[Trisquel-users] Lost password on Trisquel machine!

2019-10-13 Thread mkl80

Hello to all. I came here because none of the other forums could helped me.
I am not using Trisquel anymore, although I consider the concept interesting,
but not practical, anyway...I have some photos in the disk, that I would like
to retrieve, particularly photos of my then pregnant wife. It is somewhat
important to us to get those unique photos that we store on that trisquel
computer.
The thing is I don't know any more, what was my password then... I have two
accounts on that machine, one mine, and the other of my wife. We (me and my
wife) could enter in my wife account, because we know the password of her
account, but the photos we need were stored in my account, because I am the
"linux" person in the house, she never cared much using linux and her
account.
I've seen some other forum, but that didn't help much because of one simple
reason, that irritates me a lot (sorrY):
When I click in the advance mode, the computer prompts right away to enter
username, and then password! That's exactly what I don't know! It didn't make
much sense... I am handed thigh in this situation!

With this set of informations could anyone help me? Please.
Thanks in advance and I will consider contribute more for real free software
like trisquel Linux.

2018-05-07 Thread mkl80
I understand their arguments: They are envy! Because no one is more pure than
them and their software whatever Os they are using!
I said in the past, and that's the main reason for me to leave Trisquel
community that that thing of free software is just a concept, an ideal... In
practical terms it's impossible to be totally free as it is impossible to be
totally Good or Bad: total Impossible!
We are interdependent and conjugated with so many things in life that we
could not say so, that we are free, that we are 100% goods and so on... It
takes being very much credulous to believe in it! This obsession with the
concept "free software" then degenerate very quickly to other fields, with
people assuming very sect-alike and fanaticism behaviour. I always maintain:
"free software" is just a concept, an ideal that doesn't meet the real world.
With that said and referring me to the topic: I am very content that FSF
endorsed this OS. Anyway I think they always have to broaden their concept of
"free software", and not be so picky on that,or they will not have a list any
more in the future... I will try pureOS in one of my machines, or more
sincerely I will buy another just to test this very interesting OS. This is

Excellent reply, but it did not convinced me.
→"According to the philosophy underlying modern Western legal systems, the
burden of proof is on the one who brings accusations."

  +
→ "I just would like to add that youtube-dl is free software. Like Firefox
is free software even if it does not block proprietary JavaScript, GNU/Linux
is free software even if it can run proprietary binaries, etc."

 ||

Let's simplify it, let's call everything in the repos of Trisquel
free-software and the job is done, simply as that!
That one of the proof is very funny. Your god RMS is all the time saying that
others OS's are dangerous because they run malicious software, where is the
prove in one specific case? Or he says it just because he wants to!
And that naive idea that free-software is free just because the community
have the freedom to investigate the code, doesn't stick any more. Where are
the programmers to do it if they are so scarce and probably using their time
to other things more profitable? Tell that to another...

In Math if you want to prove that a theorem is wrong, you just have to find
one proposition that negates it! Them that theorem becomes an Inconsistency,
that what is the idea of free-software.
But I believe in the future more inconsistency’s will arise against this
purism of free-software, this manichaeist idea of "we are right the others
are wrong", this so, but so much overrated concept...

Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless not working

2017-05-02 Thread mkl80
Honestly, honestly I was being cynical with him. And because he is a smart
guy he doesn't answer, so I had assumed that he perceived my cynicism.
But I have a point, of course, I am here in Trisquel for about 1 year, and
some things started to smell too funny for me.
Of course somebody is maybe (always "maybe"!) protecting the "business" of
think penguin and technoethical, maybe they have a part on it, maybe... But
one things are for sure:

1. The prices of them are just pornographic!
2. If there are real and concise knowledge on how to liberate the wi fi
cards, we wouldn't need to buy them.
3. Of course h-node is not the perfect solution. One simple question why we
have to register to access the "knowledge"? And overall is very cryptic.

