Re: [Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
My freedom is not restricted. What is free as FSF wants? My We're talking about the OED freedom, n. I.1 distinct meaning of freedom - a matter of liberty. So it doesn't need inverted commas. The most common confusion we see here is with the I.9 distinct meaning - lack of encumbrance. You seem to have that confusion. understanding is that I can get software, change it if I like, and re-share it with the world as long as I respect the GNU license. I feel no need to change firmware or drivers. The manufacturers know more about their hardware than any of us do especially in regards to making software to make it work. If you actually knew what goes on in hardware maufacturers you wouldn't be saying that. Hardware manufacturers rarely do a good job with drivers. The reality is usually the best people to write a free software O/S driver are the relevant community, they're the most technically competent at the job. Open Source distributions are running way ahead of FSF and better software is being created. Something like 90% of the code is the same and free distros will run happily on many machines. Admittedly there aren't free software replacements for everything as yet, but there's enough for people motivated by that freedom to more than get by without needing proprietary code.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Tp link librecmc wifi router on an isp modem with public address?
Mine hasn't arrived yet so I can only give generic advice which is: 'For more WiFi speed set it to 40MHz mode, that does 300Mbp/s. Usually with routers (and upstream) the firewall is already configured.' For other stuff try asking on IRC channel #librecmc at irc.freenode.net. Or consult the upstream docs at https://openwrt.org/ as at this stage I would guess LibreCMC still uses uci (command line) and LuCI (web) for router config. OR maybe someone who actually has one will chip in - Anyone? Leny
Re: [Trisquel-users] Tp link librecmc wifi router on an isp modem with public address?
Thank you for your answers. It worked. I switched off the tp link router and isp router modem for 5 hours. Turned on the isp router modem and the tp link router, and I got internet access. Using url 192.168.1.1 I can log into the tp link router. Tp link asks me to set a root psswd. Shall I do that, and how many letters can it be? It's a normal GNU/Linux password so any length you like (or at least mine is set to a looong randomly generated password). However as it's via web avoid the URL special characters (%?) just in case there's a bug in the web interface. Next step is to contact my isp provider and make them turn the isp router modem into a modem with a public ip address? When that is done, the tp link router should work by connecting it to the isp modem with public address? No further config? We need to know the technical details of your connection. I've only dealt with somewhere in the midteens of different ADSL routers here in the UK and none of them had a true 'become a modem' mode. So what your ISP means by what they're saying is at present a matter of guesswork. Ask them for the connection parameters/details for your side of the router/modem. Leny
Re: [Trisquel-users] Budget laser printer
In keeping with the above on HP. I use an old HP Laserjet 4050 with Trisquel, it's mono. Very cheap refurbished, the only thing to watch is the fuser life guarantee as they're very expensive to replace with new ones if you can get them. I did the figures on my purchase and worked out I could buy one and throw it away when the fuser came to end of minimum guaranteed life (66K pages) and still pay 0.3p + paper price per sheet for my printing costs. As it turns out the one I bought had 190K pages of fuser life. Leny

Re: [Trisquel-users] Tp link librecmc wifi router on an isp modem with public address?
If the tp link router is not bricked, can you tell how to log into the tp link router and what settings to make? If you use the Network Manager System Tray icon and display Connection Information you should be able to get the routers address. Then putting something like : http://192.168.1.1/ in your web browser address bar should get you the admin pages for the router. If you can't find the address try that value anyway because it's the default with LibreCMC's upstream. Then you'll know if you've been successful. As to what settings, I suggest you try the LibreCMC or OpenWRT websites.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is it possible to restart a text mode install that failed half way through?
Some caveats - a) I've never done exactly this so I can't promise it will work b) I strongly question the wisdom of running Trisquel on a machine too small to run the text mode installer. Having said those the procedure will be something like boot text mode install get past select language and keyboard Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get to the second console Press Enter to start the Busybox shell Then where /dev/sdX is your root and boot partition # mount /dev/sdX /target # mount --bind /proc /target/proc # mount --bind /sys /target/sys # chroot /target # /usr/sbin/grub-install /dev/sdX # /usr/sbin/update-grub /dev/sdX # exit # umount /target/proc # umount /target/sys # umount /target # reboot That's how I got around a failed grub install due to a screen corruption bug with the Belenos betas text mode installer. But that was much later in the process, so it might not work for you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is it possible to restart a text mode install that failed half way through?
Seems you did better than I could remember off the top of my head (i.e. /dev) in between the time I started typing and my next email refresh. :-) A pox on cheap BIOSes, I'm sure you'll agree.
