The drivers come from the kernel and it seems a logical place to start. Part
of troubleshooting is trying out different things. Trying a different kernel
would then help to, if nothing else, rule that out.
I planned to make a presentation using a free/libre distribution yesterday,
but with very limited hardware resources. And the situation was very
embarrassing. They said that Trisquel was the stupidest operating system that
even couldn't correctly detect the type of a mature NIC.

Ubuntu Kylin's desktop environment (namely, UKUI) version 2.0 is based on
MATE, so there are quite some similarities. UKUI is also in Debian's main
repository (starting current stable, "buster"), and you can try it if you
like.
Rumor has it that UKUI 3.0 would be based on KDE.
I can't help but notice that Trisquel's MATE configuration looks very
similar to Ubuntu Kylin's MATE. Did Ruben look to Kylin when designing
Trisquel's interface?

Using the 'dark background and light text' addon for firefox compensates for
the problem, but the color settings of the addon and the theme are not
exactly the same.

Have you tried a newer kernel? Trisquel 8 ships with Linux 4.4 but you can
install, from its repository, the package "linux-image-generic-hwe-8.0" to
get a 4.15 image. You can have version 4.19 or even 5.3 following the
instructions on https://jxself.org/linux-libre/
You need to reboot on

You are out of luck. Unfortunately to my knowledge ATI gpus require
proprietary firmware in order to work properly (yes, even to display the
correct video resolution).
Consider (if you are able to do so) selling your hardware and buying some
freedom compatible one. This website can help

Jami provides an apt repository. If you edit /etc/apt/sources.list as
root and add the line
deb https://dl.jami.net/ring-nightly/ubuntu_16.04/ ring main
You should be able to then run
$ sudo apt update

yes for now i do need to install jami or ring! and upgrade keepassx from
2.0.2 to 2.0.3

Thanks for pointing this out. I've asked David if there's anything he
can do about this.

I'm not aware of any privacy-hostile changes between Ubuntu 16.04 and
Ubuntu 18.04. If have been such changes, I would like to know so we can
fix them. Otherwise, Trisquel 9 should be equally
