Re: [Trisquel-users] Running script at startup not working
The manual page for cron says "When executing commands, any output is mailed to the owner of the crontab". This output will by default found in the ~/mbox file. That might come handy. While probably unrelated to this issue, when dealing with anything graphical and sometimes even without any apparent reason with silly programs you get output like "Error opening display!" which can be mitigated by setting the DISPLAY variable. (usually to :0)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Asus KFSN 4-DRE at the end of november 2016
Don't be too cheap with the power supply. Bad power makes for strange effects and could fry your other parts. As for what brand to select or avoid my knowledge is ancient. You'll need a heatsink and probably also a fan. Unless you're building something that creates very little heat. A CPU without a heatsink+fan might fry very fast or at least shutdown automatically as the heat gets too high. Note that different parts use different sockets so plan accordingly. :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] What other forums so you use and recommend?
M$ has obviously understood that free software is a force to contend with. "First they ignore you, then they fight you, then you win." (--attributed to Gandhi) And they've picked up their weapon of choice, FUD, like so often before. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear,_uncertainty_and_doubt#Microsoft So they indeed do get much better along with "Linux" and "open source" than GNU/Linux and free software and spread disinformation to keep the more potent stuff hidden away from the masses. This is why it is so important that we who know use the proper language and try to educate others.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing R from source
I think it's that home prefix that means the file is elsewhere. How to fix that smoothly I don't know. Maybe you can specify somewhere in rstudio that you used such a home prefix for R. Or a dirty and dangerous solution could be copying the file over. Note that this could lead to problems because now this file would never get updated for one thing... Does this help? https://support.rstudio.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/200661703-R-shared-library-usr-local-lib-R-lib-libR-so-not-found-UBUNTU-11-

Re: [Trisquel-users] Running out of space in partition 1
15 GB sounds like a decent amount. Have you deleted your APT cache? That's all the packages you've ever downloaded. You can do that withsudo apt-get cleanor somewhere in the Synaptic package manager too if you wish to do it graphically. Besides that you've probably collected a fair number of kernels, you only need one so you might want to uninstall the older ones, at 150 megs a pop. The logs probably don't take a huge amount of space but if they do and you have no use for them, feel free to zap them.

Re: [Trisquel-users] wi-fi crash and available space
The default install makes quite a small root partition. If you haven't done too much with your install yet, you might consider re-installing with either one partition or root+home with a large enough root. One partition is easier with regards to space management but on the other hand if you have a separate home it's easier to do re-installs or clean new version installs preserving the home partition...

Re: [Trisquel-users] Little problems with HDD and video
Regarding the first question you could put your Abrowser profile and cache into ram. That will make things faster and no more disk crunching, probably helps with battery life as well. There are various scripts floating around to do that (the issue is preserving changes as ram is volatile). Or you could do it manually. There is an existing tmpfs in /dev/shm.

The difference comes from using different units, GiB vs. GB. Regarding the terminal closing thing, switch to the terminal window and hit Ctrl+Z, that will suspend the process in it. Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel won't install on Lenovo ThinkCentre
Glad to hear that. Enjoy freedom!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Screen resolution changed after changing it in a program
Probably the easiest solution with games that exhibit this issue is to write launch scripts that contain the resolution reset command at the end. Detecting the docking station is a lot trickier. You can check dmesg and the connect it and recheck dmesg to see what it saw. Other parts of the solution might include udev or incron watching for specific changes in /sys, /proc or /dev. For example your docking station might come with extra usb ports and as a hacky solution you could use the usb port count as an indicator.

Strange. One more way is to remove the HDD and put it to another box and then install Trisquel onto it there before returning it to this troublesome box.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Unable to remove programs
Another thing you can easily and absolutely risk free do is clean the apt cache.sudo apt-get clean Of course, if you first make backups, then resizing the partitions is risk free as well.

Which of the free distros do you have experience with? I'll probably leave Trisquel as well but I'd rather move to a free distro than an optionally free distro. That would make it so much simpler to answer people who ask which distro I'm using. :) I think Parabola is where I'm going next.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Netinsall, tty, apt-get update not working
Are you aware of the grub differences? grub is "grub 1" i.e. version 1.97 config file /boot/grub/menu.lst grub2 is "grub pc or grub 2" i.e. version 1.99 config file /boot/grub/grub.cfg created by rules in /etc/default/grub. The latter file is what you're supposed to edit and then run update-grub because if you edit the .cfg directly, your changes will be overwritten when update-grub gets run next time (e.g. when there is a kernel update). You might want to remove the quiet and splash parameters to see what's going on.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Laptop too hot - CPU (almost) always at 100%
That command works if you're super user (i.e. after sudo su). If you want to use sudo with the command as one liner, you need to also use tee because currently only echo gets run as super user but the redirect which would need it doesn't get the sudo power. Why that's so I don't remember or understand.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Laptop too hot - CPU (almost) always at 100%
So this is a "suspend/hibernate/whatever" bug. The default kernel comes with a ton of drivers. Many of these will be as removable modules and not baked in. (And for many devices having a driver active means they will be powered on.) You could induce the 100% cpu condition and then lsmod to see what modules there are and then try removing (rmmod) those one by one to see if you can find the culprit that way. If you do, then add the offending module back (modprobe) and see if the condition persists or not. If not, then you could modify the "suspend/hibernate/whatever" scripts to do the module un/loading for you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Installation problem of Trisquel 7 on laptop ASUS X554LA

The first paragraph reminds me of the "UNABOMber manifesto" which I also found interesting.
