If I understood it correctly, they removed a good feature just to make
linux/kfreebsd driver suck like windows driver does? I don't understand why
though; wouldn't customers hate them for doing that?
When in doubt, man gpg. There are countless options, but for basic usage
you can simply write gpg file to encrypt it and gpg -o file -d file.gpg to
decrypt it.
Thing is that Steam is only *working* DRM out there. Anything else can be
cracked by a moderately skilled programmer with a debugger (Guess what is
the most popular use of OllyDbg?)
The sole purpose of Steam is DRM; nothing else. Quoting wikipedia:
Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and
communications platform
There already exists a free Steam replacement (free and no DRM). It is called
Desura.
Do you really believe that Steam would have even a small fraction of its
popularity if it werent for DRM? Why do you think Steam has big titles and
Desura doesnt?
Crowdfunding is not a problem; outreach is. To prove this point I am going to
compare two recent campaigns: Ubuntu Edge and 0 AD.
Ubuntu Edge managed to receive $5 million in merely *2 days* while 0 AD is
stuck at less than $20k after more than 20 days. What went wrong? You may
think that
CPUs also have some microcode burned into them.
I assure you that Trisquel does not use non-free drivers. I managed to
reproduce all possible problems which could arise from lack of firmware on a
single computer in my school: no ethernet, no wireless, black screen after
GRUB (640x480 if I pass nomodeset to linux). Got to love h-node, eh?
If downloading videos is prohibited, then we all broke that rule. What flash
players like gnash and adobe do is cache the video on your hard drive and
then stream it from there. Video is 'hidden' somewhere in tmp files, but
finding a symlink in /proc//fd is trivial.
Expert mode is by no means default. In any case, I think the message should
be a bit stronger in opposing nonfree software. Looks like a perfect
opportunity to explain why one should not use nonfree sofware though;
opportunity which shouldn't be wasted.
Quick search shows that the page has 10 occurences of word free and only 1
occurence of phrase open source.
Debian GNU/Linux is labeled as free software operating system. However, I do
not care how they label it. Do you not use linux because it is labeled as
open-source instead of free? As long as open-source software is also free, I
will not reject it.
You cannot compare Debian with Ubuntu. Out-of-box debian, unlike Ubuntu, does
not contain any non-free parts. If the user types non-free to
/etc/sources.list, I bet he knows what is he doing. Only difference to
Trisquel (in that respect) is that Debian offers convenient way to install
Debian is not optionally free; the freedom comes by default without prompting
user.
Regardless of that, some people *need* nonfree software. Debian with nonfree
software is better than full nonfree operating system: one step towards right
direction. One can even track progress with vrms - haha.
That prompt does not exist in Debian; where did you get that from? In fact,
today I installed Debian jessie and I did not see it.
Debian is fully free (as long as you do not manually add non-free repository)
distro with the most developers, altho it is not endorsed by FSF.
Unless you really know what you are doing, do NOT use Parabola. But since #
of developers doesn't really matter (most of the Trisquel indirectly
You are a very paranoid fellow, aren't ya? Doesn't this world have enough
**obvious** problems to be bothered with conspiracies?
Fact is that freedombox project died, and kickstarter backers are angry
because of that. If it were conspiracy, it wouldn't have died. That guy truly
has wild imagination.
I never had any problems with nonfree firmware. Sure, it would be nice if we
had it, but it can't hurt anyway. Lets be
HAHAHA This made my day.
What BSD is doing is nothing but waste of time/effort. Nobody sane drops GCC
in favour of inferior compiler. Latest benchmarks[1] show that clang still
sucks. Same goes for other BSD replacements for GNU software: GDB is by far
best debugger out there and elftoolchain doesn't even have a
You are mistaken. Debian does not include any non-free software. Only way to
get non-free software (including firmware) with Debian is to write non-free
into sources.list (apt configuration file). If you do that, you are well
aware of the fact that non-free software is what you want.
Don't expect 100% transition to freedom in one shot; nobody ever managed to
did that. That is why I used to recommend Ubuntu, but now I recommend Debian
GNU/Linux due to some weird features in dash.
