Your 750 Ti, like all Maxwell cards, may never work under a fully free
operating system. Even if the NVIDIA-provided firmware was free, you would
not be able to run a modified version if it, especially being “tivoized”.
I don't think much will change for Wine users. Mono is a different case
though.
Michael Larabel, the author of Phoronix?
He didn't test it on Trisquel, maybe the reclocking support may require
proprietary firmware. Also, it is unlikely to be found in Trisquel 7.
LibreOffice is more active anyway.
It's not like installing it will break your system. The point of
`build-essential` is to have a set of useful packages for developers or users
that compile programs in general.
So, yes, `sudo apt install build-essential` will install GCC.

You can use WordPress (the CMS) for free – it is free software released
under the GNU GPL.
WordPress.com is the official hosted instance, that has some paid feature.
Mibbit basically uses IRC. You can register a nick name using the IRC
services, see `/msg NickServ help` for information.
For sharing files, you would use DCC, but this requires a compatible client
and port forwarding.
Hello,
In French, some of the welcome texts (in the Ubiquity installer) are not
translated. Where can I help translate them?
So, would I add a `fr` directory, translate it then make a merge request?

“FSF has an excellent plugging to force your a-browser to do HTTPS, instead
of regular http.”
You mean the EFF?
Unity (the desktop environment) is available under the GPLv3. Contributors
have to sign a CLA in order to get their stuff merged.
It is free, but with non-free stuff included, that's all.
It is free, but with non-free stuff included, that's all.
I believe selling copies of digital works is not sustainable, so please don't
tell people to make their game data proprietary and paid.
It runs proprietary firmware.
But the Freerunner can hardly be considered a smartphone.
Note that “The FSF can approve the hardware” is very different from
“The hardware runs on free software.”. This is for practical reasons,
else nothing could be RYF-certified.
It is possible to edit `/etc/default/grub`, change the `GRUB_GFXMODE`
variable, use `sudo update-grub2` then reboot. However, the GFX mode must be
available, and strange resolutions are rarely available.
Try setting font hinting to Light instead of Full.
Looks like the movie will be released under CC
“Which CC?” is a question to ask. I believe it's CC BY here, but remember
that some CC licenses are non-free.
Chromium is not in Trisquel repositories for the following reasons:
- recommends non-free extensions,
- too linked to Google's proprietary services,
- there is licensing uncertainty over certain files.
MyTourbook appears to use the GPLv2 as license, which is free software:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mytourbook/
Usually, it's due to a graphics driver issue. Not all graphics drivers can
suspend and resume reliably.
ddwrt and OpenWRT have propriretary firmware.
There is some free software on Steam, as far as I remember. The vast majority
of games and software available on Steam are non-free though.
The next Trisquel release is very likely to be Trisquel 8, which will be
released after the release of Ubuntu 16.04 in April 2016.
+1 for µBlock.
You can also use an /etc/hosts file to block Google Analytics.
Don't imply “copyrighted” is non-free. The GPL is a copyright license and
it is free.
It is fine to use HTML5 and CSS3, as long as you don't use the DRM features.
Try not to require JavaScript whenever possible. JavaScript can however be
run in freedom just fine, like most plugins. The use of the Expat (“MIT”)
license is very frequent in the Web development world, whereas the
PrestaShop is free/libre, but uses licenses incompatible with the GPL like
the Academic Free License.
We ought to find better business models than selling copies of digital works.
The book is not free culture (CC BY-NC-SA 2.5) by the way.
Is there some skinnable free software game where you can add
characters and storylines of the proprietary universe you happen to be
a fan of? In my experience. most of the free culture/free software
games with a storyline just aren't very well written. :-(
Xonotic has various custom player
A lot of “non-functional” data turns out to be functional, i.e. it's a
pain to fork a game that has proprietary game data. You often can't duplicate
the data, so you have to rely on downloaders and hope the original source
stays up.
“For private users”
To get a modern icon set, you can try `sudo apt install
libreoffice-style-sifr`.
This is offtopic, but how do you bundle blocks of code in forum posts like
this?
Light hinting is usually the best hinting.
Make sure to avoid non-free fonts…
C# and Python are probably very different languages (one is medium-level, one
is high-level).
Using copylefted software doesn't require doing anything, only distributing
it, and in some cases, modifying it.
Graphics tablets should work in many free softwares including GIMP, Inkscape
and Krita.
linuxwacom.sourceforge.net
You should have ordered a GeForce GT 610.
I stopped playing proprietary games about a year ago (I play only on a PC, so
no console gaming either).
Try playing only free games for some time and see how it goes. The
proprietary games may eventually feel redundant.
Savannah requires manual approval, that is a showstopper to most people.
Also, its interface is ugly and not responsive.
http://notabug.org looks better.
Hello,
I'd just like to announce Notabug here, which is a platform for hosting your
projects, like GitHub and GitLab. It runs on the MIT/Expat-licensed Gogs.
Home page: https://notabug.org
Explore: https://notabug.org/explore
Gogs: http://gogs.io
Apparently, I can't edit the first post.
So, here's a non-exhaustive of features:
- issue tracker,
- compact commit view,
- mirroring support,
- organizations…
Known limitations:
- no pull requests yet.
Install the gnupg2 package.
VP9 is better than both VP8 and Fedora. It's 2015, we can afford to use it
now.
Use copyleft to prevent exploitative usage of your stuff, not non-commercial
clauses.
The wiki pages say: “Updated Feb 4, 2010 by zackbar...@gmail.com
”
Comodo is likely to be proprietary…
Give Geany a try, it's free/libre and just as lightweight. :)
`sudo apt install geany`
Dual booting with UEFI might be a bit tricky, but single booting is very
easy.
Plain GPL doesn't help much in the case of Web services.
Yes, it is.
While we are talking about default fonts, here is the default sans-serif one
I use: https://www.google.com/get/noto/
Natron (free/librecompositing software, licensed under MPL 2.0):

