Re: [Trisquel-users] PDF compressor
Hi Majin, A while back I searched for something related and in one of the forums the use of ghostscript was recommended. I've used it and so far I am satisfied. I am not savvy, so others forum members might help, but that's how I've been using it: In terminal: gs -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dPDFSETTINGS=/ebook -sOutputFile=OUTPUT-FILE-NAME.pdf FILE-TO-REDUCE.pdf If I'm not mistaken, you could change the size/resolution by changing the -dPDFSETTINGS variable - please check: https://www.ghostscript.com/doc/9.23/VectorDevices.htm
Re: [Trisquel-users] problem after this morning's update
another update: tried to open abrowser through terminal, and I got: (abrowser:6454): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 12:00:27.570: g_object_ref: assertion 'object->ref_count > 0' failed Segmentation fault Apparently this could be something related to nautilus? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/1582496 any advice on how I could revert to nautilus previous version? thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] problem after this morning's update
update: I'm able to run seamonkey; LibreOffice is working fine as well.
[Trisquel-users] problem after this morning's update
Hi all, I hope somebody could help me solve this situation. I logged in this morning and synaptic's update box popped up with a bunch of software update (including abrowser, kernel etc). After updating & rebooting, the following is broken: - abrowser doesn't start at all; - evolution opens up, but then I click on the windown or try to open a message, it immediately crashes; - the menubar/taskbar shows nothing at all (I have to reboot/shutdown via terminal) - /boot shows up as a mounted volume my desktop (I'm not sure it showed up before) [btw my disk was encrypted at trisquel's installation] I tried rebooting with other kernels (3.13.0-137-lowlatency, 3.13.0.141-lowlatency) but all the above problems persist. Current kernel: 4,4,0-32-generic Could this be a non-kernel issue? What should I do next? Thank you!
[Trisquel-users] Repositorry/IM tools/Trisquel 8/frustrations for an average user
Dear all, Ever since I became convinced of the importance of the Free Software movement, I - an average joe computer user - have been only using free software for my personal computing. I applaud all the efforts. However, there is much work to be done. Let me briefly explain my situation: - I have been using Trisquel as my sole distro for some years now, and my use consists of using LibreOffice, browsing the net, and Evolution for email. - I've become recently interested in using cross-platform communications tools in order to communicate with my parents, and here is where I stumbled with most problems: * EFF advises using OTR for XMPP communications (e.g. using Pidgin). However, there are known vulnerabilities with OTR 4.0.0, which is the one provided currently with Trisquel 7. So in order to update OTR, I had to compile it from source. * I am trying to update Pidgin to the latest version, but I am running into a "dependency hell". * I recently found out about GNU-Ring. Alas, I cannot install GNU-Ring in my computer, which is running a distro that is being used by the FSF, because of another dependency nightmare. * I was able to run uTox, but when I tried to install better Tox desktop clients, I also ran into the dependency nightmares. * Oddly enough, I was able to install Signal-Desktop. And that's what frustrates me most: I am able to install Signal, but am unable to run GNU Ring :-( People might say "but witlh Trisquel 8 a lot of these issues will be fixed", but where is it? When will it a stable version be released? Will be repo be up-to-date, or quickly deprecated? Because of all these difficulties with updating software of everyday use, and unless there is some serious effort (resources) to keep the repo easily updated, I am seriously considering moving to another distro, such as Devuan or straight to Debian (without any of the non-free repos, of course). It is unfortunate that I feel very uncomfortable recommending Trisquel as the go-to distro for an average user. In an ideal world, what I could hope for is for a few FSF-endorsed free GNU/Linux distros that is easy to install, easy to use, and that is kept up-to-date, so that everybody could be using the same tools in the most secure manner. I think that this will be essential for the spread of free software, but there is a lot to be done until then. I apologize for being off-topic, but this is a community I cherish and trust.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Clientes do Banco do Brasil: reclamem do software proprietário!
Aqui no Brasil? Não consigo acessar nenhuma das minhas contas seja do Itaú ou BB... todos requerem instalação de software proprietário; é uma frustração constante... Estamos juntos :-) [apologizing in advance for this Brazilian corner; we are very frustrated for not being able to use any Brazilian internet banking service without using proprietary software, and we want to change that]
Re: [Trisquel-users] Who of this community honestly runs Trisquel GNU/Linux?
I've been happily using Trisquel as my sole OS for the past 3 years, and loving every bit of it ;-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Changing color of foreground text in Abrowser 54.0 pop-up windows.
I happen to have the same problem as mps, and at least with me the problem is restricted to abrowser. This happened after one of the recent upgrades (maybe a month ago?). I didn't complain before because I know where to click (left button to cancel), but it does bother me as well...
