Also, I click my way to standbye, via Launcher--Power Off--Suspend, it won't
wake back up no matter what I try. Keys, mouse, open close lid, pressing
power button, nothing. I have to hold the power button down for several
seconds to force shut down and reboot.
I am such a clumsy idiot. My foot caught the power cord this morning and
pulled the laptop off my coffee table. It hit the floor on the edge of the
screen and now the frame around the display has a crack in the top right.
Sigh. Need to buy some plastics glue to repair it.
I'm also noticing that closing the lid of the T400 doesn't put it into
standby, but powers it off completely. In System Settings I have it set to
"suspend" but it's powering off. (This was before I damaged it LOL.) Any
ideas?

I doubt that. What you haven't seen is the other 6 or so other 3.x versions I
had accumulated via Software Updater, that autoremove wouldn't touch. I did a
cleanup using apt purge commands.
I don't allow any real-time access to me on my personal devices. So, no work
email, no work chat, not text messaging, and I don't take calls from work
related numbers.
When I happen to telecommute unexpectedly, which means I don't have my work
laptop with me, I'll tolerate real-time access

Guys, good news. Leah gave me a super simple solution to get the kernel
updated. It's ok to use linux-libre for the updated kernels, but then:

ariella@/ $ sudo ln -s /boot/initrd.img-4.14.13-gnu
Linux-libre is what I'm attempting to use, and if you read all my posts
you'll see that I have already followed all the steps in the documentation
including the aliasing of grub.cfg to libreboot_grub.cfg for libreboot.
Autoremove has not been removing them. Tried that many times. :)

I did: sudo apt-get upgrade, and many packages got upgraded.
Next time I ran the Trisquel Software Update, it offered to update
linux-libre kernel to 4.14 lol. (Hasn't done this before, not even when I
installed the linux-libre-lts myself at the command line.) I
TEST: Grub.cfg after copying it to ~/ first and chmod to 777, and then
gzipping because of the forum's extension restrictions.
Figured out how to do removals:

Thanks so much for the input. I ended up reaching out to Minifree who set up
the laptop and asked them. I was too afraid of doing flashrom related things,
so instead they gave me a solution that involved symbolic-linking vmlinuz and
initrd.img to the updated kernel version files in /boot.
