes me suspect that whatever might be wrong is at the OS level, as opposed to the hardware level. I don't know much about hardware though. Since I can back up my files from a live session, reinstalling Trisquel is an option if there's a chance that will help. Thanks.

If you want a solid desktop client (as opposed to a site like invidio.us) for watching YouTube videos, I highly recommend youtube-viewer. It comes with both a cli and GTK interface. Both are very straightforward and stable. https://github.com/trizen/youtube-viewer To install from the PPA, $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 $ sudo apt update $ sudo apt install youtube-viewer You can run the cli interface with 'youtube-viewer'. The graphical interface is 'gtk-youtube-viewer'. signature.asc Description: PGP signature

As much as I'd like a GNOME desktop on Trisquel, GNOME Videos is totally borked in Trisquel 8. That's a deal-breaker for me, since I use it to watch YouTube.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to completely replace MATE with GNOME?
> sudo apt purge trisquel I have removed 'trisquel' and still have the MATE desktop. The only difference between 'purge' and 'remove' is that purge removes config files, so that shouldn't remove MATE either. $ sudo apt install mate-desktop followed by $ sudo apt autoremove might do it. signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to completely replace MATE with GNOME?
I'm also interested in doing this. I'm thinking i should be able to just do: sudo apt purge trisquel sudo install gnome ... and voila! no? I haven't tried yet, will experiment soon.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel GNU/Linux ----> Trisquel GNU/Linux-Libre
Can't argue with that on the merits, but it's already a mouthful.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Development and Contribution
I'm thrilled we finally have Trisquel 8. I was wondering if there is some form of start date or initiation action that happens when we start Trisquel 9. When do we start? I'm particularly interested in decentralizing the development so it is somehow easier for everyone to contribute. ...I don't mean for this to be a sensitive topic by the way. I just want to kind of get things rolling if they can begin to roll.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to completely replace MATE with GNOME?
If GNOME is there, choose it. Otherwise, just don't install anything. On first boot, you'll get the command-line. Just log in, "sudo apt-get install gnome", and then "sudo shutdown -r now".
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel GNU/Linux ----> Trisquel GNU/Linux-Libre
I think there is a branding issue with the title. Trisquel uses Linux-Libre kernel instead of Linux kernel. Therefore, Trisquel should be branded or titled as GNU/Linux-Libre; not just GNU/Linux. For example, Dragora GNU/Linux-Libre uses the right title.
