This is what I would suggest if the OP wanted to go back to using this
system. I am under the impression that they just want to recover data
from it, which can be achieved more easily by mounting the disk with
graphical tools.

You can reset your user password by chrooting using a live CD:

Ah. Just reread your message and saw that you were able to get into your
wife's account. This means that the disk is not encrypted, which is
good. That was my worry, since the graphical Trisquel installer has an
option to encrypt the entire disk. It does not have an option to encrypt
your home folder, so unless you used the text installer (which does have
such an option) you should be okay.

Do you recall whether you encrypted your disk or home directories when
installing Trisquel? If so, you're out of luck without a password. If
not, the following might work:

You'll need a bootable CD or USB running Trisquel (or another distro).
If you don't have one and don't know how to create one, see here.[1]

Boot into the CD or USB drive and select "Try Trisquel without
installing."

Once you're in a Trisquel live session, open the file manager. On the
left-hand side of the window you will see a list of media. Hopefully
your hard disk will be in there. If the disk is not encrypted, you
should be able to click on it and mount it without a password.

If that works, you should see a "home" directory. Enter it. There, you
should see a directory for each user. If they are not encrypted, you
should be able to enter these folders without a password.

If that works, copy the files you want to recover onto some other
medium.

Good luck!

[Trisquel-users] Lost password on Trisquel machine!

2019-10-13 Thread mkl80

Hello to all. I came here because none of the other forums could helped me.
I am not using Trisquel anymore, although I consider the concept interesting,
but not practical, anyway...I have some photos in the disk, that I would like
to retrieve, particularly photos of my then pregnant wife. It is somewhat
important to us to get those unique photos that we store on that trisquel
computer.
The thing is I don't know any more, what was my password then... I have two
accounts on that machine, one mine, and the other of my wife. We (me and my
wife) could enter in my wife account, because we know the password of her
account, but the photos we need were stored in my account, because I am the
"linux" person in the house, she never cared much using linux and her
account.
I've seen some other forum, but that didn't help much because of one simple
reason, that irritates me a lot (sorrY):
When I click in the advance mode, the computer prompts right away to enter
username, and then password! That's exactly what I don't know! It didn't make
much sense... I am handed thigh in this situation!

With this set of informations could anyone help me? Please.
Thanks in advance and I will consider contribute more for real free software
like trisquel Linux.

I guess Debian doesn't have that package. You can grab it from the
Trisquel repo too.

http://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/pool/main/g/gtk3-engines-unico/

If you have a 64-bit system download the one that says amd64. For 32-bit
use the one that says i386. Install it with dpkg, and then try again to
install trisquel-gtk-theme.