The free-software thing, that so many like to divinize in this forum, is just
a concept! Nothing more! As we see with youtube-dl that supposed to be a
free-software, it runs apparently non free JavaScript! And that is just one
program, there are millions! Who's gonna check if the software is really free
or not, when there is no time nor means to do it? So is resoundingly only one
concept and nothing more than that. They claim so purely: this is
free-software operating system! But when comes the time to prove it, they
can't!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless not working

2017-04-29 Thread mkl80
I had talked about this problem in the forum more than once. But please
permit me to repeat:

The wireless thing is big factor for people to go away from Trisquel.
We are told always the solution: buy in think penguim a wireless card, but if
the prices are too high for our wallets, is there not any other solution? yes
there are, liberate and condensate the knowledge on how to get around that
big problem by other means:
1. A site or document with update wireless cards that do function on
Trisquel;
2. that site or document could contain the brands of computers and laptops
that function with no problem with Trisquel;
3.That site or document could contain also information on how to get around
the wireless problem by other means (code, installing a specific program in
order to avoid, get around or isolate that specific problem, or else).

If we continue to ignore this problem it is a big exit door for newbies and
people who being in Trisquel want to switch to a more modern laptop.

have said that before on at least two ocasions.
I am now switching for Debian for that reason, but still using trisquel on
the old computer.

"I have not time to argue, so I will only respond to comments that seems to
me that are honest, and that seems to me that are going to somewhere
meaningful."

It seems to me that we are entering in some sort of philosophical questions
that leads us nowhere.
What is wrong and what is right, freedom is also (for me) a concept so it is
better not lose time in this type of questions.

what I have to say is:
I always prefer free software over non-free software hardware, but if I have
no choice I will use non-free software even knowing that it is not a good
principle. Knowing that non-free software is bad for freedom is something,
even if I have to use it. I always give primacy to what is most convenient
for me.
From the day one, I always have refused, and identified in some persons here
in the forum, some sort of Sect type behavior, even in relation to RMS says
and thinks and writes. I want to stay clear that I don't always agree with
what RMS says, but I believe in some vision he has, and respect him and is
mission a lot. And I don't follow nor like sects!

Finally I want to thank to all the help and information that this forum has
given me. I am grateful to you all.

Hugs

which is what we all do. You rationalize to keep up with free software, I
rationalize or make excuses (that was funny) to get out. You are so pure,
keep it to yourself, you will be in the heaven of free software users.
Common! Do we need to go to that moralist conversation?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem with external wifi adapter D-Link

2017-04-25 Thread mkl80
->The free software movement fails when users embrace proprietary whenever it
brings a little practical convenience
Little practice convenience? My new laptop is smaller, lighter, more fast,
with more battery life, etc, etc. And I need to work/study now not tomorrow.
Which can be of more practical convenience?
we all know that in almost new laptops Trisquel fails to work one way or
another. In this one lenovo x220 laptop it was (at first) the wireless thing,
but then was also the bluetooth not working and (forgot to mention also) the
mouse pointer was very unstable, always shaking, etc. I had wait very time for
the two wireless adapters that at last doesn't work; wasting more time
waiting for another (with the risk of failling to) and resolving the new
problems? I don't think so... There are things with more priority than using
free software in my life.

->why would manufacturer ship free firmware if almost all users accept
proprietary firmware (and the malware it probably includes)?
I thing that is a lost battle! Even if there are some purists here in the
forum, I ask how many of us don't use smartphone, or have a google account,
see youtube, etc, etc. In general with the risk of using proprietary firmware
some way or another? Yesterday with is threat in the forum:

https://trisquel.info/en/forum/do-youtube-dlhtml5-video-everywhere-run-nonfree-js
we all came to know that even a free project like youtube-dl (that is part of
the Trisquel repos) possible uses non-free js! Have we so sure that other
projects in the free software repos don't use proprietary software? who is
checking if there are no time for it?
At the end is just conceptual, if somebody tell me 'hey use this, is free
software', I just accept, in principle! I can't do much: or I'll trust or not
trust. But I will never have time to confirm if it is or not, because we all
have limited time, limited personnel, limited resources, and limited
knowledge.
But this works for big company’s that use non free software too, even if
they have more personnel, more knowledge and more time; at the end they too
have a limit, and have to make choices. They can't spy us all, because if
they do it they would risk the bankruptcy or have to change their trade to
maybe espionage, or something; which maybe it is not more profitable than
what they do.

