Dear all,

I hope some of you can help me with some advice regarding e-mail programs, specifically IceDove.

I am using trisquel 7, with IceDove 38.8.0 installed. Currently, I am having difficulties setting up a gmail IMAP account (I cannot get past the authentication window, an issue already discussed at:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1157498?page=2

Two solutions are suggested: one is to upgrade the mail client, and the second is to change gmail's settings to “allow less secure apps”, which is fine with me.

My questions for the forum are: should we be concerned that Trisquel's repo has IceDove 38.8.0, while Debian seems to be already in v. 52.2.1? [ https://packages.debian.org/sid/icedove ] Is there a safe way to install the latest version? If so, how could I proceed?

I think this topic is also relevant, specially as FSF is specifically endorsing IceDove as the go-to program for e-mail in their email sefldefense website ( https://emailselfdefense.fsf.org/en/index.html )

BTW, my GNU/Linux knowledge is very limited, so please bear with me :-)

Thank you!