It is a better idea not to list Debian. Also, make sure it is “GNU/Linux”
and not just “Linux”.
Doomsday Engine: http://dengine.net/
This?
I too would have liked it to accept only libre licenses. Anyway, the MMDB is
currently broken, so most people (including me) use the forums.
The Minetest supplied by Debian already recommends the in-game “mod
store”. So, the one in Ubuntu and Trisquel repositories should be fine.
https://notabug.org/ runs Gogs. So does https://git.tox.im/.
Chromium uses 3-clause BSD indeed. Some files appear to lack license headers
though (according to Wikipedia, they're called “unlicensed files”).
I occasionally play (online chess without js would be nice).
I doubt you want that in 2015 (it's possible, but really inconvenient; it
would probably require a page reload at each move). I'll suggest using
Lichess but it uses a non-free JavaScript library (Highcharts) for drawing
graphs.
You basically want a CDN like cdnjs.com and jsDelivr, but hosting free
software only? The problem is that hosting files locally, instead of using a
CDN, usually delivers best performance and privacy (as there are less DNS
requests).
GCJ has tons of issues with most software, better not even consider it.
Yes, you can develop full programs in Java without using proprietary
software. However, the Android SDK (the combination, not the individual
tools) is proprietary, so you will want to use the Replicant SDK instead.
For developing games using Java, take a look at jMonkeyEngine.
No, chances are you won't have 3D acceleration with fully libre drivers
unless you're using something like a GeForce 8400.
Actually, most NVIDIA cards are supported by Nouveau. The worst offenders are
the Maxwell series one (750/750 Ti for instance).
Cross-platform support and ease of use is a concern though.
By the way, if you want a large collection of free/libre TTF fonts, check
this out: https://github.com/google/fonts/archive/master.zip
No need to use Disconnect, just use uBlock: https://chrismatic.io/ublock/
Use http://notabug.org/ or http://git.framasoft.org/ for hosting.
Short scripts don't need to use the GPLv3, you can use the Expat (MIT)
license: http://choosealicense.com/licenses/mit/
What about PyPy? It's a JIT interpreter for Python. http://pypy.org/
What about this?
https://github.com/prikhi/pencil (GPLv2)
Nouveau will probably never support Maxwell using exclusively free firmware.
The firmware is signed by NVIDIA and not replaceable. Only firmware signed by
NVIDIA can be used.
There is no 3D acceleration for Maxwell currently (no firmware available
right now), and there will probably never
There is no permanent confirmation of an HDD manufacturer not having spying
firmware, as they are all proprietary. Thus, buy purely based on price.
The fact software isn't copylefted doesn't impact you as an user in the
slightest…
Are you aware Nouveau will require proprietary, signed blobs starting from
Maxwell cards?
Fully free/libre graphics are not possible anymore, with current generation
hardware. All Intel, NVIDIA, AMD require binary blobs for their free drivers
to function.
Download and install it manually, the version in the packages is very out of
date. This is true for all “content” management systems.
How about this? Those templates are free/libre, but you need to provide
attribution.
http://html5up.net/
It's ~/.config/libreoffice.
We have many other competing, free languages that are even openly developed,
like Rust, Python, Ruby, Go, ...
It's not like we lack programming languages. :)
There is no ARM port of Trisquel that I know of.
Yes, it is GPLv2.
It is usually automatically done. On this system, I didn't have to do
anything special in order to use sensors.
Red Eclipse is definitely okay, it's in Debian main. The logo font has been
SIL OFL'd for a long time now.
We're at Fedora 22 already, and have been for more than 2 months now.
This would require a lot of work on Ubiquity, the installer of Trisquel,
which is not set up for that.
You can also do this:
sudo apt-get install lm-sensors
Then:
watch -n1 sensors
No one published free/libre replacement data for them yet. Same goes for most
Quake/Doom games (eg. Doom 3).
No, there are no known patent issues on Go. The Go tools themselves are under
a BSD 3-Clause license.
Icons are licensed under the Creative Commons License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)
Please switch to a free license. CC BY 4.0, CC BY-SA 4.0 are both suitable.
Did you read this page?
Hardware virtualization is designed to virtualize proprietery operating
systems, I think there is no need for hardware virtualization in the free
world.
I strongly disagree with this. Hardware virtualization is a huge performance
improvement and power saver over software. This is like
I heard YouTube changed its video player recently. Sadly, it's still
proprietary.
For heavy corporate users, not being able to send more than 30 e-mails a day
can be a problem. For free software advocates too...
It is not possible to benefit from 3D acceleration, and even less from video
acceleration, using fully free software. The free radeon driver relies on a
non-free blob to function, which is not present in Linux-libre, the kernel
Trisquel uses.
/r/linux_gaming, /r/linux, /r/opensourcegames, /r/freegaming
Why is TriSquel's last release so old?
Lack of manpower, ask quidam on IRC.
Yes, it is likely that you can perform some kind of check. You could even
reject installation entirely, if you find a reliable way to detect the
package license.