->two companies sell freedom-respecting devices and ship worldwide.
with not very ethical prices! A better solution was someone with knowledge,
concentrate the information on how to make a laptop, or a desktop, which are
the parts, that work entirely well with free-software; which are the laptops
that works with free-software; and let us assembly the machines. We have
limited money, and have priorities on to use that money.
I understand that that was not too good for those company's, but or we drop
the company's in favour of free software, free information, and a free OS or
we benefit those company's and lose people. Which is more important!

Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem with external wifi adapter D-Link

2017-04-24 Thread mkl80
Unfortunately I end up installing debian 8 non-free on the lenovo. After the
wifi-problem there was the bluetooth problem that was unnable to receive
files from my smartphone, and who knows what will come next... I am kind of
regretted because I know I am taking steps away from freedom of software but
I had no choice, I have to work, I have (like almost all of us) very little
time, I have to study too and have not unlimited time like I said. It had to
be that way! If disposal of free were more available, and the prices more
attractive, if I had more time or technical knowledge, maybe the choice was
another.
Seriously I begin to doubt if the free software project will ever be success
or it is doomed to be just another kind of technological fetish, if you know
what I mean...
Sorry guys but my new laptop end up with another distro due to all those
things mentioned.

[Trisquel-users] Problem with external wifi adapter D-Link

2017-04-23 Thread mkl80

Hello everybody, I hope you all are good.
I have this problem that I told in the title but let me contextualize it
first if you don't mind:
I have bought an lenono thinkpad x220, which I like a lot. I installed
Trisquel in it but I found that the wireless wouldn't work. Somebody has told
me that if I bought an external wifi adapter I could resolve my wifi problem
in the lenovo thinkpad x220 so I bought this one on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/272519323237?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Due to my responsabilities (job, family, music and things) I only find time
yesterday to try this item that I bought. But it doesn't automatically connect
to wifi, nor first of all can see it instantly in the system.
When I connect the pen I note some charge on the system, and the top command
shows this process:

→systemd-udevd
consuming almost 65% of the processor time.
When I do lsusb there is this entrance:
→Bus 002 Device 004: ID xxx D-Link System DWA-140 ...

I've done some research and find this page (which I don't know if it applies
here in Trisquel, because ubuntu is not free!):

https://askubuntu.com/questions/319280/problems-with-d-link-usb-wifi-adapter#319592
have done the command:
→ls /lib/firmware | grep carl
and it shows:
→carl9170-1.fw
when I try to do the next step:
→sudo apt-get install linux-firmware
It doesn't find nothing, maybe because it is not free nor part of the repos.
So I research again, this time on Trisquel forum and find this thread:
https://trisquel.info/en/forum/help-thinkpenguin-wireless-usb-adapter-n
And it is said to get the firmware frome.g. http://jxself.org/ath9k-htc/, but
the page is no more.

So this is my position right now: kind of stuck.
I know I have to get the ath9k-htc firmware... where did I find it and how I
install it? This will resolve my wireless problem? have you done this steps
too? And first of all this firmware is free???

If anyone of you could lend me a hand on this It would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance and have patient on me please. Thanks again!

[Trisquel-users] Paypal is totally out of my circle of confidence, ebay might come to be.