Re: [Trisquel-users] IceDove / e-mail client
Thank you for the quick reply jxself - it's always nice and educational to read your posts :-)
[Trisquel-users] IceDove / e-mail client
Dear all, I hope some of you can help me with some advice regarding e-mail programs, specifically IceDove. I am using trisquel 7, with IceDove 38.8.0 installed. Currently, I am having difficulties setting up a gmail IMAP account (I cannot get past the authentication window, an issue already discussed at: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1157498?page=2 Two solutions are suggested: one is to upgrade the mail client, and the second is to change gmail's settings to “allow less secure apps”, which is fine with me. My questions for the forum are: should we be concerned that Trisquel's repo has IceDove 38.8.0, while Debian seems to be already in v. 52.2.1? [ https://packages.debian.org/sid/icedove ] Is there a safe way to install the latest version? If so, how could I proceed? I think this topic is also relevant, specially as FSF is specifically endorsing IceDove as the go-to program for e-mail in their email sefldefense website ( https://emailselfdefense.fsf.org/en/index.html ) BTW, my GNU/Linux knowledge is very limited, so please bear with me :-) Thank you!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Browsers keep crashing
***SOLVED*** Hi all, The issue went away after I manually updated the kernel ( https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/update-linux-libre-kernel ) Life is back to normal - yay :-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Browsers keep crashing
vry interesting... I just downloaded seamonkey 2.40 64 bit version, but didn't install the noscript add-on. seamonkey crashed on loading jnnp.bmj.com :/ on the other hand, googlemaps loaded just fine mysteries of nature...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Browsers keep crashing
Update: just started using Tor Browser directly from Tor Project's website; works like a charm, no crashes... maybe I will just forget about IceCat/abrowser and only use Tor Browser from now on ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Browsers keep crashing
Thank you, I appreciate the input. Trying to clarify: - I do not have add-ons installed; I used the "disable javascript" feature from abrowser itself (from about:home)... I don't have LibreJS installed. - Even though openstreetmap is an alternative, I am still unable to open JNNP's website. - 24 hours ago I was able to browse through JNNP's website normally. - After yesterday's system/security updates, every time I try to open JNNP's website, the browsers crash. - However, if I "disable javascript" from abrowser initial page, JNNP loads. - ...which makes me think that the update somehow messed up some javascript component; that's why I was interested in trying to reinstall it. - The option of disabling javascript causes further problems as it is necessary to open tinytinyRSS. No one so far told me if s/he is able is having any trouble opening JNNP or GoogleMaps (privacy concerns -> Tor is an easy workaround) Solutions that I currently have: - Modify my browser habits and alternate disabling/enabling javascript depending on the webpages I am trying to load (***very annoying***) --> not an option in the long run... - Format the system and do a fresh installation of trisquel, and see if the problem goes away Any further suggestions?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Browsers keep crashing
Update: - abrowser had no add-ons installed. - I completely uninstalled abrowser+icecat; sudo apt-get update, update, autoremove. - rebooted, installed just abrowser and rebooted. - tried the fresh installation of abrowser; websites mentioned continue crashing. - I then checked the "disable javascript" option from abrowser --> was able to open the JNNP website, but for obvious reason can't use googlemaps or (worse in my case) tinytinyRSS (which is >50% of what my computer time consists of...) Next I wanted to try uninstalling and re-installing the javascript components of Trisquel; any idea about the packages involved? thanks!
[Trisquel-users] Browsers keep crashing
Hi all, After updating Trisquel 7 today, both Abrowser and IceCat suddenly crash when a few webpages are opened. One in particular is GoogleMaps Another is a the the webpage of the Jornal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry ( www.jnnp.bmj.com ) Has anyone experienced the same? Are you able to open both pages? A bit frustrating... :-( I am considering reverting to my latest backup before the (highly recommended security) update...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using a projector in Trisquel
Hi Lorbeer, I use a Dell Inspiron 15 running Trisquel 7, and have no problem using the HDMI output to a projector/screen; this is what I actually use for presentations (w/LibreOffice Impress) whenever I have the option (i.e. connecting my own laptop, otherwise I just bring a PDF of the presentation instead). I haven't tried the Blutooth though. Oh, just wanted to add: you can always run Trisquel from a USB drive before you install it, so you can check and see if what your a looking for (resolution, output etc) would works well in your computer.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem with Editing PDF Files and Renaming Files in Nautilus
Unfortunately I am having the same problems with Nautilus as well, and could not find a solution. The keyboard input to Nautilus halts (cannot input anything in the search fields, and Ctrl+C/Ctr+V also does not work), even though I am able to type in other programs (Abrowser, LibreOffice etc). The mouse works inside Nautilus. On a "happier" note, it is not necessary to reboot the system; if Nautilus gets killed (I use System Monitor for that), it reopens functionally (at least for a while, until it decides not to accept keyboard inputs again).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Essential icons disappeared from task bar
Perfect! Problem solved! That's excatly what was missing :-) Many, many thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Essential icons disappeared from task bar
It just refreshes the panel, icons still missing :/
[Trisquel-users] Essential icons disappeared from task bar
Hi all, I hope somebody can help me with a problem that just happened to me. Earlier today I suspended my notebook, but when I opened it again, the usual task bar icons (time, battery time, volume, network/wifi) disappeared and I do not know how to have them back. After rebooting, the icons are there in the log in screen, but after I log myself in, they are just gone again. Already tried: rm ~/.config/dconf/user to no avail. Has anybody run across this issue before? Thanks!