You should recommend her Debian. Or even better, install it yourself. If she
has hardware
Reverse engineering can mean two things:
- Debugging a program without symbols or source:
For example if someone creates a proprietary program for data compression and
you want to find algorithm which was used in the program, you can use objdump
(from binutils) to get disassembly[1] and if
TURN seems very troublesome...
We can try to test if this works:

I did a quick(read: proof of concept only, no server but manual port checking
with wireshark) implemenatation and suprisingly it worked on my
I will definitely start a project to do this. However, before announcing
anything, Michał Masłowski (mtjm) and myself are exploring alternative
approaches as well (Such as peer to peer with libnice/libjingle: Alot of
traffic on the server might not scale too well)
It would be easy to implement such a remote support server which would make
it impossible for server owner ( you ) to spy on traffic or gain remote
control over a client. Simply have both sides generate and exchange public
keys and then encrypt packets with them. I could write such a
To clarify, clients would use public key to encrypt and send back password
which would be used for traffic encryption.
I knew someone would ask. This is how I pictured it at that moment:
If server intercepts the encrypted password from one client and sends its own
instead of legitimate one you could simply implement manual verification.
Jim tells Bob: Ok bob I'm gonna give you remote support. Encrypted
Key randomness should not interfere with user-friendliness.
Client:
Send(PublicKey);
SupportGuy:
Receive(PublicKey);
NewKey = GenerateStrongRandomKey();
Send(EncryptWithPubKey(doughnut), EncryptWithPubKey(NewKey));
Client:
Receive(NewKey);
DecryptAndCheckPassword(NewKey);
From now on they
I miscalculated probability. My bad :(
It is 1/26 * 1/26 * 1/26 * 100 = 0.0057%
Aaah I don't know whats with my brain this morning... Anyway... I failed at
the part where New key is sent... Doughnut should be encrypted as a part of
new password to prevent operator from extracting it and sending its own
key...
Send(EncryptWithPubKey(doughnut + NewKey)); // + means
Well, I am fairly sure that protocol i proposed is secure because it relies
on the fact that public key cryptography works. Thing is that after both
sides „agree” on new randomly generated key you can tell the operator
that the key was doughnut but it won't matter anymore and session will
UltraVNC does require port forwarding.
HD5450 ATI PCIe graphics card
1) 0 A.D. and Xonotic are high quallity
2) Honestly, this would suck with free software only.
3) Blender can do wonders.
4) There are no limits: As long as you have gcc you can do anything. As a
programmer you can check out FSF high priority project list (
Or give him link to IRC webchat: problem solved.
Really, there are milions of chat solutions out there (web based or not).
Unless there is DRM you can install GNU/Linux on that TV and run a free
browser.
If there is DRM (which seems to be the case in this example which would
prevent you from doing this then it is evil by default.
This problem is purely technical; not ethical. Instead of discussing should
non-free flash player be used or not we should ask why is development of
gnash stagnating for over a year; and what can we do to fix it.
It will be long before flash disappears. In fact, flash animation is still
taught in schools.
For us, Trisquel users, all proprietary softwares are prohibited.
“Have To” Is a Relative Phrase
Really? In an hour I'll be at school. I have computer science class there and
I will use proprietary software. Teacher personally uses GNU/Linux and
recommends us to use it as well: and yet he
When will they finally learn that DRM won't stop copying (Or piracy, if you
prefer)? No matter what they do, as long as the video is played back on your
screen, you can get a copy.
I meant exactly what I said. Linux != GNU/Linux
Printers are never a problem if you buy from right company. HP Linux driver
is fully free. http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html
Now back on topic. Problem is not that you cannot find good free driver for

Are Blender and FreeCAD cool? Yup.
Can they import dwg? Nop.
Without complete dwg support they aren't usefull, especially to students
since every school in my country uses AutoCAD.
Big question is why do they buy laptop with Windows regardless of vendor if
they don't want Windows. I never understood that :/ Asus offers No-OS
laptops. As a bonus, its cheaper!
Its a Linux driver. Does it need GNU? Kind of. It is probably linked against
glibc/libstd++ (even though there is libclc, but nobody™ uses that)