2017-03-24 Thread mkl80
First of all a big hello to this wonderful community, fighters for the
freedom and some justice in this vast cynical world: a big hug with love to
all.
Second, I am a little bit in rage mode, and third, English is not my mother
tong, so I might commit some errors expressing myself an this two last
factors may have some influence in it.
So let me say for me paypal=garbage. I am tired of the dishonest behaviour of
them, so I exclude them totally of my white list so for me paypal is totally
equal to sh*t. But enough talking, lets support my saying with some facts.
First, in the past when I had an account, when I had a problem with some item
that I bought on ebay the reffund was going directly to my account. Some time
after the refund would go to the paypal account, and no matter what I did, I
can't redeem it to my bank account. But ok I give them a pass on that... Them
some time after they ask to Withdraw money from my account in order to
certify my card, and said that they will give the money back if I give them
back some 4 digit code that appears on the transaction. I agree, and guess
what: they send me not a 4-digit code but a 3 digit (see atachment!). That
was the drop of water for me, they stole me 1.50€, and OK I closed my
account immediately. They never ask me why I was leaving or why I take that
decision, nothing! And I was with paypal doing purchases on ebay mostly by
almost 3 years. Great!
Then I started purchasing on ebay by using my debit card directly, no problem
so far until 3 days ago. I bought an hdd by the price 19.34 and in my bank
account was withdrawn 20.14. I call the bank and they said that PAYPAL has
withdrawn the 20.14€. Paypal again? I become to realyze that paypal always
has a part on the process of doing purchases on ebay, always, even if it is
with your direct debit card! So I send this message to ebay (I totally refuse
to talk with paypal!):

"I have this problem:
I bought an item recently in the value of 19.34€, but in my bank account I
was withdraw 20.14€.
I had call to the bank and the bank said that paypal has discounted that
value in my account and that I could make a police case if I want to.
1 I had bad experiences with paypal after, and I recently close my paypal
account for that matters, and starting paying the items I purchase with
my debit card directly. Now I come to realize that paypal still have a part
on the process of me buying on ebay! I am not pleased with that!
It's not by the value per se but buy the attitude: I'd like to have my
questions above clarified and I would like to have the money difference
(0.80€) in my account, please.

More: I will not talk to paypal, they want they call me.
Thank you very much, I will looking forward for an answer."

And I am waiting for an answer from their part. If they give me an
unsatisfactory response I will end up right away with ebay! I simply can not
deal with a person that is primary partner is a total dishonest guy, I
exclude both!

I am furious with them, and obviously it is not by the values 'per se' it is
the attitude. How can I trust making future purchases, if I don't have
confident on them, I will never know the value that they will withdraw from
me! Unacceptable!

What is your experience with paypal, and ebay for that matters?
where and how do you do your purchases?

(see atachments, this is not small talk, I prove what I say.)

Bye and best of the world for you.

[Trisquel-users] lenovo x200 thinkpad wireless external adapter

2017-03-11 Thread mkl80

Hello everybody, I hope you all are fine.
First of all, I know this topic has been discussed on the forum sometimes,
but as the topics are blocked (a thing that I don't understand very well...)
I resolve to initiate a new one here. So, sorry and thanks in advance for you
patience.
A couple of months ago I bought a lenovo thinkpad x200 to a friend. It was a
good deal I think because I managed to pay only 200€ for it. I was excited
and then I try to move from my old emachines e620 Gnu/Linux Trisquel laptop
to that recent one, but I failed. And failed why? There was no wireless
signal after the Trisquel installation on the Lenovo x200. I did some
research of this incredible forum and came to know that wireless it was not
possible in a x200 lenovo laptop. Somebody suggest to buy internal or
external wi-fi card/adapter on thinkpenguin store, but super honestly the
prices are too high in my opinion. So I heard that maybe an atheros wifi
internal card would fit, and I bought this on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Atheros-AR5BXB112-AR9380-450Mbps-Mini-PCI-E-Wifi-Card-for-Dell-Acer-Asus-/190722777110?hash=item2c67f6a016:g:rMUAAOSwk1JWfK~M
But guess what, no. This don't do the wireless thing on a lenovo x200!
I consider to forget Trisquel and move to Debian or Ubuntu, but as I am
stubborn (And like freedom and free software!), I will try and external wifi
adapter, and won't mind to carry it with me all the time.
My question is: I may buy an external adapter on ebay for cheep, but and then
if I have the same problem? I would very much count with your experience on
this, and ask for your help here, please. I would thank you a lot on this
one.

