Re: [Trisquel-users] Leaving Trisquel over systemd Concerns, Fantastic Project Otherwise, Thanks
Old packages and security don't really go well together. More to the point - the amount of effort that goes into maintaining a branch of a distro isn't low, but it's certainly within the realm of possibility. It probably comes down to skill and time to spend on this project

Re: [Trisquel-users] Generic console?
It's available for different platforms, one of them being the Sony PSP. Iirc this was the first platform they developed the game for, as well. This makes it a homebrew that could be played with the libre PPPSSPP emulator (just so happens that there are versions for ARM and x86 now, which would make it more or less pointless in this particular scenario depending on the platform - but the point still stands).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Generic console?
I had a lot of fun with https://github.com/WagicProject/wagic for example
Re: [Trisquel-users] Generic console?
Hmm, this gets me thinking... The homebrew scene for many consoles has been and is very active and produced some great libre games. Seeing that most emulators are Free Software, putting together a list of libre homebrew games might be useful.

Re: [Trisquel-users] (A)broswer and privacy: Don't allow to to maximise window fully
Interesting topic. Thanks for bringing it up, GNUbahn. IIRC, the Tor Browser does indeed notify the user when resizing the window from the default size it launches at, whether by maximizing or resizing it manually. This warning stems from the fact that websites can determine the users' browser window resolution. As you correctly stated, if many users are browsing with the same browser window resolution, any website will have less information to use in order to identify the user with. The goal of keeping the browser at the same size would be to keep e.g. a Tor Browser user in line with other Tor Browser users, thus minimizing the risk of personal identification further. The suggestion you brought up with respect to letting the user resize the browser window up to 3% (or any %, really) would defeat the purpose by causing a deviation of a few pixels from the "default" (under the assumption that the standard browser resolution is fairly common). This would, in fact, make it easier to identify users. The information that a website operator would receive looks similar to the following: 1280x1024x24, with the former two numbers being the X and Y resolution and the latter being the color depth. Assuming your idea were implemented, the user would end up with something like 1299x1039x32, with other users having slightly deviating resolutions. This would make it trivial to track them across sites more so than a standard browser maximized on a screen with a common resolution (such as 1920x1080 for desktop monitors). The link posted by 3n3r6yD is rather useful in order to understand it, due to it being interactive. I hope I didn't bore you too much! I definitely would be for having a fixed browser resolution being an option in Abrowser that could be toggled from the new tab screen, but I am uncertain as to the technical possibility, seeing that the windows are managed by the window manager, which the browser probably shouldn't have direct influence on considering the security implications when (not if) a security exploit were to be found in the web browser.

From the Trisquel "Donate" page: If you want your donation to be publicly shown in our site, remember to press the "go back to Trisquel GNU/Linux" link at the end of the PayPal payment process. If you make a deposit in our account you can contact with us and we will manually add your donation to the list. Have you tried sending an email? I would expect that it works analogous to the one-time donations - I imagine it's hard to automatically have bank transfers trigger the membership status (for lack of a better world).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Linux friendly hardware free of proprietary software
As for laptops, I can vouch for the aforementioned and well-known Vikings store. The x200 I bought from them works flawlessly with free software and I am currently running Parabola on it. If you check out the libreboot website, you will find a few laptops that can be flashed using software only. Those might be worth a look. When it comes to WiFi USB dongles, I have successfully used unbranded/not very well known ones with the AR9271 and another chipset (that I can't recall the name of right now). As for bluetooth USB dongles, CSR 4.0 dongles are cheap and readily available. They work perfectly well. Desktop computers will be a bit harder due to the motherboard. If you were to get a libreboot compatible motherboard, Intel is the right way to go. (Also, I will be jealus xD)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Newbie trying to load Trisquel on Acer Computer.
To sum it up - welcome to Trisquel. Most users on the forums prefer the term of "Free Software", as we think of it as an ethical issue. It's about software that is free as in freedom of speech. The 'open source' camp (best term I can think of) merely decides to let others work on their code as well, because they think it's convenient. While in most cases Free Software and open source software are the same, the idea is a different one. I hope that explained it simply enough. In any case, enjoy your free computing experience (assuming you got Trisquel to work)!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does PlayOnLinux work with Trisquel 8?
You might want to open a new thread and provide some specific information on the piece of software you are trying to install. Getting programs to run in Wine (PlayOnLinux is a tool to manage programs that are run using Wine) can be a bit hit-and-miss sometimes and it can be hard to find information on the specific issues one encounters, especially when trying to get a lesser known program to run.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Iridium installation
Please try to run apt-get install libpam-gnome-keyring This should install the piece of software you need and opening Iridium afterwards should present you with an option to unlock the keyring for you everytime you open the browser. I don't know why the keyboard layout would change, however - unless the primary layout was set to US or UK, maybe.

