Well, I don't know if this will help your case, but I remember an issue
related to pulseaudio on the old Debian Stable (Jessie), in that the audio
would randomly mute and whatever I tried it would not come back..
The pseudo-fix was to install pavucontrol and then unmute it within its GUI.