My goal is simply continue to use Trisquel, but on a lenovo thinkpad x200.

Hugs to all and have a good week.
cheers

[Trisquel-users] problem with abrowser - videos start playing by themselves!

2017-02-26 Thread mkl80

I have this problem that started a few days ago and I don't know why!
The thing is if I go to a site with videos, they start playing (the sound not
the image) all together at the same time. Not in youtube! In youtube if I
clic a video they start twice, I mean the image is one but the sound is as if
I had opened the same video in another page (twice the sound, one on top of
the other).

Please forgive my english, I hope you had understood.
Can you give me a hand here, many thanks in advance.
cheers

Free Software is about ethics and respect freedom of the user. Free Software
is more important than convenience or shiny.

But I think you miss one point: people were asking a lot by security updates.
And that is most important! Because, yes, window 7 is a lot older, but they
make security updates all the time!
I don't mind using trisquel ( I love it) but I have to think twice if the

 -> install other linux distro, with non-free software (mint, ubuntu-mate?);
 -> resell this laptop again.
I don't know yet, because I like this new machine (has an excellent battery
life!), and above all is Lightweight and easy to carry. On the other side,
and because I am a little of a penny pincher, I bought it for a good price,

This is so stupid. If you not call it Gnu/Linux you will burn in hell

All the rest say "Amen"???
I ask a question and somebody comes with a note: "it is not Linux is
Gnu/Linux!!!"

And that somebody doesn't answer the question being made!
It is Gnu/linux and not linux -> correct 100%.
But I want to call it just Linux (yes because of this silly discussion!). I
am not a preacher, I am not a missionary, I don't have to call the OS
Gnu/linux if I don't want to! If I in my conscience support the movement from
time to time (because I want). Nobody will tell me what to say. now that is
bee free, isn't it?
This sect-like reaction is purely and simply pathetic and I do not agree with
it nor I will ever agree.

Hello again. It's time for me to explain my episode.
But first of all I would like to make a side question: how do you put that
pink-forcode-frame in your statements? I would like to use it in the future,
in code related posts that I would do.

Explaining my situation:
I had installed mit-scheme from command line like so:
  -> sudo apt-get install mit-scheme
Everything all right, the program runs smoothly and all the rest... As I
wanted to learn how to function with this particular program, I downloaded a
pdf file of the manual (this one:
https://www.gnu.org/software/mit-scheme/documentation/mit-scheme-user.pdf).
But then and realize that I was using an older version of the program so most
of the examples didn't apply for the program version I downloaded from the
repositories ( version 9.1.1). So I dig in and downloaded the tar file of the
new most stable version: MIT/GNU Scheme 9.2.
I downloaded the tar file from here:
http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/mit-scheme/stable.pkg/9.2/. I untar it, moved to the
new folder, move again for the src/ folder, apply the Gnu/Linux Universal
sequence:

 ->./configure
 -> make
 -> make install
And voilà, an error as usual in the make step. I read the README.txt file
very carefully added the

 ->./Setup.sh
step that I was missing before the ./configure step, but again: error in the
make step.

Incredible!
I am missing something??? Why is this so cryptic to install some program from
source in Gnu/linux? Have I first to swallow a thousand-page manual to
succeed??? all that I want is the new version of the program! Everybody knows
that in the repositories they only have the older version!