[Trisquel-users] Documentation for Trisquel (or other libre GNU/Linux distros)
Hi everyone! I remember a discussion I recently had about documentation and Free Software. One critical thing that turns people off or might make it harder for a user to actually use some pieces of Free Software is a lack of documentation, which just so happens to be an issue that can be tackled by non-technical members of the community. In this spirit, I'd like to ask all of you for suggestions on (libre) programs that (in your opinion) need more documentation, be it for setup, administration or anything that you feel is appropriate. The focus of this should be on software that is already included with Trisquel or other libre distros in order to make them more approachable, but I'd appreciate suggestions for self-hosting guides for certain applications etc. as well. If requests come up for something I'm confident writing about, I'll take the time to try and write documentation (be it a guide, tutorial or something similar) myself. Apart from adding the Trisquel-specific information to the wiki, I can host the rest on a small Debian server instance that to be set aside for this. Please post with suggestions and whether or not you think it would be useful, if you're interested in providing something yourself and any other hints.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Needs A Name
I whole-heartedly agree. There is a set naming scheme for Trisquel releases, we should go with that as it stands and there is not reason to introduce any arbitrary rules. It doesn't matter if the release code names are of male *or* female god*esses or one that's unisex, for lack of a better word, because that's not the *point*. The argument is akin to discussing whether a release milestone should be named after a small or large clothing size, or it being a one-size-fits-all release name.

Thanks for updating. We can rule that out, then. I suggest trying the suggestion Magic Banana made.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trying to install on a ThinkPad x200s
That's good to know. I better specify however: I was asking for the names you put in when creating the partitions, as I suspect that special characters in the names of the partitions or the disk itself, which might cause the errors you described. Basically, try installing with as simple a name as you can think of - avoiding any special characters if possible.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trying to install on a ThinkPad x200s
First of all I'd like to welcome you to the Trisquel forums: Welcome, enjoy your stay :) To address your problem, please post the disk label you chose when defining the partitioning scheme.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Needs A Name
Camulus (Camulos, Camalos) is a god of war and sky. Other terms that might be found are a German band (spelled Camulos) and a museum called Rancho Camulos. Those don't rank very high in the searches I made.
Re: [Trisquel-users] ebook reader advice
I agree with aloniv on the point of avoiding DRM, the few books I looked at on their site all say that they come with Adobe DRM. Opening epub however shouldn't be an issue for e.g. fbreader. The deletion of books RMS occasionally talks about refers to the Amazon (Sw/K)indle, which was used by Amazon to delete 1984 from readers devices. If you were to use a Free Software reader application, you won't run the risk of this happening to you - but you might run the risk of not being able to view the book (now or in the future) if the DRM is intrusive enough. You might find https://www.defectivebydesign.org/guide/ebooks to be an interesting read.

[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Difference between GET and HEAD in hacking attempts
Hi amenex. I'd agree that those requests may have been executed by someone who's "up to no good", it's likely though that someone just set a vulnerability scanner on you or some spider was doing whatever a spiderpig... uh.. spider does. To get to your main question: An HTTP HEAD request isn't often used. It's a way to ask a webserver to send the same information that a GET request would yield, without the message body. Only the HEAD - makes sense, right? It can be useful to find out about certain things, saves traffic and keeps bandwidth usage comparatively low and pretty much retrieves metadata from a webserver. Some information you'll get is whether the website is up, the content length or when the website has last been modified. - PenGNUin

Two takes on this. First: http://sealedabstract.com/code/nsa-proof-your-e-mail-in-2-hours/ is a guide that seems to do a fine job at explaining how to run an email server. Second: You might not want to do it in the first place. I actually considered it myself and ended up reading an article that persuaded me not to do so at the time. Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to find the article again. However, this one gives a good overview as well: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/why-you-may-not-want-to-run-your-own-mail-server DigitalOceans website also has a host of tutorials/guides on the topic, should you want to use a specific solution.