Have patient with me... Many many thanks

p.s. I will give you the error message in-a-minute, sorry
p.s.1 The thing here -and hence my frustation/irritation of yesterday is that
from my experience, everytime I need to install from source a programe I only
suceed in 1/8 of the time. And I (think) always do the right steps: 1 ->
untar de file; 2-> move to the new directory; 3-> do the "./configure",
"make" and "sudo make install" sequence 4->read the README.txt file and apply
the required adjustments if needed

[Trisquel-users] how do you read your books: pdf or html?

Hi to all the people of this beautiful forum.
First of all Let me contextualize the question and be more specific:
I am talking about free books that one can found freely in the web. I n my
case more like Tech books but could be from others areas of literature.
A more specific question should be: what is better to use: reading one book
trough the browser (html) or reading the same using pdf file. What is less
computer resource consuming, energy saving, etc.

I hope you understand my question.

Many many thanks in advance.

But I read GNU and RMS FSF site and the other day he was here in Portugal,

I am with you on that one!

Re: [Trisquel-users] What other forums so you use and recommend?

2016-11-21 Thread mkl80

You have the point. I learned something from your explanation, thanks.

Re: [Trisquel-users] What other forums so you use and recommend?

2016-11-21 Thread mkl80
->Firstly, out of curiosity, is there any particular reason you find "Linux"
easier to say than "GNU/Linux"? It's obviously one syllable shorter (two if
you break the gn), but I find it interesting that you find it harder to say.

R.:I could start saying GNU/Linux, I admit is the real correct term. But
every time I used it they go like: "what/Linux!? I understood Linux, is that
Linux that you use?" and to simplify I say "yes, Linux". And we go from
there...Linux is better known, is a fact.

Now in relation to the debate above:
The question here was that the note was made like (At least I felt it that
way, I could be wrong): "You have made a sacrilege, you have to redeem
yourself".
And that's the kind of behaviour I had saw in other forums that I
intentionally left from. Is like some guys (I am talking of that other forum
that I left not from here!!!) have the truth and the new ones have to be
submissive, and that annoys me. It's a pattern that repeats itself and don't
have to. But maybe it's a trauma of mine...

Re: [Trisquel-users] What other forums so you use and recommend?

2016-11-21 Thread mkl80

Ok I'll frame my position in relation to programming and Sysadmin:
In the long run I would like (if I remain persistent like I am) to change my
job. I am not in tech area. I've learned C programming a 2 year ago and
indeed had good score on that course I'made. but apart from exercises and
some little programs that I do in C4droid in my smartphone I never really saw
when to use C in a consistent way. Well, then I knew in Gnu/linux one really
could apply C programming particularly in networking (another one of too many
areas that I like) and even by learning some other languages (python/scheme,
bashShell) I could became something and pretend - who knows - change my job.
That with my love to freedom, free software, knowledge, real democracy, etc,
etc. brings me to were I am know: in this beautiful forum, in the world of
GNU/linux.
I hope it's not too much that I want to move to a better job, after all, we
all want a better position in life, right?
About the links you gave: Now that's a good list! That's what I am asking
about! terrific!

Dude, if I go out there and an acquaintance of mine ask me about what is that

rather than Gnu/linux. If he some day want to install linux I suggest mint

the question baing made... well... I don't see the point of it!

But sure is Gnu/Linux not just linux. You have reason on that, my fault!

If I choose POP3 all the email will be in my disks! I assume that from time
to time I'll have to wipe out my folder because I have very limited storage
in my computer. How so you manage it? If you could give me an hint.

Many thanks in advance.

Of course I am! Reading it right now... Today I installed Gnupg in the
sequence of have installed and configure Icedove (not done yet some other
programs are needed and are not in the trisquel repositories, so I have to do
the installation manually, so I guess I'll have to postpone the Enigmail
installation). But yes, I am educating my self on this Gnupg and
private/public keys things, very important things!

many thanks for the precious links there!

Nice list there. It's allways good to know. But I think I'll use that of the
IceDove with email encription using gpg as sugested by onpon4. It's always
something better than my actual position. Many thanks and still is a good
link these one!