[Trisquel-users] Antwort: How effective is Random Agent Spoofer
I'd sum it up in saying that it has access to a lot of things that can identify you. It's a kind of design issue - if a website wants to display a certain font in order to make their website look all shiny, it can ask your browser to provide a list of fonts that it supports. If that's non-standard, it's not hard to identify you. Same goes for addons. There are a ton of things that can be done, apart from stuff like the user agent. Also, JavaScript driveby is a thing. Unfortunately, there are a lot of problems that JS poses. For privacy, however, start by blocking trackers (ad networks, followed by analytics websites) and others and only enable JS if neccessary. NoScript really is your best bet.

[Trisquel-users] Antwort: About systemd
That line of reasoning seems perfectly reasonable to me. I wasn't concerned about freedom with systemd - it is Free Software and as such perfectly acceptable in my books. In regards to swapping it out being viable, this is what I've seen in a few distros, some of which seem to be marketing more or less exclusively the lack of systemd as a feature in and of itself. The only argument I've heard agains the freedom to either include it or not include it in any specific distro was that it was supposedly a dependency for many a package. That would restrict it in that regard, however I don't know if that's true and a widespread issue or simply refers to an isolated incident. Totally agree with your point about the philosophical implications, however - it would be ridiculous to argue that because of the violation of an arbitrary principle one should not use a certain piece of software, as long as there are no real negative implications tied to it. GNU/Linux should definitely not be tied to such a thing, even though adhering to the principle has produced good programs in the past. Correlation does not imply causation. Thanks for your extensive answer. - PenGNUin

[Trisquel-users] About systemd
Hello everyone, excuse the potentially stupid question: I've been reading about systemd lately and was wondering what exactly is the main issue that some people seem to have with it. My understanding so far is that it violates the Unix principle of doing one thing and doing it right and the amount of features potentially causing issues in the future/already causing issues. Is that correct? I'd like to know the stance and of some reasons for and against using it compared to, e.g., OpenRC. - PenGNUin

I do not, but if I ever decide to start one I'll make sure to let you know. Glad to meet you as well! For me, the trackpoint is perfect but I see why someone might want to use a touchpad. There are external touchpads like these, in fact: http://www.redferret.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/usbmultitouchpad.jpg which might be a solution. Learning to do certain tasks on the command line is really useful. Fortunately, most tutorials originally tailored to Ubuntu will apply to Trisquel as well - so learning material is abundant. Regarding the colors - I have no real idea on how to fix it and am not quite sure if I understand the problem you're describing. - PenGNUin

Since this seems to be the right place to write this down, I'd like to share my experience with buying a liberated X200 from another vendor (it's about the laptop itself, running Libreboot and Trisquel 7). I've been very happy with the device myself, upgraded it to the maximum of 8GB RAM and got a speedy Samsung SSD for it. All in all I couldn't be happier. Great keyboard, fast and absolutely great when it comes to running Trisquel (haven't tried any other GNU/Linux distro with it so far). Re: [Trisquel-users] Used correct password and still locked out !
Hi LinuxDummy, this could have one of several reasons. I'd advise you to first check which keymap is selected - if you are using e.g. a French keyboard while having the US keymap selected, many keys won't match the letters that are on your physical keyboard. Secondly, as you can indeed login on another TTY, you can do so and type "startx" at the command line to further troubleshoot from there. My guess is that on starting the X server, a different keymap is selected for some reason (possibly something wasn't set correctly during setup or something of the sort). At the command line, however, it might be defaulting to the correct keymap, which would explain why you can login there but not using your display manager (the "GUI login screen"). Hope this helps! - PenGNUin
